...to feel sad that MIL has wrapped presents in glitter paper?

Can't recycle it. She knows we try really hard to recycle. We are always finding recyclable plastic in her general waste bin. My DH and I will have to bite our tongues on Xmas day as we scrunch the glitter paper into the bin. I know my husband will want to say something but it will make MIL feel bad and make us look ungrateful. I can't stand glitter!

@Ubiquery

It's not even half nine on the day this thread was started. How have you people managed to fill 15 pages? Don't you know I have housework to do?
It frees up loads of time, if you're not busy critiquing the contents of other people's bins 😉
Benjispruce5 · 23/12/2021 09:43

Oh and btw I saw a recycling expert say that thin wrapping paper can’t always be recycled either. The test is if it crumples and keeps shape it can be, if it starts to release then it can’t. So it’s not just the glittery, foul stuff.

SoulOfIce · 23/12/2021 09:43

Yes YABU. Very much so. And going through peoples bins is weird.

Benjispruce5 · 23/12/2021 09:43

Foil not foul. Blush

JudgementalRaccoon · 23/12/2021 09:45

Just here to find a new username Xmas Smile

RedToothBrush · 23/12/2021 09:45

Say something.

Otherwise she will do it repeatedly.

user7473769969 · 23/12/2021 09:48

Agreed and wrong place to post, it looks like most don’t give a rats arse about recycling.

namechange30455 · 23/12/2021 09:49

Do you and MIL live in the same council area? If not, have you bothered checking that the plastic your DH is snooping through her bin for is actually taken by her recycling collections? They're really variable as to what they'll take.

BlokeHereInPeace · 23/12/2021 09:50

Why are you even celebrating Christmas if you feel this strongly about wasteful use of resources? 100% absolute hypocrisy.

LittleRoundRobin · 23/12/2021 09:50

Sad? WTAF? Confused

RealBecca · 23/12/2021 09:52

Yanbu. At all. Take it home with you and reuse it next year. Don't say anything to her but explain if she asks.

LittleRoundRobin · 23/12/2021 09:53

LOL. Grin SURE he does!

inappropriateraspberry · 23/12/2021 09:54

I'm surprised at everyone saying standard wrapping paper isn't recyclable. As long as it isn't shiny/foiled, or covered in glitter etc. it is paper and can be recycled.
The scrunch test is good. If you scrunch some up and it holds the scrunch, it can be recycled. If it pops back out then it can't.

Phrenologistsfinger · 23/12/2021 09:54

YANBU

babywalker2 · 23/12/2021 09:55

Well, why can't you recycle it? If it's still in decent condition then I would reuse it.

bruffin · 23/12/2021 09:55

This thread has made me sad
My very lovely DM was into crafting and always had a little bit of glitter on her face. It was a standing joke and when she died the undertaker put a little bit of glitter on her face and vicar made a joke about her sparkling in heavenSad

OP we havnt bought hardly any wrapping paper in years. I found some resusable bags down the market, big box for £4 which are normally £25 on QVC, this is their 4th year going for birthdays and christmas. No need to recycle paper at all!

Branleuse · 23/12/2021 09:56

My nana would have taken it off carefully, folded it and kept it in her camphor chest to reuse.

ballsdeep · 23/12/2021 09:57

@somehowsunshine

DH tends to look through the top of his mums bin when we're round, and usually pulls out 5 or 6 plastic items or cans that can be recycled. Mil can't be bothered which really pisses us off! He does it to make a point of how much she must throw into landfill instead of recycling.
Op get off your bloody high horse ffs Looking through people's recycling bins?????? Get a grip
janj2301 · 23/12/2021 09:58

In my borough you can't recycle ordinary wrapping paper

Gingerbreadrules · 23/12/2021 10:01

@GatoradeMeBitch

Normal wrapping paper can go into the recycling bin.

My council won't take it. Of course if someone uses brown paper or something, yes. But the regular shiny paper, my council says it's not recyclable.

"regular shiny paper" er no the vast majority of wrapping paper (all mine for example bought from Aldi) is matt brightly coloured printed paper which is completely recyclable. You just have to avoid stuff with gold/silver/glitter.

It doesn't have to be a choice between looking pretty and causing a ton of landfill versus using plain brown paper! Coloured paper can be recycled! Brown paper is very fashionable and virtue signalling but completely unnecessary.

Scrunch it up. If it stays scrunched it's recyclable. If it reopens it's not (because it has plastic).

Also we reuse paper and gift bags wherever possible.

JudgementalRaccoon

Just here to find a new username I just snorted here! Don't change the name it's epic!

Xtraincome · 23/12/2021 10:04

There was a thread about the best wtf threads- I feel this one is a nominee.

It's glitter paper, chill.

TR888 · 23/12/2021 10:04

I haven't read the full thread, but most wrapping paper is not recyclable. I believe only matt wrapping paper can be recycled.

MiamiBeach104 · 23/12/2021 10:05

I think you need to just get on with it. And you don't need to throw it to the bin, re-use it for some other occasion.

I support the cause but there's no point getting upset is somebody thinks differently and ruin the occasion.

Baggingarea · 23/12/2021 10:05

Yes it would be nice if she was as eco-friendly as you but you are being a bit ungrateful for the presents.

I'm choosing to believe the glitter paper is revenge for rifling through her bins Xmas Grin
