...to feel sad that MIL has wrapped presents in glitter paper?

Can't recycle it. She knows we try really hard to recycle. We are always finding recyclable plastic in her general waste bin. My DH and I will have to bite our tongues on Xmas day as we scrunch the glitter paper into the bin. I know my husband will want to say something but it will make MIL feel bad and make us look ungrateful. I can't stand glitter!

If this is real I am also Team MIL! Imagine getting bullied about your bins by your own son, awful. Why don't you try and have a nice family Christmas looking for the best in everything not looking for opportunities to criticise and carp.

@Thatsplentyjack

Not helpful.

No, just not what you wanted to hear.

Exactly. 🙊
AwkwardSquad · 23/12/2021 08:14

Judgemental raccoon… 😂

JohnSmithDrive · 23/12/2021 08:14

My mum's been recycling wrapping paper since the 1970s by unwrapping and carefully folding it to be reused.

You should be ashamed of yourself OP, if you're ripping it off and shoving it in a "recycling" bin.

Reuse her beautiful paper.

Tomlettegregg · 23/12/2021 08:15

Absolutely none of your business and no do not say anything. You will sound like an absolute martyr and if you were my DIL I'd tell you to shove off.

grapewine · 23/12/2021 08:16

@legalseagull

This can't be real can it? Your husband goes through his mums bin? Like some judgemental raccoon?! I'd throw someone out if they came round my house and went through my bins. Weirdos
Brilliant 😁
ieatpies · 23/12/2021 08:16

I'd be more concerned that I'll still be finding that glitter in my laundry, on my cheek in a management meeting mid-april, on the dog, in my dinner etc for the next 4 months

user1471462428 · 23/12/2021 08:17

I know someone like this. Constant criticism of other and virtue signalling about her zero waste lifestyle (she doesn’t need to recycle because she doesn’t produce any waste). But she fucking drives everywhere and I mean hundred of miles at weekend. These people completely get my tits

Mydogmylife · 23/12/2021 08:17

@somehowsunshine

DH tends to look through the top of his mums bin when we're round, and usually pulls out 5 or 6 plastic items or cans that can be recycled. Mil can't be bothered which really pisses us off! He does it to make a point of how much she must throw into landfill instead of recycling.
You husband sounds a sanctimonious arse tbf .
Cloudbaser · 23/12/2021 08:17

OP you should let her be. Your mil not recycling a few cartons/creating some paper isn't going to make a dot of difference. Sometimes I put a jar in the bin if the recycling is overflowing and I'm busy.

I know this industry - its not 100% perfect, far from it, so i don't stress if i'm not 100%. Its not unusual for whole bin lorries of recycling waste to get contaminated (say by landfill waste hidden at the bottom of recycling bins) and the whole truck rejected to go to landfill. Thats about 5-6 tonnes of waste - way more than you mil could ever make in a year.

MichelleScarn · 23/12/2021 08:20

@legalseagull s 'judgemental raccoon' is fabulous!! Grin

ImInStealthMode · 23/12/2021 08:22

Surely to be sanctimonious enough to be literally going through someone else's bins to judge then you must be absolutely confident in your own infallible environmental credentials.

Do you live completely off-grid in a hand-knitted shack in the woods OP?

Ps. Judgemental raccoon is my new favourite thing.

NerrSnerr · 23/12/2021 08:22

I assume all other areas of your life are completely environmentally friendly? Only using car when 100% essential? No flights? Only buying second hand clothes and toys? Etc etc.

Or is it just recycling you're obsessed with?

Momijin · 23/12/2021 08:23

Hi op. Reusing it is a good idea.

Also, individual change doesn't make much difference to the environment because there exist enough people and never will be enough people doing it unless there is systemic change.

Tiredalwaystired · 23/12/2021 08:23

Just take it off carefully and reuse it next year. And the year after. And the year after. It will become more environmentally friendly than the recycled then. Plus a new family tradition!

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 23/12/2021 08:27

Love, love, love judgmental raccoon!

It is impossible to live a zero waste lifestyle but we can all do our bit and put pressure on the govt to change legislation, tax polluters etc.

OP- the best thing you can do for the environment is become vegan.

Immaculatemisconception · 23/12/2021 08:29

Any excuse to have a go at MILs. Only on Mumsnet! 🙄

Cofifeefee · 23/12/2021 08:31

Christ, I know MILs get a hard time but this really is scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Maybe tell MIL that you're judgemental and ungrateful so that she won't bother with gifts next year.

BurbageBrook · 23/12/2021 08:31

God, how dramatic of you.

Our council waste doesn't take any wrapping paper at all even if the paper itself is recyclable as they know sellotape and glue etc will be mixed in with it. I live in a big city in England. We buy brown paper with prints on it which is absolutely recyclable but it all goes in the bin.
JuergenSchwarzwald · 23/12/2021 08:32

@somehowsunshine

It's so unnecessary though. Normal wrapping paper can go into the recycling bin.
Agree, but look at things in the scheme of things. Maybe she already had that paper - it's actually better to use up what you already have than buy something new. I also save paper to use next year if it hasn't got ripped in the opening process.
MojoDaysxx · 23/12/2021 08:33

MIL can do what she wants. We all have choices to make.

KaycePollard · 23/12/2021 08:33

Your children are more environmentally damaging to the environment than some glitter paper.

You might not like to read this, but it’s true.

You’re virtue signalling over some wrapping paper. How many cars do you drive? Are you vegan? What jobs do you do?

Most of us contribute to environmental damage in many more ways than not recycling a few pieces of paper. Most of us don’t inspect other people’s rubbish bins ….

God, if I was your MIL, I'd deliberately put loads of stuff that could be recycled into my normal bin when you came over just to make a point.
