He came in and was crying out alot and looked like he was heaving we raced him.to the vet and he was in alot of distress and was frothing at the mouth and died on the way.
Vet thinks heart attack but I can't help but think he was poisoned. We are so upset.

Poor you, poor cat! Sorry for your loss. It sounds very traumatic.

Could the cat have ingested some antifreeze? It’s sweet and pets will drink it.

TheCreamCaker · 22/12/2021 13:58

Oh, that's so sad. Poor boy. Sorry for your loss. It does sound like poisoning, but your vet is the best person to confirm.

Notjustanymum · 22/12/2021 14:00

So sorry OP, that’s awful for you. Has there been any grit put down near you? (it was icy here last night). I heard that the salt in grit can cause liver failure in pets, so my dog always has her paws washed if she’s walked in it, and is discouraged from licking anything near where it’s been put down, but cats roam, so he could have licked something like that…💐

Peas252 · 22/12/2021 14:05

I'd be going with the vets diagnosis, since they actually tried to treat your cat, rather than some random unqualified poster who has never seem your cat before.

What Peas said

AfterSchoolWorry · 22/12/2021 14:08

I'm sorry for your loss OP 💔

Starcaller · 22/12/2021 14:10

Oh gosh I'm sorry. I was going to suggest antifreeze too. It can often pool in puddles or beside where cars have been and it tastes sweet so is appealing to animals Sad

Bettybantz · 22/12/2021 14:11

Oh that’s devastating. I’m so sorry. If the vet thinks heart attack that’s probably it. How old was he? What a horrible shock for you Flowers

100problems · 22/12/2021 14:16

Unless you're prepared to pay for a PM id take the vet's professional diagnosis. Isn't it in some ways better to be a heart attack (quick/nothing that could be done/no intent to harm) than torment yourself that someone's evil enough to have targeted your pet?

DeclareThePenniesOnYourEyes · 22/12/2021 14:24

Sounds a lot like what happened to one of our boys, even down for the frothing at the mouth. He died if a heart attack.

Tevion28 · 22/12/2021 14:26

He was 13 i cant get over how he ended his life it was so distressing and not peaceful I can't get over it

Heart failure sounds quite likely, the froth could be fluid on his chest coming out of his mouth. Poisons often don't present like that e.g. antifreeze causes kidney failure so the cat would be unwell but not necessarily die suddenly.
Am so sorry, what a horrible shock. Cats often keep symptoms to themselves and the first you can realise they have a problem is when they are dying, as in this case. If there is any comfort to be had it's that at least you were at home and couldn't have acted any quicker, just awful to have to witness that I know. This was just a very, very short part of his life and hopefully in time you will remember all the affection and cuddles he enjoyed with you.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 22/12/2021 15:13

☹️

Suzanne999 · 22/12/2021 15:21

I’m so sorry, how horribly stressful for you.
To me it sounds like he ate or drank poison, as someone said possibly antifreeze.
I’m glad he made it home to you though. Far better than not knowing.

FlamingoQueen · 22/12/2021 15:30

I have no idea re poison, but had to say how sorry I am. Flowers

RocketPanda · 22/12/2021 15:33

If its any consolation his death was relatively quick and the way most vets hope for an animal to go, months of pain and treatment when they can't vocalise is hard.

ilovesooty · 22/12/2021 15:35

I'm so sorry - your cat was obviously well loved and this must have been so distressing.

catscatscurrantscurrants · 22/12/2021 15:36

I am so sorry for your loss

quietinhere · 22/12/2021 15:43

So sorry to read this. It is distressing and it cuts you to your heart doesn't it? It would have been a comfort to him being close to you when he ended his life, for sure, animals feel these things. My cat had been hit by a car and had paralysed back legs but managed to drag herself to the side of the road. Was found a day or so after going missing and I managed to get someone to drive me to the vets while she was in the back of the car with me. She had been very vocal, crying, but when she settled in the car with me she became silent. So it would have been a comfort to him for sure that he was with you x

EnigmaCat · 22/12/2021 15:51

How horrible for both of you, at least it was over quickly.
The vet will know best what happened, poisoning is usually a lot slower, heart failure less distressing, than a heart attack.
Sorry.

Tevion28 · 22/12/2021 21:55

Thanks for all the kind responses I am still really upset about this. It was very traumatic to see. My ds came home for Christmas from uni and for his 21st birthday only to see our cat die in front of us.

Chocolatewheatos · 22/12/2021 22:22

Tbh i think death from poisoning is different. Either it kills their liver or it eats them from the inside out and there's alot of blood. From the horrific stories of other people's pets.

It sounds like he was scared and in pain which is awful and must have been awful to watch. But I do think it sounds like a heart attack. There's nothing you could have done differently and he died with his family, trusting you to help him. And now he's not in pain or afraid any more.

tiredanddangerous · 22/12/2021 22:26

I'm so sorry for your loss Flowers

XelaM · 22/12/2021 22:34

What cat food was he on? Was he by any chance on any of the recalled dry food brands?

So sorry for your loss

msc6199 · 22/12/2021 22:47

I'm so sorry for your loss, OP. xxx
