I'm in my 40's and it has always confused me! Failing as an adult!! Any explanation gratefully received!

I’m not sure either op!!

ZenNudist · 21/12/2021 18:08

I don't know either

Northumberlandlass · 21/12/2021 18:09

Gammon is the raw cut, when it is cooked it is ham!

Sexnotgender · 21/12/2021 18:09

No idea.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 21/12/2021 18:09

Gammon needs cooking and ham is cured? I think?

CovidCorvid · 21/12/2021 18:09

I think gammon is raw and ham is cooked?

But then you get gammon and chips in a pub?

So dunno. 😂

JustUseTheDoorSanta · 21/12/2021 18:09

Gammon is raw. Ham is the same thing but cooked.

1FootInTheRave · 21/12/2021 18:10

So glad you asked this Grin

DeepaBeesKit · 21/12/2021 18:10

Gammon is raw. I've always thought it was a bit of a pointless term.

I just refer to it as ham (I.e in its cooked form).

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/12/2021 18:11

YANBU. I have been given different explanations over the years and I'm still not sure, because gammon and chips is definitely cooked.

Northumberlandlass · 21/12/2021 18:14

But that would be a gammon steak, which is just that in cooked form. It doesn’t change it’s name

I always say to the butcher, can I have a 2kg piece of gammon for a ham. Just in case!

BronwenFrideswide · 21/12/2021 18:14

According to a Butcher:

The answer is – not much! Both of these delicious and versatile cuts are taken from the pig’s hind legs. Gammon is meat that has been cured (by being salted, brined or smoked) and sold raw, whereas Ham is meat that has been dry-cured or cooked, and is sold ready to eat. In a nutshell; when you’ve cooked your Gammon, it becomes Ham.

EvilShmeevil · 21/12/2021 18:19

Anyone want to add how they cook their gammon (resulting in a ham!)?
Nothing too complicated.
Some recipes seem to suggest boiling first and then roasting.

TheFuckingDogs · 21/12/2021 18:22

I would go to either Nigella’s black treacle or Coca Cola ham recipes 😃

Doublevodka · 21/12/2021 18:35

I always do mine in a slow cooker. In fact it’s the only time I use my slow cooker now. Cooks perfectly, no messing about, and does not taste of slow cooker (like everything else that’s cooked in it.)

This.
EvilShmeevil · 21/12/2021 18:43

Thanks @TheFuckingDogs
I think I'll try the coca cola recipe

Yes.

It’s 20 minutes per 450g, plus 20 minutes.

Boil half the time.

Cut the skin off (leaving some fat) then cook in the oven for the second half of the time, covered in foil.

20 minutes or so before the end, take the foil off and chuck your glaze on (I use hoisin sauce!), and put it back in uncovered.

It won’t dry out this way. You really do need to boil first otherwise it’s just dry and salty.

JustUseTheDoorSanta · 21/12/2021 21:16

Slow cooker in orange juice with marmalade and sugar.
Or slow cooker in coca cola, onion and black peppercorns; then black treacle on it and in the oven to crust.

Crazykatie · 21/12/2021 21:40

Gammon is usually cooked, carved and served hot, Ham is cooked and served cold, eg :- Gammon, Egg and Chips v Ham Salad
That aside it’s the same thing.

ISeeTheLight · 21/12/2021 21:47

But then what's the difference between a gammon roast and a pork roast? They're both raw when you buy them? Are they just different cuts?

I'm not British and gammon is not a thing where I grew up. Totally baffled.

Gammon is cured

Pork for roast pork is just unadulterated pork

A gammon ham is ham that has been made from cured pork but hasn't otherwise had much done to it.

You can get other types of ham which are preformed/ moulded etc and they aren't gammon hams.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/12/2021 21:54

I've got that gammon and spinach song stuck in my head now. Hey ho said Anthony Rowley!

CoachBeard · 21/12/2021 21:59

I cook my Christmas gammon/ham in the slow cooker with half orange juice and half mulled wine and one of those sachets of dried spices to make home made mulled wine. Tastes wonderful.
