What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen in the gym

My husband was in the gym this morning and felt like he was being pranked.

There was a guy next to him literally dancing the Charleston in the gym between sets. When he had finished his session, he then stood in front of the mirror with his top off doing like wind up punches really fast and then tensing his muscles.

Is this normal behaviour or have you seen worse?! 🤣

Recently a new lady has started coming to my circuits class.
She does a full class wearing a knitted sweater.

I have no idea how!

Rrrob · 21/12/2021 16:47

Sauna inside women’s changing room. Most women were naked which was fine, but some people used to think it ok to then perform yoga. I can never unsee those things!!

@TellySavalashairbrush

Mine is quite sad, but a young girl who clearly has anorexia (I had had ED for most of my adult life, so can see the signs a mile off unfortunately) who is constantly on the phone, while running up the stair machine, or racing on the treadmill, telling her counsellor that she is not prepared to go and see her and that her parents are worrying unnecessarily about her weight

I long to speak to her and tell her to get help, but also know that I wouldn't have listened to a stranger telling me when I was at my lowest. Wish the staff would have a word though.

Had something similar in my old gym. A woman who was extremely thin, who was always on the cross trainer.

One time I was using the machine next to her and noticed that her machine said she’d burned 1,800 calories - she was still going when I left.

I did wonder whether to say something to the gym staff. I wonder whether they have some form of duty of care in that situation?

Ha, there used to be a bloke down my gym who would do the strut around naked thing. In fairness he was in good shape but it was just odd the unnecessary prolonged nakedness. You just knew he wanted people to marvel at his physique. If that was not bad enough he for some reason would use the hair dryer to dry himself rather then a towel and would stand there in the mirror in a power stance blasting himself with hot air. It was disconcerting watching his knob flap about in the air blast like the ears of a spaniel that is hanging its head out of the moving car window. Then he would moisturise, all over.

Fucking weirdo

Pahaha I always love your posts!
Shiningpath · 22/12/2021 10:31

A man in my gym who would only run backwards very fast.

latetothefisting · 23/12/2021 17:21

I too have seen a woman happily blow drying her voluminous pubic hair! who knew there were so many with a bouffant bush? I'd be scared of burns, personally...

Also:

  • A man in the steam room applying shower gel (actual showers were available)
  • My boss (actually 3 members of my management team - I ended up quitting that gym)
  • Someone who ignored the row of 20 empty treadmills to come and take the closest one to me (IN THE MIDDLE OF A PANDEMIC) - every other treadmill was roped off.
  • Several people in flesh tones leggings
  • An man wearing jeans for his workout

And this was in the pool rather than the gym but a man who undertook me by literally swimming UNDERNEATH me and then resurfacing again with his feet near my face. Very disturbing when I saw him bobbing along the bottom of the pool a foot or so below me (it's quite a deep pool).

littlepeas · 23/12/2021 17:23

Dh once saw a completely naked man drying himself with the hairdryer and looking at himself in the mirror!

littlepeas · 23/12/2021 17:24

Just seen that someone else has a hairdryer naked man! I wonder if it’s the same one?!

Scrabblecrabapple · 23/12/2021 17:33

Who are you writing an article for?

Jan 1st 2022 headline in some rag: “Shaving at the gym and a banana in the sano” …article will say something like ‘….A recent (made up) survey indicates the average person puts on 12 pounds over the crimbo period and many of us will be dusting off that gym pass on a mission to battle the extra weight. However a recent mumsnet poster has drawn our attention to weird things to look out for when battling the extra Christmas padding…..blah blah

MajorCarolDanvers · 23/12/2021 17:42

I'm always puzzled to watch people apply makeup BEFORE exercising.

Cheeseandlobster · 23/12/2021 17:43

Well I like this thread even if it is a lazy journo who started it

anotherneutralname · 23/12/2021 18:16

In the ancient days when I used to go to the gym, my favourite person was the man in his 70s who came in slacks, beige sweater and smart shirt. He would carefully change into tennis shoes beside the stationary bike, then pedal sedately for however long it took him to read a chapter of the massive political biography he always rested on the display. He gave not a shiny shite for all the posturing going on around him. Hero.

LGY1 · 23/12/2021 18:37

Maybe not strange, but it has stuck with me for years.
Waiting to drop baby off at Virgin crèche.
Woman had to collect older child for some reason (maybe about 8, in school holidays), she was dragging him down the corridor screaming “having you ruined my life!!!”

Obviously thought it was terrible, but some days I can sympathise….would never say that to my children though!!!

coconuthead · 23/12/2021 18:38

Girl setting up a tripod and filming herself doing two reps for insta 😂

ChocolateCakeYum · 23/12/2021 18:55

A woman on a treadmill eating bits of a candy bar she’d hidden all over her body (so a piece from the waist band of her shorts, another from her pocket, another hidden in her sweatband). Very strange.

A guy being told off by staff multiple times for overloading his weighs. He ended up being sick because he was straining so much. Did it stop him? No. He carried on.

Plenty of people blow drying their pubes.

The worst one though was a dude who got caught short on his was back from the pool to the loos. A poop fell out of his swim shorts. He kicked it into the drain with his feet. 🤢 He did shower afterwards but yeah that’s just rank.

gabsdot45 · 23/12/2021 19:10

I used to go to a gym which had a lot of older members who used to walk in the pool and then sit in a sauna. One day a lady got into the sauna with all her clothes on.
I actually mentioned it to reception on my way out because I thought maybe she had forgetten go get changed and had no dry clothes.

Probably was for instagram, but my PT often sets us challenges and films herself so we can see what the moves are meant to look like.

But that's probably very different to an instagram video.

KaycePollard · 23/12/2021 19:45

guy next to him literally dancing the Charleston in the gym between sets.

My trainer dances all the time - especially when I’m dying on the assault bike. But seriously, the Charleston might be a mobility thing, or a balance thing - a semi-pro boxer at my gym does amazing things jumping and balancing on one leg (I want to get him into my ballet class!).

One of my favourite cool down stretches is to lie on my back with my legs up against a wall and stretch my legs into a split straddle (box splits) using gravity. Some people might find this weird.

I find what people do at the gym amazing and inspiring. Don’t judge.

Immaculatemisconception · 23/12/2021 19:59

If ever I needed a reason to stay away from the gym, this thread is it. 🤮

I have also had someone insist on working out right next to me, when there are dozens of empty machines they could use. It's usually someone quite a bit younger and thinner than me, and the general conclusion amongst my gym pals was they are using me for "thinspiration", in other words, looking at me as an example of what they don't want to be, and making it their goal to go faster and longer than me. It was beyond annoying seeing those eyes dart over every few minutes, checking my stats.

The silver lining is I became absolutely determined to outlast every one of them, and I did. I would have died on that elliptical if I had to. Luckily it never came to that!

PatchworkElmer · 23/12/2021 20:07

Bloke working on his laptop… in the steam room 🤷🏻‍♀️

TinselTit · 23/12/2021 20:07

Haha I am not a journalist just love a good nosey! I go to a women’s group training gym so don’t ever see anything like this! The most extreme thing for me is my extremely red tomato head 🤣

ShirleyPhallus · 23/12/2021 20:17

@StrongSunglasses

A man laying on the floor with just his head bouncing on the vibration plate (turned on) until staff went over and stopped him. 😂
This really made me laugh Grin
Monolithique · 23/12/2021 20:23

I don't belong to a gym but was waiting outside one after taking the dcs swimming .there was a bloke who left the gym and did a short sharp 10m sprint up and down the corridor. It looked funny because it was indoors, and inspired 7yo dd1 to do a sprint of her own Grin.

Also not a gym but the local indoor pool. A woman came in with proper sea swimming flippers and a snorkel, proceeded to get into the fast lane and off she swam.

mnp321 · 23/12/2021 20:27

Discovering our hotel spa in Switzerland was "textile free" and swimming clothes banned. Being British, we thought this had to be optional until we saw a naked couple cavorting on a marble slab. I'm not a prude but this pushed our multi family group holiday to its limits.
