What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen in the gym

My husband was in the gym this morning and felt like he was being pranked.

There was a guy next to him literally dancing the Charleston in the gym between sets. When he had finished his session, he then stood in front of the mirror with his top off doing like wind up punches really fast and then tensing his muscles.

Is this normal behaviour or have you seen worse?! 🤣

I can't decide between the guy who was running on the treadmill wearing dress shoes, corduroy trousers and a turtleneck or the guy who would always turn up to spinning wearing a lycra unitard (complete with sponsors), gloves and those clip-on bike shoes. He would loudly grunt and stretch by the bike, looking like he was in the fucking Tour de France.

@Lockheart

Who are you writing an article for?
Who cares? It’s a freely available public site. Anything you write hear can be seen by anyone in the world.

It’s a perfectly valid conversation topic for Mumsnet.

Here!

Down my gym there is a huge cardio room with bikes, treadmills and ergos, always gets pretty busy post work. I was on one of the ergs on the front row when a woman strolled in, unfurled a yoga mat right at the front of the room and started to do some unconventional stretch exercises. She looked like some love island contestant with fake boobs, fluorescent teeth, perma tan and puffed lips. She was wearing those ultra tight 'skins' leggings which showed off everything and crop top that were flesh coloured so at first glance looked naked. She put on what can only be described as a floor show, certainly did not look like warming up for anything, just quite explicit bending over and spread leg poses. She did this for about 10 mins before picking up her mat and strolling off. Never saw her again.

EurghCobwebs · 21/12/2021 14:39

Seen it all.

A guy doing salsa/samba on the treadmill...including walking backwards whilst doing it.

Another guy who just paced up and down the mat area with his headphones on mime-singing into his phone like it was a microphone. He did this for about 15mins non-stop whilst I was trying to do boxing.

Then I've seen people come to the gym and working out in smart shoes instead of trainers.

  • Someone eating their McDonalds while on a stationary bike
  • There's an old man in my gym who does weights in normal clothes (shirt and a v-neck jumper) but I guess he doesn't lift much and never seems to sweat so maybe it makes sense.
Letsallscreamatthesistene · 21/12/2021 14:44

A woman who used to bring cushions from home, then use them as padding under the barbell on her shoulders whilst she did back squats. She also carried around a load of plastic bags, presumably for the cushions.

I’m a little puzzled by those surprised at seeing naked or near naked people in a single gender changing room. That is what changing rooms are for.

This is a British site. British people only get banned in public when we’re very drunk.
RunningInTheWind · 21/12/2021 15:02

I meant to say naked … but tbf, if I were to get naked in public I’d probably be banned.

lovemelongtime · 21/12/2021 15:05

another one drying their pubes with one leg up on a chair in front of the mirror - Put me off my lunch !

heather2908 · 21/12/2021 15:07

A woman who gets dressed in a really weird order. Bra, t-shirt, jumper, socks, knickers (then trousers, obviously). Just gives me the cringe every time.

I think there's nakedness and there's nakedness though. There's taking your clothes off to get changed or coming out of the shower with a towel round you and getting dry then dressed......and then there's wandering round the changing rooms starkers, liberally slathering yourself in moisturiser in front of the mirrors, drying your hair (head or otherwise), doing your make up etc, it just feels like exhibitionist nakedness......and then there's the worst of all.......bending over to get stuff out of the locker with no pants on!! Shock
Stellaris22 · 21/12/2021 15:17

Getting naked to get changed or drying off is fine, although bit odd when there's cubicles.

The lady who I see every morning stands in front of the mirror wearing just a thong when she's completely dry. Does all her make up and hair before getting dressed, it's very awkward.

DillonPanthersTexas · 21/12/2021 15:22

emmathedilemma

Ha, there used to be a bloke down my gym who would do the strut around naked thing. In fairness he was in good shape but it was just odd the unnecessary prolonged nakedness. You just knew he wanted people to marvel at his physique. If that was not bad enough he for some reason would use the hair dryer to dry himself rather then a towel and would stand there in the mirror in a power stance blasting himself with hot air. It was disconcerting watching his knob flap about in the air blast like the ears of a spaniel that is hanging its head out of the moving car window. Then he would moisturise, all over.

Fucking weirdo

emmathedilemma · 21/12/2021 15:24

thanks for the image @DillonPanthersTexas I'll never look at a spaniel on a windy day in the same way ever again.

AntennaReborn · 21/12/2021 15:39

I think most gym have a wanker shadow boxing in-between sets in the weights room

There used to be a few people in a gym I used to go to who made a point of using machines in unconventional ways. Not because they didn't know, but because they were too special to use them how they were designed (this was made clear by their loud explanations of how their method activated a particular muscle so much better 🙄)

In between that, people (men) taking equipment off me while I was using it, and people (men) giving me unsolicited spots and (shite) advice, I gave up on commercial gyms a few years ago

I train in a private gym now and it's marvelous!

SituationCritical · 21/12/2021 15:41

The rudest thing I've ever had was a man take my headphone out of my ear to ask me something totally trivial. He just went in and dug it out of my ear (wireless) Angry. Tit.

StrongSunglasses · 21/12/2021 15:51

A man laying on the floor with just his head bouncing on the vibration plate (turned on) until staff went over and stopped him. 😂

spanktastic · 21/12/2021 15:56

Years ago I used to work at a gym and there was a young female bodybuilder who used regularly shit herself whilst using the equipment, apparently it was because of all of the meat she would eat in between exercises, and she didn't care. People used to complain about her constantly but management didn't care either.

Marble2021 · 21/12/2021 15:58

I was on the treadmill once and there was a guy lifting weights near me. He started talking to himself and saying things like 'let's try small one this time'. There was only him and I in the gym so he was definitely talking to himself. So weird

TorySteller · 21/12/2021 16:05

I was in the weights section and a lad came in and started doing, erm, unorthodox movements with the dumbbells that definitely weren’t traditional lifting exercises.

He then put a dumbbell on the floor and kept hopping over it with one leg.

tinse1 · 21/12/2021 16:10

Well, there was a woman working out on the treadmill in a full burka and sunglasses.

I mean, just work out at home?

ChrissyPlummer · 21/12/2021 16:16

A woman who used to come in most nights I was there; wearing leggings, a coat and stilettos. Used to go on the stair climber for 10 minutes then leave.

TellySavalashairbrush · 21/12/2021 16:22

Mine is quite sad, but a young girl who clearly has anorexia (I had had ED for most of my adult life, so can see the signs a mile off unfortunately) who is constantly on the phone, while running up the stair machine, or racing on the treadmill, telling her counsellor that she is not prepared to go and see her and that her parents are worrying unnecessarily about her weight

I long to speak to her and tell her to get help, but also know that I wouldn't have listened to a stranger telling me when I was at my lowest. Wish the staff would have a word though.
