Neighbours bins next to living room window

StinkyTinks · 21/12/2021 11:39

We have newish neighbours moved in earlier this year, their driveway runs down the side of our house and at the back of their house. They have a back door but no ground floor windows on the back of the house. We have one small window on the ground floor from our living room, we have a large bay window at the front of the living room. Our neighbours have recently moved their bins to the other side of their driveway so they are right next to our living room window.
I’m not sure if I’m being unreasonable but this is really starting to annoy me. Our sofas our right next to this window so can hear every time they put something in the bin. I guess it’s only a small thing but just think they should have them next to their house and it is quite rude to move them next to our window.
Also we are not opening the window at the moment but sometimes do in the summer which we are obviously not going to want to do with their bins right there?
Would I be unreasonable to ask them to move them or am I being unreasonable to get upset by this?

You wouldn't be unreasonable to ask them if they could move the bins away from your window, most reasonable people would have no issue with that. They might not have even thought about it

RobertSmithsLipstick · 21/12/2021 11:45

You could put your own bin there; just a recycling one, so as to make the point politely.

Londonlivingg · 21/12/2021 11:46

If the smell starts to bother you then I would understand the issue, but the noise? What's that, 5 seconds of minor noise once a day or so.

Purple9121 · 21/12/2021 11:52

I would politely ask them to move them if it's bothering you and if they have a problem with it, start putting your rubbish in their bin!

It seems like from the OP that it's there driveway not a communal area so she couldn't do that (unless I've misread it?)

their*

CheddarGorgeous · 21/12/2021 11:57

We need a diagram!

MasterBeth · 21/12/2021 12:11

They haven’t been rude to move their bins - and if you talk to them as if they have, you’re not likely to get a great response.

But, as they’ve probably not given it a minute’s thought, a friendly and polite request will probably get them to move them. I know I would be horrified to think I was pissing off the neighbours for no reason.

HotelCaliforniaOnRepeat · 21/12/2021 12:12

I would ask them nicely. Wasps and flies will become a problem next year and you won't be able to open the window at all.

girlmom21 · 21/12/2021 12:27

Our neighbours bins are by our window and it doesn't cause any issues at all apart from when it's really windy.

Santahatesbraisedcabbage · 21/12/2021 12:41

Wave at them every time they clatter the bin!! They prob don't know it is distracting!

Claudethecat · 21/12/2021 12:44

Could we have a diagram please?

Dahliasrule · 21/12/2021 12:46

Have I got this right? Instead of putting on their side of the drive, next to their wall, they put it on your side under your window? If so really unreasonable,
A diagram would help clarify,

ThatsAllFolks · 21/12/2021 12:49

Sympathies. Mine do the same. Right next to my back door, miles away from theirs. I can't have my back door open at all except in winter due to the flies. No point me asking for it to be moved as neighbour is batshit.

worriedatthemoment · 21/12/2021 12:56

Maybe go and ask if they would consider moving them at least in warmer months

sbhydrogen · 21/12/2021 13:01

I'd just ask them, they probably haven't thought about it. The noise, the smell, the view...

stuntbubbles · 21/12/2021 13:10

Diagram!

This would drive me batty. But don’t go in all guns blazing – introduce yourself, be neighbourly, then mention it. They probably haven’t done it to troll you. Though it’s fairly weird to put your bin under someone’s window.

BornOnTwelfthNight · 21/12/2021 13:13

I’m struggling to picture the layout here. Does your window overlook their driveway?

Collaborate · 21/12/2021 13:39

I'm assuming OP's side lounge window opens out over next door's drive. In which case they are perfectly entitled to leave their bins there. If your window has been there less than 20 years it may have no right to open out over their driveway as that would be trespass.

A polite and friendly request may pay dividends though.

billy1966 · 21/12/2021 13:41

They must be a bit dim.

Who would stick their bins in front of someone's front windows🙄.

Definitely point it out and ask them to move them elsewhere.

PrincessNutella · 21/12/2021 13:43

That seems unbelievably rude to me.

Inertia · 21/12/2021 13:50

It’s worth talking to them , they might not have thought it through.

If they won’t budge, can you screen on your side with a fence or planting?

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 21/12/2021 13:55

This!! I can’t picture it.
CheeseCakeSunflowers · 21/12/2021 13:59

Ask them to move them. If the won't then when you have some rubbish to throw away open your window and pop it in their bin.

It's not OP's front window. It's her side window.
