Am I being grabby. I started a new job supporting young adults with additional needs at the start of November. The original company was taken over by a new company 1st December. Everybody in my new job recieved a 75pounds voucher from the new company... i was not included due to being new and apparently it was for the staff who worked through covid and wasn't fir new staff. To make it worse, I was told by staff members who were called down to get their voucher that the manager said there was not one for me. Aibu?

You are a bit unreasonable yes, it was a Xmas bonus essentially to thank all staff for their work through the year, you have been there less than 2 months so haven't contributed to 5/6ths of the years work. In addition they would have had to go through a budgetary approval process, sign off the total costs, order the vouchers and have them ready for distribution, this may have started when you were either not yet employed or had only been there a week or 2.

BabyofMine · 21/12/2021 09:06

I think it’s debatable whether you should get the voucher, but it’s VERY wrong that they should single you out and definitely, definitely should not be telling other members of staff.
Whilst it’s one incident so not exactly bullying, it’s headed that way and very mean.

Newmumatlast · 21/12/2021 09:15

I dont agree its headed towards bullying at all. Nor that you're singled out in any malicious way. You dont have one as you havent been there the same amount of time and did not work through covid. It isnt personal and is very black and white. Youd be a dick to suggest you should get what the people who worked through covid did for parity when you didnt.

lastqueenofscotland · 21/12/2021 09:17

Everywhere I’ve ever worked you needed 12 months to get a Christmas bonus, be that £150 or £150,000. This is essentially what that is.

Qwertykeys · 21/12/2021 09:18

It was a reward for working the whole year and during COVID , you did neater so why would you get the bonus .

MasterBeth · 21/12/2021 09:24

Get a grip! You haven’t earned this bonus because you haven’t been working there! It’s not bullying or special treatment - you haven’t been working there!

HopefulProcrastinator · 21/12/2021 09:27

Pretty standard practice to be fair, why should you get a reward for the time you didn't work there?

As for others being told, they probably asked pretty standard again and were told that no new staff would get the voucher - if you're the only new staff member it wouldn't be difficult to work out that you wouldn't have one.

Billyliarohdear · 21/12/2021 09:33

OP has and is working through Covid times.
If they see her as a valued member of staff they should give her the same as the others.
The voucher is from the new company which is even newer than OP!
Everyone who was employed when the company took over should have been treat the same.
Just wondering were there any shielding staff who weren't allowed at work who received the voucher? What would happen in such a situation?

Rainartist · 21/12/2021 09:34

You've only just started - yabu to expect one.

fourminutestosavetheworld · 21/12/2021 09:41

If they gave op the bonus it would be a kick in the teeth to those who have been doing the job under very difficult circumstances over the past year or longer.

It's standard practice to restrict bonuses to those staff who have been around for a certain amount of time.

DD started work in a bar last week. Tips are saved all year and shared. She won't be getting any and wouldn't expect any.

OkThenJustChill · 21/12/2021 09:48

You sound entitled. It's a hard YABU from me.

purpledagger · 21/12/2021 09:52

I think you are being unreasonable. The voucher was for anyone who worked during covid and you didn't.

The way I see these things is that your employer isn't obliged to give you anything, so it's a nice windfall if you get it, but if not, you are no worse off that you were before.

There are always winners and losers in these things and there will be other occasions when you are a winner.

SleepingStandingUp · 21/12/2021 09:56

Others shouldn't have been told, at most just told the policy.

You shouldn't get the reward for something you didn't do

LadyWithLapdog · 21/12/2021 10:00

IMO they could have stretched to giving you a voucher as well.

LonginesPrime · 21/12/2021 10:10

YWBU to expect a Christmas bonus when you've only just started.

However, they were VVU to manage the situation by telling other staff members that you're not getting one instead of being honest with you about it.

Tbh, the way they handled the communication of this situation would leave me wondering whether I'd made the right choice job-wise, as this was such a terrible and humiliating way for them to handle what should have been a simple one-minute conversation with you.

Cantbebotheredwithausername · 21/12/2021 10:12

Happy employees work harder and are more loyal to the company. Having a newly trained employee choose to look elsewhere for a job after a short time is expensive. In that perspective, making OP feel singled out and less than welcome to save a £75 voucher is stupid. They should've given you one.

BingBongToTheMoon · 21/12/2021 10:14

You had only been there a month when it was taken over.
No you don’t “deserve” the bonus.

RoastedParsnips · 21/12/2021 10:15

YABU. You've only just started. Hmm

Tired1234567890 · 21/12/2021 10:19

Yes you're grabby grabson

You've not been there for the time it was for.

AngelonTopoftheTree · 21/12/2021 10:19

Bonuses in our company are only paid to those who have been there for more than 6 months. I think YABU to expect it after less than 2 months work.

Looking for five new staff who leave because they don't feel valued would be difficult too.
LethargicActress · 21/12/2021 10:30

Yes, you’re being grabby. You haven’t worked there long enough to earn a bonus yet.

HemlockStarglimmer · 21/12/2021 11:05

Seems a bit mean you got nothing. I worked somewhere where the usual Christmas bonus was a week's wages. I started in November and still got £20 (at the time more than a day's pay).

Rosieparkerss · 21/12/2021 11:07

Seems petty and unnecessary for the sake of £75, will just create bad feeling- and it has.

BlusteryLake · 21/12/2021 11:18

It's perfectly standard that as a new joiner you don't qualify for the voucher, but it's not been handled well. All that is required is for your employer to communicate, once, the general qualification criteria and for this to be explained to you, personally and once, that you will therefore not get one.
Nothing else.
