Just wondering what the general consensus is. Since the numbers started going crazy, have you cancelled or scaled back plans or carried on exactly as you had planned?

YABU- haven’t cancelled a thing.
YANBU- have cancelled or scaled back some stuff.

Ugghhhh. It all feels very Christmas 2020.

Sending unmumsnetty hugs to anyone struggling. Flowers

Everything has been cancelled though not by me. Work party on Friday was cancelled. Dinner party at a friend’s house on Saturday was cancelled. Trip to the theatre tomorrow cancelled (whole show cancelled due to cast members testing positive). Due to go to family for Christmas Day, just hoping and praying that doesn’t end up cancelled.

AshLane · 20/12/2021 13:16

Yes. I'm ill and have waited for PCR results which haven't been returned. Sent another test today but it's too late now to plan Christmas.

DC's were coming here before Christmas and going on to friends. They couldn't because we couldn't risk them taking any illness, let alone COVID with them (new baby).
Still ill, too much risk to my vulnerable parents. Nothing bought. Christmas Day just not happening.

KittyBurrito · 20/12/2021 13:16

Yes, cancelled friends get together, dinner out and theatre trip. Will focus on what matters most, making sure we are negative so can see elderly parents who have been very lonely. It's really shit for the kids though. The anxiety is now obvious where we live, and they're picking up on the stress of it all. Good to see most people wearing their masks in the street today though, and the queues for boosters have been several hours long.

DrunkenKoala · 20/12/2021 13:18

Sort of.
DD and I had two events planned today (visiting FC and ice skating) but we’ve decided to skip it. We currently have covid in our house. We think DS has delta though (classic symptoms and his contact was about 5 days before his symptoms started) Although the rest of us can still go out and about (subject to daily negative LTFs) we’ve decided not to do anything for risk of us spreading it there or coming home with omicron.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 20/12/2021 13:18

Cancelled a meal in local restaurant.
Cancelled a meal with a group of friends.
Going ahead with adult children coming to us on Christmas Day.

Waiting to see re NYE but fully expect our usual gathering to be cancelled.

TenoringBehind · 20/12/2021 13:19

Haven’t cancelled anything but I had nothing to cancel. All my friends have been super cautious since the start of the pandemic and won’t do anything inside.

KirkstallAbbess · 20/12/2021 13:21

No but am out nearly every night as I've had extra opportunities due to others cancelling.

SameToo · 20/12/2021 13:22

My husband just tested positive so everything is cancelled. He’s self isolating so will not be able to join us for Xmas dinner unless we get Covid too. Such a shit year.

Solina · 20/12/2021 13:24

Haven't cancelled anything, my flight is today and I plan on being on it!

LondonWolf · 20/12/2021 13:24

Changed plans and saw family this weekend just gone in case of restrictions that might have prevented us from seeing them over Christmas. Another family get together cancelled also as one family member just diagnosed with Covid.

Shmithecat2 · 20/12/2021 13:24

No, but to be fair, I was always planning on a quiet Xmas at home, so nothing to change really.

MinnieMountain · 20/12/2021 13:25

Very reluctantly we’ve decided not to go to my dad’s for Christmas. It’s 7 hours on the train and he and his DP are vulnerable.

Georgyporky · 20/12/2021 13:27

No. I'll be having a "work meeting" in an hotel for 4 days.

FreedomFaith · 20/12/2021 13:28

Nope but don't do anything big for Christmas anyway.

ques · 20/12/2021 13:30

YANBU. We’ve cancelled some events, and most other things have been cancelled anyway, plus a few people we know are now testing positive or showing symptoms anyway…

I have Long Covid and so I know first hand how a so-called ‘mild’ (ha!) Covid infection can fuck your life rather more than just not seeing your friends and family for a couple of weeks at Christmas… ! Sad

Some people will be at greater risk of post viral illness if they get COVID, including iirc those with allergies, asthma, anxiety, autoimmune illness etc…

The viral replication rate means many thousands more people will be disabled by long Covid and unless you have bottomless savings, an amazing marriage, stoic kids who don’t mind you being asleep or can accept you being too ill to cook / drive them to Cubs, and are incredibly philosophical, see the bright side of having your health, social life, career and sex life get washed down the toilet - then by all means go for it!

bigbluebus · 20/12/2021 13:35

Cancelled going to a concert on 4th December as didn't want to spend 3 hours with 500 strangers in a hall with no ventilation and poor/no air conditioning. We'd had tickets for the original date in March 2020 which had rolled over a couple of times.

Also cancelled going to a wedding evening do this week. Still on the fence about going for a drink with 2 friends on Christmas eve as they are still going to the wedding (the main event).

We are cautious because DH works with ECV people although he finishes work for 2 weeks on Wednesday but then we have visiting 93 year old MIL to add into the equation (4 hour drive away so overnight stay).

DS has just told me he's been invited out for drinks after work on Christmas eve (8pm). I've said it's not a good idea as I think the pubs will be busy - unless Boris puts the brakes on things by then. (DS is due to come with us to visit his GM).

LakieLady · 20/12/2021 13:36

My Christmas has been cancelled. I was going to SIL's with MIL, but BIL has Covid and MIL is in hospital with either pleurisy or pneumonia.

This is only the 2nd Christmas since my DP died, so I'm feeling pretty low about it, but these things can't be helped.

FourTeaFallOut · 20/12/2021 13:39

No, the opposite. I'm crow-barring as much stuff in now that might be closed down in case of restrictions later.

AuntieStella · 20/12/2021 13:39

DMum lives in an area with rates that are half where we live. She's in her 90s and we have postponed the Christmas visit. I was quite flat and glum on the day we decided, but I think it's the right call.

Lavender24 · 20/12/2021 13:40

I don't have any plans because I'm antisocial but if I did I certainly wouldn't cancel them for this reason. No one I know in real life has cancelled any plans either, nor do they insist on guests doing tests. Mumsnet really is full of loons.

RhubarbFairy · 20/12/2021 13:42

We were supposed to fly to Austria tomorrow. We booked it in September 2020 with an air of 'surely we won't still be living like this next year'.

Cancelled it a couple of weeks ago when it was announced we'd have to do LFTs before coming home. Couldn't risk needing to quarantine there.

So it was a quick change of mindset and preparing for Christmas as normal.

ChateauxNeufDePoop · 20/12/2021 13:44

Yes - was going to extended family on Boxing Day which would have been 7-9 households depending on who attending so a few of us have now said we won't go so it can just be the host and their immediate family.

ItsSunnyOutside · 20/12/2021 13:45

We didn't have lots of plans to begin with so haven't had to cancel anything. We've already seen dhs family for an early Xmas lunch at the weekend, seeing my family boxing day which we are still doing.

ajandjjmum · 20/12/2021 13:47

We've minimised our plans - our big Christmas treat is DS being home from Australia for the first time in two years, and nothing else really matters. We haven't been doing an awful lot, as we need to be sure that our oldies are protected when they come over Christmas, but I literally just popped in to a friend's house yesterday for five minutes, and she's phoned and told me her DD (who I saw to say hello to) has just tested positive. Bloody covid is everywhere.

Hope we can all make the most of what we have.

littlepeas · 20/12/2021 13:48

@FourTeaFallOut

No, the opposite. I'm crow-barring as much stuff in now that might be closed down in case of restrictions later.
I said to dh last night that we should eat out every night that we can at the moment and just make the most of stuff being open.
