AIBU to get angry with someone on the checkout and end up in tears. I went with dd who is ten month to get 3 items. I use a trolley as i have a back problem and cannot carry her for very long. I didnt realize i put my items on a checkout that was hand basket only. The lady said she woud not serve me as would 'get it in the neck from her manager' I asked her to get her manager but she wouldnt. I was not rude to her, just stated i thought it was ridiculous (wasnt like i had my weekly shop) She was very rude, I ended up moving and blubbering sorry for long rant....

Bloody hell, she was well out of order. Poor you!

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 19/12/2007 20:35

Thanks I thought so to, I only used the trolley because i feel uneasy about using puschair as you feel like your stealing when putting items on top. so much for friendly service and festive cheer eh !!

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 19/12/2007 20:39

Which supermarket was it? I would ring them and ask to speak to the manager! 3 items and she had a go at you for using the basket only till? If they upset you then you must complain.

Unfitmother · 19/12/2007 20:43

You should complain

edam · 19/12/2007 20:45

What a bolshy, horrid woman that assistant is. Ridiculous. Do phone up the manager.

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 19/12/2007 20:46

Yes, I have just wrote a letter actually, but thought I woud see if any of you thought I was being unreasonable before I decided to post it.
cant believe it upset me all day. It was my 5th shop this morning I had gone to searching for baby milk, so as you can appreciate baby in and out of car for every stop. So was probably wound up by the time I got there, and it was just the icing on the cake.
It was Morrisons btw

The way to get round this with no arguments in future is to put a basket in the trolley and fit everything you're buying in the basket. Definitely complain to the store manager though or if you go online you can usually email complaints to the branch or the head office. Might be easier than a phone complaint while you're upset.

ChasingSquirrelsUpTheXmasTree · 19/12/2007 20:55

Well, I thought you were being unreasonable - but then re-read and saw you only had 3 items (had just assumed a trolley full and were using the 10mo and bad back as an excuse to get through quicker).
Now I think she was a total jobsworth and needs a good slap! (or rather, if she would seriously be in trouble for it then the supermarket needs a serious kicking).

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 19/12/2007 21:00

Good idea with the basket in the trolley.
I do know there are hand basket aisles at the end, but this was half way down. Thats why I didnt realize. I never mentioned my bad back at all. There was no one in the queue behind me so I wasn't holding anyone up, I just didnt see what the big deal was. I asked at least 4 times to fetch her manager but she refused. sorry will stop ranting on about it now.

just feels better to get it off your chest iykwim

I used to work on a checkout when I was younger, and anybody on a 'Basket only' till was always told to serve people with trollies, no matter how much they had, if all the other tills were busy, and I had nobody at mine. Some people are so ridiculous. You should have picked your three items up, kicked your trolly out the way, and dumped your items down in front of her, and said, "Happy? No trolly..see?!"Or even just thrown them at her....rude mare!

lazawreath · 19/12/2007 21:02

Excellent idea Beewise.

No1, make sure you post that letter.

no1putsbabyinthecorner · 19/12/2007 21:06

There were so many things i could have done and said
I will post it tomorrow.

edam · 20/12/2007 08:52

OOH, do stress that she refused, repeatedly, to fetch her manager. That's appalling.

candypandy · 20/12/2007 08:55

no you are not at all absolutely not
write a formal letter of complaint and you could get some vouchers as compensation. I think you probably will actually.

candypandy · 20/12/2007 08:56

gosh have to post again because you are so absolutely in the right and she should be ashamed of herself
post the letter.. don't let it go

SquonkaClaus · 20/12/2007 08:58

I've done this hundreds of times for the exact reasons that you did.

She was totally out of order and I would write and complain.

What did she do when you burst into tears? she sounds like a right jobsworth!

SSStollenzeit · 20/12/2007 09:02

I so hate going shopping. Things like this happen all the time and it's so unnecessary, isn't it?

What skin would it have been off her nose to have served you? She could have just said "listen, we're not actually allowed to serve anyone with a trolley at this check-out and they're quite strict about it, so could you keep it mind for next time?" That wouldn't have upset you or got her all worked up. Geez some people are two steps away from grazing-the-ground-with-their-knuckles-gorillas.

Can we not have titles for the threads though?

candypandy · 20/12/2007 09:04

better still send a copy to head office and tell manager of local store that's what you've done

InnAFull · 20/12/2007 09:06

I totally understand why that upset you. I always use a trolley too but got so fed up with the dirty looks that if I have under ten items and want to use the quick checkout I remove the items from the trolley and throw them INto a basket at the last moment, which is daft anyway and not so good if you have a back problem. Thogh some Tescos now have an under-10 items checkout that doesn't specify a basket so I guess they are becoming aware of the small-shop-but-still-uses-trolley brigade.

SquonkaClaus · 20/12/2007 09:06

what would she have done if you had put your dd in the seat of the trolley, then put a basket in the trolley and filled up the basket with shopping?

Would she still have not let you through?

What do they do if someone decides that as they only want one or two things they don't get a basket at all? Do they not serve them?

Twunts, the lot of them.

soopermum1 · 20/12/2007 09:09

i did what the others have suggested a few weeks ago, had a trolley but the line said baskets only. grabbed a basket, filled it (to the brim mind you) and popped it on the conveyer belt. wasn't like i was holding up others it is usually a trolley line and was empty.

what a total jobswroth that woman was, can't believe she refused to call manager

IsawKIMIkissingsantaclaus · 20/12/2007 09:16

I hope you post the letter, this is really bad,
I don't know why some people work in shops (other then they can't do anything else) when they are so rude and not people friendly in the least.

laura032004 · 20/12/2007 09:20

I'm the same - I quite often have a trolley, as I can't manage a basket and carry DS2 at the same time. If they kick up a fuss at the checkout (which has happened once or twice - I always make sure I'm under 10 items if I do this though), I will pointedly take my time unloading all of my shopping from the trolley and put it into a handbasket whilst standing at the till (there's usually a pile of baskets underneath the conveyor belt). Anyone with any common sense should see why you're using a trolley, and so long as you've only got a few things, no-one behind minds.

Jobsworth!

Thumbs up to Somerfield who have now got little baskets with long handles and wheels. Fab if you just want a couple of things, and are carrying a baby on the hip. Especially since two of my things are usually 4 pint bottles of milk which weigh a tonne!
