To make covid fudge

Decorbreadthegingerate · 19/12/2021 12:21

DD, 6, halfway through covid isolation and climbing the walls with boredom. We thought about making fudge today to gift to family members when isolation ends on Xmas eve. Would you eat the covid fudge?

I personally do not eat anything handmade by children.

When I cook with children I let them at it but do a ‘safe’ batch as well.

Chasingaftermidnight · 19/12/2021 12:44

Yep, I would. I wouldn’t if she had something that can actually be transmitted via food like norovirus but I doubt you’d be considering the idea if she had norovirus!

HeyGepetto · 19/12/2021 12:45

No I wouldn’t, even though logically the heat should kill the germs. Fudge is also no fun to make with a small child, pretty much the whole process involves a pan of boiling hot sugar.
I’m quite keen on homemade gifts generally though and wouldn’t bin them.
Make cupcakes or biscuits, much more fun! And you could save one for Santa.

AlmostAlwyn · 19/12/2021 12:46

Is this one of those "only on Mumsnet" things? I wouldn't, and don't know anyone who would throw away home made things just because they're home made!

But I'm a bit dubious about the enjoyment a child would get out of making fudge... Does it not involve boiling sugar? Then pouring it into a tray and waiting? Where is the fun part? Apart from just eating it Grin

Maybe salt dough would be a better idea? My kids enjoyed it recently and I used the microwave to dry them (15 second bursts for about 3 minutes) which was much quicker than the oven!

Exhausteddog · 19/12/2021 12:46

@Sparklepants53
I don’t understand why people throw away handmade food gifts! Would you not eat a meal in somebody else’s house then?
Do you use filthy utensils when you cook and cough and sneeze all over your food when you cook it? Why assume others do?

I have a friend who is super phobic about germs, well before covid. She came to my house for lunch but brought her own food, didn't sit at the table and at work would not drink out of someone else's mug (even if she washed it up herself) but is fine to eat in bars, hotels and restaurants etc when she has no idea of the kitchen habits. I find it a bit insulting tbh.
However it seems most of MN are the same!

chesirecat99 · 19/12/2021 12:47

No.

Rationally, I know there is no chance of catching COVID from it but the idea of a 6 year old coughing and sneezing all over it would put me off.

TBF, I'm not super keen on the idea of eating anything made by a 6YO unless I have seen them wash their hands and watched them make it.

WheelieBinPrincess · 19/12/2021 12:49

I’m not phobic about germs at all.

I have a baby so yet to encounter anything made by him.

However as a nanny I would not eat anything made by my charges! The youngest still walks about with his fingers in his bum.

How arrogantly wasteful to declare you throw away home made goods, what is so freaking precious about your digestive system that you would throw away food like that. This site never ceases to amaze me, what a twatty country we are.

WheelieBinPrincess · 19/12/2021 12:50

To be fair I don’t throw them away. The kids eat them or the birds do.

JustUseTheDoorSanta · 19/12/2021 12:53

Make a gingerbread house or sleigh instead; you can both enjoy it much more than fudge.

RedpepperRisotto · 19/12/2021 12:54

I wouldn't eat anything anyone's kid had made (except mine)

Bubblty · 19/12/2021 12:54

What are you supposed to do if you recieve home made food and doubt the hygiene of the person who made it? Tell them to do food safety course and give it back?
Exhausteddog · 19/12/2021 12:56

I'm not sure why people don't think children would be properly supervised when baking or making food? My kids were as germy as the rest when little, but I didn't just buy the ingredients and let them crack on with it!! Confused
I would supervise hand washing, washing utensils and wiping surfaces, I wouldn't let them cough, sneeze , stick fingers (or anything else) in anything we were making.

Bellsandsnow · 19/12/2021 12:58

🤣🤣🤣🤣

MindyStClaire · 19/12/2021 12:58

I wouldn't, and I'm not squeamish about homemade food or food made by kids. I know it's silly as I highly doubt you could catch covid through fudge but I just couldn't see past it.

I also hate food waste, but tbh in this scenario when you're presumably all going slightly insane, I'd make it and text the recipients in advance so they can thank DD and then quietly bin later if they want. Anything to fill the time!

actiongirl1978 · 19/12/2021 12:59

Ha ha! I made a covid Xmas cake in isolation last week. I promised my parents I hadnt coughed in the mixture Grin

Agreed.
NewbieAlert · 19/12/2021 13:01

It’s a no from me.

Derbee · 19/12/2021 13:06

I wouldn’t eat homemade fudge from a 6 year old, with or without Covid! Yuck

Frankii · 19/12/2021 13:07

Everyone has a right to eat what they want - it's not arrogant to choose not to eat something you're given. Grin

It IS pretty goddamn arrogant and controlling to unilaterally tell other people to act in the way you want them to. Yes even over small things like food.

Coffeeshopcookies · 19/12/2021 13:07

Hahahahah I would make it, freeze it, and then gift it to an enemy sometime down the line.

lottiegarbanzo · 19/12/2021 13:10

Fudge is cooked, very hot!

Just don't let the child handle the cooled fudge.

U8976532 · 19/12/2021 13:10

@Frankii I think it's pretty disgusting to gloat about throwing food away in a country where we have food banks and a world where people die of hunger. How completely ignorant someone must be to so lightheartedly dismiss food like that, I'm embarrassed for them. No one is going to die or even get sick from homemade fudge, biscuits, jam etc. It's pathetic to think otherwise.

AllKnowingGerbil · 19/12/2021 13:15

Sorry I wouldnt eat it. I've seen my 7yo bake Grin

Hope she is feeling ok

Winter2020 · 19/12/2021 13:16

Enjoy making the fudge but eat it yourselves.
