To make covid fudge

Decorbreadthegingerate · 19/12/2021 12:21

DD, 6, halfway through covid isolation and climbing the walls with boredom. We thought about making fudge today to gift to family members when isolation ends on Xmas eve. Would you eat the covid fudge?

Yes absolutely!

Sparklepants53 · 19/12/2021 12:33

I don’t understand why people throw away handmade food gifts! Would you not eat a meal in somebody else’s house then?
Do you use filthy utensils when you cook and cough and sneeze all over your food when you cook it? Why assume others do?

Confused

@Wavypurple

I think it’s a really nice and kind idea but personally I never eat and don’t know many people that do eat handmade gifted food, it ends up in the bin. Probably most cost effective to make something else that the two of you could eat together like cupcakes
I used to cook for a living. I had a café and catering business. A 5 star hygiene rating. People bought my products. I used to then pull out all the stops at Chriatmas and make loads of stuff to give away. Then I found out it got binned by some of my family as home made foodstuffs grossed them out. So I stopped giving them stuff.

They do, however order in 'afternoon teas' and such like from people advertising on facebook. And they visit cafés, bars and restaurants regularly. And go to parties with buffets and barbecues. Utterly bizarre.

CactusFlowers · 19/12/2021 12:34

@driftcompatible

No. But not only because of Covid but homemade food by children in general! I have children and I eat what they make but wouldn't subject anyone else to their grottyness! Nice idea though. What about making ornaments for family?
Yes, make and paint salt dough decorations instead?
itsgettingwierd · 19/12/2021 12:34

It wouldn't even cross my mind not to!

The temperatures fudge is heated to I doubt any germs would survive!

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 19/12/2021 12:35

No

UthredofBattenberg · 19/12/2021 12:35

No, sorry.

Can you make it for yourself and daughter rather than gifting it?

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 19/12/2021 12:35

Umm I ate my covidy sons cake… but maybe not off someone else

Baileyscheesecake · 19/12/2021 12:36
@Baileyscheesecake so maybe a sort of reverse best before date then Grin
Grin Yes @decorbreadthegingerate Don’t eat until . . . 😂

SenseSphere · 19/12/2021 12:36

I once caught hand foot and mouth disease from a cake baked by a 5 year old. So no.

Billyliarohdear · 19/12/2021 12:37

I'd rather not, thanks.

Incidentally we're also making fudge today.
We don't have Covid (that I know of- lfts earlier today).
It's the first time we've made fudge and tbh I'm shocked at all the stuff we need and the cost of the ingredients.

Ijustreallywantacat · 19/12/2021 12:37

I find the attitude of people who would throw it away very bizarre...I'd accept it, but given the obvious germ phobic response, maybe decorations would be better.

Funkyslippers · 19/12/2021 12:37

I'd definitely eat it. But then we made and delivered brownies during lockdown last year and got shamed for it on here even though the recipients loved them

gsaoej · 19/12/2021 12:38

I'd eat it yes. I've had covid recently anyway and don't think it would survive well in fudge.

girlmom21 · 19/12/2021 12:38

I would eat it but the salt dough decorations suggestion is a nice idea. Keep the fudge for yourself!

nordica · 19/12/2021 12:38

There is no evidence that covid spreads through food so it would be safe from that perspective.

However I also don't eat homemade food gifts in general unless I know the person well and have seen their kitchen hygiene standards.

Not if their sick 6 year old had prepared it, no. I would find a polite excuse not to eat.

I also don’t eat in the house of a friend who has poor hygiene standards generally, and has pet rats climbing on the surfaces in the kitchen.

But I will happily have lunch at my brothers house because I can see that he is hygienic.

(I am sure OP has excellent hygiene standards - not a comparison, just answering the question).

Frankii · 19/12/2021 12:40

God no!

But make it for yourselves. Salt dough decorations and paper chains are always fun Smile

Decorbreadthegingerate · 19/12/2021 12:42

@Billyliarohdear no no Google two ingredient microwave fudge!

OP posts:
Baileyscheesecake · 19/12/2021 12:42
@Baileyscheesecake no unfortunately she (not the rest of us…yet) has confirmed covid
Sorry to hear that. I hope she feels better soon and hope the rest of you don’t catch it. If it helps keep her occupied then still go ahead and make it but don’t be offended if recipients don’t eat it. Don’t give it to anyone who is vulnerable! Flowers

Bubblty · 19/12/2021 12:42

I'd isolate the fudge for 10 days before giving it to them and no touching or coughing on it

Bubblty · 19/12/2021 12:43

Or just make something you can eat yourselves

Returnoftheowl · 19/12/2021 12:43

Realistically I know I can't get covid from fudge... But it would still be a no from me. I'm not overly covid-cautious, but that would be over the line even for me.
A really cute idea tho... But maybe stick to food you can eat between you or paper decorations.

RobinPenguins · 19/12/2021 12:44

I would eat it. 6 year olds are old enough to wash their hands properly. What exactly do people think is going to happen to them if they ate a piece of fudge made by someone who has covid? Make it anyway as something to do!

bilbodog · 19/12/2021 12:44

Yes please - send some here please 😃

Is it any wonder kids dont learn to cook anymore these days when people refuse to eat home cooked food made by them? I am horrified when people throw away food their kids bring home from school.
