To have refused to clean it up?

I’m a cleaner. Got to work yesterday and other members of staff kept following me around - they ultimately recorded me going into the men’s toilets. On the floor was wet torn up toilet roll, toilet roll “balls” splattered on the walls, toilet roll slung all over the toilet and what appeared to be shit smeared all over the toilet and floor (turned out to be chocolate syrup). There was also an elf on the floor holding an empty toilet roll tube.

The other staff members were in hysterics recording my reaction. I didn’t see the funny side at all and walked out suggesting they clean up their mess so I could get on with my job. In my defence I didn’t feel that well to start with, hadn’t slept well and had slipped on the way into work and hurt my hip.

I was called a misery, reminded that it was Christmas and told to lighten up. They have now uploaded the video of my reaction to Facebook and it has been shared twice already and I’m worried it will end up going “viral”. I have asked them to remove it and will be going to management if they don’t.
Am I being unreasonable??

@INeedNewShoes

This is also def a case of knowing your audience

I don't know anyone who would find the prospect of cleaning shit off the walls funny.

This is appalling. Eventually, if any of these twats are decent people at all, they will look back and be mortified at their behaviour.

No. Or fake shit. That’s the problem with this ‘prank’ as well as being cruel and moronic and unfunny — that the OP has just been given unpleasant extra work by her colleagues, in exactly the same way as if they’d actually shat everywhere and thrown toilet paper all over. I mean, is she supposed to be grateful it’s not actually human shit, just chocolate syrup, when she has to mop it up either way?

Go to your manager and report it. Absolute arseholes!

I used to work in construction pre DC and there was 250 men used the site office toilets, it was grim!! Our site manager used to go in every morning once the men had left the complex & clean the toilets so that our lovely cleaner didn't have to, it's been 10 years since I worked there but I often think what a guy he was. He would never have condoned what happen to you & would have ripped a strip off those involved.

YouCantTourniquetTheTaint · 18/12/2021 15:24

Ugh what a bunch of fucking cunts.

Please if you can, get a copy of the video, or some screenshots it's been posted. The next time you are in work go to your manager, or HR, I don't know if you are an external company or employed directly. Please document everything.

Its just cruel IMHO, you have a set amount of time to do your normal tasks, you don't have time for this shit, not to mention that for a prank to be funny everyone needs to find it funny. This is just a power imbalance of I'm assuming "blokey, we're so so funny, characters" that are actually unfunny cunts people tolerate.

YANBU you are absolutely right in how you feel

CorpusCallosum · 18/12/2021 15:40

Absolute w@nkers. Report to management whether they take the video down or not! Its completely unacceptable behaviour.

FallonCarringtonWannabe · 18/12/2021 15:43

Nothing new to add at all except youre absolutely right to be furious.

greenpolkadot55 · 18/12/2021 15:43

What awful people..I agree that you should go straight to HR.
You weren't to know that the fake poo was choclate...It could have bee real poo.
What a bunch of childish arseholes they are

LakieLady · 18/12/2021 15:45

They are a bunch of utter arseholes and YANBU.

That would be gross misconduct where I work.

TeaAndBiscuitsAndWine · 18/12/2021 16:21

In addition to things already pointed out, such as the fact that this was bullying, there are data protection issues. Presumably you can be identified from the video, as it shows your face, making this video personal data. That personal data has been recorded on your work premises, presumably in violation of your work’s data protection policy for employees. It has then been made publicly available, on social media, again almost certainly in violation of workplace procedures and policies. I would expect those involved to be reprimanded by HR for misconduct / gross misconduct tbh.

billy1966 · 18/12/2021 16:40

OP,

I also thinks this reflects so poorly on the company.

Ispini · 18/12/2021 17:39

Utterly disgusting disrespect. I would have walked out, fair play to you for keeping your temper. They are utter twats, hope you are ok.

Spend the Christmas break trying to think of surreptitious things to get the basta**s back!

Boredof2020 · 18/12/2021 18:06

I'm a cleaner I would not find this funny, and neither would I have cleaned it. They have made a 10 minute job made it doubled or tripled. What they did was bloody nasty.
I am also doing the elf jokes at work to my management. The extent of my jokes have been decorating their desks with paper garlands and snowflakes. Made their desks like a golf course and wrapping up their chairs and work phones. I've been getting texts from them telling me it's hilarious. I would never do something that would make their jobs harder

shouldistop · 18/12/2021 18:09

They're a bunch of dicks. I'd go to HR now. Contact Facebook and see if you can get the video removed

NiceTwin · 18/12/2021 18:13

They sound moronic.
I too wouldn't have been amused.

2bazookas · 18/12/2021 18:16

That was not funny, not a joke, absolutely awful.

Go straight to management , report it, and demand the video it's taken down and that the offenders apologise.

Ledwood85 · 22/12/2021 18:14

Any update, @SickOfRoses?

I really hope you reported this, absolutely unacceptable behaviour.
