To have refused to clean it up?

I’m a cleaner. Got to work yesterday and other members of staff kept following me around - they ultimately recorded me going into the men’s toilets. On the floor was wet torn up toilet roll, toilet roll “balls” splattered on the walls, toilet roll slung all over the toilet and what appeared to be shit smeared all over the toilet and floor (turned out to be chocolate syrup). There was also an elf on the floor holding an empty toilet roll tube.

The other staff members were in hysterics recording my reaction. I didn’t see the funny side at all and walked out suggesting they clean up their mess so I could get on with my job. In my defence I didn’t feel that well to start with, hadn’t slept well and had slipped on the way into work and hurt my hip.

I was called a misery, reminded that it was Christmas and told to lighten up. They have now uploaded the video of my reaction to Facebook and it has been shared twice already and I’m worried it will end up going “viral”. I have asked them to remove it and will be going to management if they don’t.
Am I being unreasonable??

GrrrlPwr · 18/12/2021 12:02

I'd email the CEO, they should sort it out.

Cherryblossoms85 · 18/12/2021 12:05

Wow talk about punching down. Incredibly awful behaviour.

godmum56 · 18/12/2021 12:06

If they had had their laugh and then all turned to to clean it up, it still wouldn't have been funny but it would have been forgivable or at least ignorable but that is bullying, yes straight to management and don't forget to get evidence. If those had been my staff their feet would not have touched. Minimum of a public apology and written warnings all round.

Cindercat · 18/12/2021 12:07

WTAF. This is appalling, entitled, foul behaviour. Go straight to HR. You don't have to tolerate this

BraveGoldie · 18/12/2021 12:07

Oh my god - so they are not fellow cleaners? I thought you were all on the same team. That would still be a pathetic nasty joke, but I guess if they all do it to each other it's just crass and weird.

If they are not cleaners then this is just fucking awful bullying. They would 100% be fired at my company. OP I am so sorry. I hope they pay big time and 1000% right to leave it to them to clear up.

maddening · 18/12/2021 12:08

If they had let you discover the elf's naughty mess and then passed you a glass of prosecco and said, don't worry, we will be cleaning it up, then yes it may have come off as a funny-ish Xmas prank, but what they did was cruel and recording it was bad enough, but they went too far uploading to social media.

5keletor · 18/12/2021 12:12

OP, just as you said you're worried about it going viral - the Mirror have stolen your story and made an article out of it. 🙄 It's come up on my Facebook (they haven't got the actual video, just copied the post).

YANBU though, it sounds horrible and I would have felt awful for you if that had happened at my workplace, I wouldn't have found it at all funny. Glad you didn't clean it up, as others have said it needs reporting to HR.

RantyAunty · 18/12/2021 12:19

I like how the Mirror assumed women did this.

thetinsoldier · 18/12/2021 12:20

Yanbu at all. Doesn't matter what anyone else thinks - you weren't happy and it would have made more work for you. And posting the video online is unacceptable. I'd go to your manager.

Corbally · 18/12/2021 12:25

@SickOfRoses

Their excuse is that numerous members of staff have been pranked by “the elf” and I’m the only one that has had a problem with it. What they fail to realise is that everyone else don’t clean as their actual job. For me it was simply adding to my work.
Well, yes! The ‘prank’ wasn’t in fact a prank — you still had extra work because of it, regardless of whether it was deliberately placed chocolate syrup or shit!
Lalliella · 18/12/2021 12:32

YANBU, and the 1% that voted that you are as much arses as your colleagues. They are bullying twats. Definitely report them, and save the video as evidence.

Viviennemary · 18/12/2021 12:46

Report them for bullying. If nothing is done take out a grievance. Idiots. This absolutely would not be tolerated in any decdnt workplace.

valadon68 · 18/12/2021 12:47

OP, you are absolutely essential to the running of the company and office folk couldn't do their jobs without you. Cleaning is skilled, hard work and most of us couldn't hack it let alone without twats making it harder for you. I hope management take a very dim view of this and come out in full support of you. I doubt their colleagues will be impressed either. You are so NOT being unreasonable Flowers absolutely pursue this.

That’s absolutely shit, what arseholes. YADNBU. Sorry you had to deal with this, agree you should take to HR.

Wow they are a bunch of fucking cunts. I'd definitely go to HR/ management about that. What horrible people.

INeedNewShoes · 18/12/2021 12:58

This is also def a case of knowing your audience

I don't know anyone who would find the prospect of cleaning shit off the walls funny.

This is appalling. Eventually, if any of these twats are decent people at all, they will look back and be mortified at their behaviour.

GatoradeMeBitch · 18/12/2021 13:03

I hope she's gone silent because she's in a meeting with HR. It's also worrying a scummy tabloid picked up the story because they'll be searching for that video.

billy1966 · 18/12/2021 13:23

HR for sure.

They are disgraceful.

As for uploading it?

How dare they.

Back21970 · 18/12/2021 13:23

Feel quite angry reading this, so sorry for you OP, disgusting behaviour, I would have burst into tears if this happened to me. I can’t believe anyone would think this is acceptable behaviour in a workplace. I hope there are repercussions for those involved x

CockSpadget · 18/12/2021 13:45

That's the kind of shit that normally gets (wrongly) pulled on young apprentices. It's out of order, and you have every right to be upset/angry. Definitely report it, it's bullying, and they need disciplining, otherwise they will do it again.

Longingforatikihut · 18/12/2021 13:52

That behaviour is vile. Why should you be forced to do more work on behalf of their childish prank. And to film it is harassment. I'd be off to HR like a shot.

Our cleaners are part of our team. They deserve respect. I'm so sorry they've treated you this way. I hope you feel able to go full force in giving them comeuppance (through the proper channels)

Girasole02 · 18/12/2021 13:59

They tried to make themselves look big by making you look small. Take it to the top and have the last laugh. You owe them nothing.

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/12/2021 14:00

@ThirdElephant

YANBU. I'd pre-empt it and show the management tbh- it's presumably misconduct on their part.
Definitely do this.
