The tree is 7 foot and really wide. Our living room can't take it. It's not even a nice shape. It's overpowering and feels like we have a forest in there. I'm actually quite embarrassed of it too, and I was looking forward to having people round for drinks, but not with this monstrosity.

We didn't really have a proper Xmas last year and I bought lots of nice decorations this year to make an effort even though I'm not really into Xmas. It looks bloody awful and even the kids don't seem that chuffed. We got a real one as they wanted one. First and last time.

Would I be unreasonable to take the decorations off the tree and saw it down a bit? Can I cut the back so it stands more against the wall, or move it to the conservatory. Or should I just suck it up??

So, would i be unreasonable to tackle the tree (advice on how to gladly received) or leave it?

It's fabulous. I love it. It's not too big at all. I don't know why you think that, because it's so not.

Oblomov21 · 18/12/2021 08:13

"Really upset"? Hmm
Give your head a wobble!

ultra88 · 18/12/2021 08:20

@Bubblty

Embrace the chosen tree which grew and will slowly die. Respect it for what it is.
Absolutely this. My DP was in charge of the real tree this year. Being his stingy self he found one in our garden and this is the photo he sent me. He point blank refused to get rid of it and I had to agree that I didn't want to waste it. Not the showpiece I was hoping for Smile

Sounds fab OP. Embrace it (not literally) Xmas Grin.
When I was a kid we always had a real tree that touched the ceiling. We weren't well off and had a small living room, but it was joyous as a child. My dad is too old to tree wrestle these days. DH has taken over though, and he didn't even do Christmas until we got together.

DinosApple · 18/12/2021 08:27

Oh blimey OP I only read the first page before I commented the first time.

That tree is beautiful! Enjoy it!

GutsInMay · 18/12/2021 08:27

OP: your tree is fabulous!

I love a massive tree.

Ultra88 haha, yes that is very scratty Grin. HOWEVER , so is mine. After messing about looking at many trees I accidentally picked up the wrong one once it was in its net, and I have an equally lopsided happy tree.

Did you hear the Norwegian spokesperson for the much criticised allegedly scratty tree in Trafalgar Sq? Talking about it being a natural product from a forest? It’s fantastic that yours came from your garden! I am proud of my scratty tree, in solidarity with the Norwegian tree. #LetTreesBeTrees !

Smeds · 18/12/2021 08:29

OP that is a lovely tree. DH came home with his biggest tree yet this year. We like fat trees but this one is nearly 2 metres across at the base! We've had to move a desk and a 4-cube unit out of the room.

The main problem is trying to get under to water it!

Hemingwayscatz · 18/12/2021 08:29

Well, it’s only a week until Christmas so I’d just deal with it until Boxing Day then prompt remove it Wink.

They always look larger in the room than they do when you’re picking them.

FireworkParrot · 18/12/2021 08:30

@PenguinWings

I agree with the people saying keep it. Change the story to "that time Dad bought a crazy big tree-it was great- Mum was really angry but then she loved it". It's just more fun that way.
I completely agree with this. You need to step back from the situation, OP. The tree looks absolutely fine, it's grown and will die for the purpose of being in your living room. The DC and your DH were probably happy and excited and you ARE spoiling that by moaning. What does it matter? It'll be gone soon and hopefully you can all have a laugh about it.

Please stop trying to make everything perfect and just have fun with your family.

MalagaNights · 18/12/2021 08:34

You HAVE to keep it.

And you HAVE to watch National Lampoon's Family Christmas where they get a ridiculously enormous tree.

This will then be a family Christmas story: the year dad got the ridiculous enormous tree and we couldn't see the telly.

It's beautiful btw!!

SomethingBeginningWithX · 18/12/2021 08:35

It looks good!

Think yourself lucky. DH bought us a 10ft real tree. I had already put up and decorated the 7ft artificial tree. I had to move that into the hall (fully decorated), and buy more decorations and lights for the new one Confused needed 2 sets of lights as it's so massive!

Bubblty · 18/12/2021 08:35

@ultra88 I love your tree for all its treey realness.

OP your tree is also wonderful. Think of the years embedded in it's growth.

Bubblty · 18/12/2021 08:36

@GutsInMay #LetTreesBeTrees indeed!

Elnetthairnet · 18/12/2021 08:37

It looks amazing! There is a very funny Peppa Pig episode where Daddy Pig buys an enormous Christmas tree - this made me think of it Grin

Cloudbaser · 18/12/2021 08:37

OP that is just a normal tree - its lovely. I always get a big bushy tree - like a classic emoji tree. I would forget about the tree now and definately get the being embarrassed about it out of your mind.

ultra88 · 18/12/2021 08:41

That's what it ended up as. You can't look at it in daylight as you can really see how bad it is 😀😀

I love this , it's made me smile this morning amongst all the doom and gloom
Anyone else thinking Chevy Chase ? Lol

Beachgirl33 · 18/12/2021 08:45

Your tree looks fab. It really does. If you have been used to an artificial, real trees do take a bit of getting used to. How long have you had it. I find my initial reaction is that is too big but after a couple of days I get used to it. When it comes down in January the room looks super bare.

You never really know how wide/bushy they will be unless you see them out of the net so not sure how this can be DH’s fault. Real trees are not uniform and rarely narrow like artificial. They are a bit more work but I love the smell of a real tree in the house. Last years ours was v wide and bushy and a bit lopsided so I did give it a wee haircut Grin.

I don’t really get the embarrassment for friends to see it tbh. It looks fab. Ours is a nine footer this year and I’ve had to have a word with myself as the star is a bit wonky but I’m not getting a step ladder out every day to adjust! For us we always make sure we make a bit of room for our tree so take down plants and ornaments and stuff to give it a bit of room x

isthismylifenow · 18/12/2021 08:47

Oh I love that tree OP. Perhaps it is not what you expected but it's totally in the spirit of the season.

I've never had a real tree (we don't get them), so I was wondering what everyone does with their real tree after Christmas.

SamMil · 18/12/2021 08:49

fufulina · 18/12/2021 08:49

That’s my kind of tree! Our kids wouldn’t let us get anything other than a ridiculous massive tree. I think it’s brilliant.

I had a good giggle at this ultra. 😃

It does look a whole lot better now. 😂

AngelinaFibres · 18/12/2021 08:50

@Treez21

Can you trim the back quite flat, or is that ridiculous?
You can definitely do this. It can be greatly improved with a bit of thought. This is my childhood. My father always bought a tree that would have fitted in a stately home when we lived in a 4 bed 70s house SmileSmileSmile
user1471538283 · 18/12/2021 08:51

I feel for the tree. I've bought a small real one this year and I intend to keep it forever.

Please dont saw the bottom. One year my exs dad bought such a massive tree! It completely filled the lounge and took him and all his sons to get it in and out!

canichange · 18/12/2021 08:53

What???? That tree is epic! Please don't meddle with it, I love it!
