AIBU to ask where to get car insurance for 18 year old who passed test today?

I am with Esure, but they won't allow me to add DD to policy as my car is apparently too high powered. It is just a Skoda Yeti!

Does anyone know of any good insurance companies for Young drivers? When DD was learning to drive, we had Learner Driver Insurance through Marmalade. They offer Young Driver's insurance as well, but only if DD is not the main driver. As DD will probably be the main driver, I can't buy insurance from them.

I was just looking for alternatives.

Any advice appreciated.

Money saving expert has some good advice, I went on compare the market (or whatever it’s called) and chose from there

TheBestofTimesTheWorstofTimes · 17/12/2021 20:52

What is your "AIBU"? not sure people really understand the sectionGrin

ihatethecold · 17/12/2021 20:52

We’ve saved a fortune going with admiral multi car.
Started of with my DD’s car then added mine. Mine wasn’t due for another month but they could make my start date later.
Got my dd insurance down to £630 for a 1.2 Hyundai.

ihatethecold · 17/12/2021 20:53

DD’s Indios I’m her name so
She can build her own NC

ihatethecold · 17/12/2021 20:53

Insurance

Butterfly0909 · 17/12/2021 20:53

Thank you both! Will go off and look at Money Saving Expert and Admiral!

@ihatethecold I wouldn't recommend Admiral at all. They were awful when I had my accident. They are cheap for a reason.

We went with Tesco.

Galliano · 17/12/2021 20:57

You say ‘just’ a yeti but that’s a significantly higher insurance group than you would normally have for a teenager’s first car. The best way to reduce cost would be to get a car that’s cheaper to insure e.g. a Citigo would be in group 1 or 2.

Anniecott · 17/12/2021 21:11

My sons still a Learner driver but is insured with Stirling, at a good price, we looked at how much it would be if he had passed and they still came up the cheapest. This on a 16yr old Astra though.

I know what you mean. However, DD will only be at home until September, when she will go off to uni. I'm not sure I can justify buying a car for her for just 9 months. The other issue is she wants to drive herself to school. I bought the Yeti as the roads to school are very poor and a 4 wheel drive is a big help for this particular journey.

When DS passed and was in Sixth form we used Marmalade to insure him under his own name on my car. And again for the short periods he was back from Uni and needed to get about. Just a very normal hatchback though.

She's an adult? Can she sort this out herself?

gogohm · 18/12/2021 07:50

DD's is with my admiral multicar, was very reasonable but she's a little older

gogohm · 18/12/2021 07:52

Should say she has her own car at university

Chunkymenrock · 18/12/2021 07:53

Tesco black box policy my son is with.

unluckyinlife · 18/12/2021 10:05

I had either Hastings Direct or 1st Choice Comprehensive policy. They were the cheapest for a non black box policy.

guessmyusername · 18/12/2021 10:20

Direct Line black box for my dd when she got her first car

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 18/12/2021 10:43

Marmalade with a black box and my DD is the main driver with me down as a named driver.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 18/12/2021 10:48

@penniesdimesapplespears The OP says her DD is in school. So whilst 18 she is hardly an adult with a income to pay for car insurance.

abigailsnan · 18/12/2021 10:51

I came across Darwin Insurance quite by chance and found their quotes excellent for me and my DS in his 1.0 lir car well worth looking at imo.

bumblefeline · 18/12/2021 10:52

My dd is with Hastings Direct. Has a little black box fitted which she controls with an app. They were about the cheapest.

She's an adult? Can she sort this out herself?
Probably, but parents are allowed to help I think. Sometimes my Dad even helps me with things. At my age. Shock
Butterfly0909 · 18/12/2021 18:31

Aah. Thanks all. I was going to use Marmalade Pay as you go insurance until I realised if DD forgets phone, the car would not be insured. The black box is connected to an app on the phone. I was too frightened to trust she will always remember to take phone.

Tried Tesco but they wouldn't insure DD for my Yeti.
Eventually went with Admiral. The price is good compared to other insurers and she can drive straight away even before black box arrives. She has been driving round all day, such is her excitement about passing her test!

Many thanks to you all for all the suggestions.

I know it's a bit late but DS didn't have a black box with Marmalade.

Good to be sorted though, and freedom for your DD. Plus lifts to the pub for you.

@penniesdimesapplespears

Sadly she can't sort it out herself as she has no money. She is still doing A Levels. The fact that she can drive herself to school will help me as I can potentially get a job without bring limited by having to do the school run. I will use DH's car as he works from home.
