I keep hearing people talking about social credit, I hadn’t heard anything about it until a couple of weeks ago when in one week I have had 3 people telling me that this is what the government is trying to do. Any thoughts?

So go on then, what is it?

Kaylasmum49 · 16/12/2021 15:24

Well I was told that we would have a cashless society and that you would wear a wristband that monitors what you eat, how much exercise you do etc. it’s sounds so far fetched but these people seem completely convinced. Seemingly this happens in China

I wouldn't believe it op ,but the way this country is going it honestly would not surprise me if they tried to make this a thing.

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/12/2021 15:28
Hmm
VickyEadieofThigh · 16/12/2021 15:29

Sounds like bollocks to me.

DillonPanthersTexas · 16/12/2021 15:30

Any thoughts?

It's a shit idea and a gross assault on a liberal society. Such an initiative will suffer serious risk of mission creep resulting in further erosion of rights as the state will empower itself to deny you health treatment, voting rights, access to social services etc.

Peppercorn9 · 16/12/2021 15:32

It is being developed/trialled in the dystopian nightmare that is China, yes. Perhaps it's what some people (conspiracy theorists, for example) believe is the natural end point of introducing covid passes in the UK. It sounds like the people you've spoken to are of that persuasion, and they're probably bringing it up because of the rule that's just been approved by MPs.

Rainbowlaceshelp · 16/12/2021 15:32

They want us all in the pod eating bugs.

It sounds absurd but that is the direction of travel.

Shunpike · 16/12/2021 15:33

It's a black mirror episode.

Rainbowlaceshelp · 16/12/2021 15:34

Is it a conspiracy when we've been explicitly told that we will own nothing and be happy?

Told by whom exactly?
Rainbowlaceshelp · 16/12/2021 15:38

World Economic Forum

Peppercorn9 · 16/12/2021 15:41

Told by whom exactly?

By people who don't see the difference between protecting public health during a pandemic and forcing everyone to relinquish their belongings and live in mud huts.

Sorry, could you just link to the press release or speech where they've said that?

Yes, I'd be interested to see this too...

It does happen in China but that doesn't mean it will happen here. Just because a totalitarian regime decides to do something doesn't mean western democracies will automatically copy it, e.g. I can't remember the last time we had a "re-education" camp or act of genocide in my town, probably not in my lifetime.

Social credit is the system in China where each individual is monitored. It's like a credit score, someone who gets a good degree will gain points, someone who is unproductive, e.g. unemployed or disabled, will lose points. Volunteer for the government, score goes up, play a lot of videogames, score goes down. Your brother is a senior official in the Communist Party, that reflects well on you, your father rapes someone, that reflects badly on you.

The idea is your score can then be used to determine how trustworthy and valuable you are to society and reward or punish you accordingly. Just as with having a good regular credit score you get cheaper interest rates and better offers, people with a good social credit score will get perks like discounted train fares, priority for healthcare. The idea is the country helps those who help the country, and hinders those who don't.

But no, it's not coming to the western world any time soon.

MorningStarling · 16/12/2021 15:50

Old BBC article.

Chishnfips · 16/12/2021 15:52

Fuck. No.

VickyEadieofThigh · 16/12/2021 15:53

The govt can't even make most people wear a feckin' mask on the tube so I'm not convinced we'll see this being foisted on us any time soon.

I don't think it's far fetched at all

There was even a Panorama edition about it, I think?

Claudethecat · 16/12/2021 15:57

Yes this is definitely coming. My cat is mates with Larry, that is how I know.

Spectre8 · 16/12/2021 15:59

Well its happening in Europe isn't it. In some countries vaccinated can go to pubs, restaurants clubs and unvaccinated can't. In a way thats like social credit.

CovidPassQuestion · 16/12/2021 16:05

Wait, you're a cat who has a cat? Boggling!
LarryTheLurker · 16/12/2021 16:06

China's Social Credit System is pretty much as described. I can't see westerners putting up with anything like this but I've been wrong before.

The WEF quote is not a complete fabrication but has been misrepresented. It might be be the ideal world of some bonkers Danish politician, but private property rights are one of the foundation stones of our society and anybody who tries to remove them will face a civil war.

Rainbowlaceshelp · 16/12/2021 16:07

A cursory Google will show you. If you're not even aware of what the WEF have said I'm not going to waste my time spoon feeding you.
