Is this a reasonable price for a christening cake?

Asking because I genuinely have no idea about these things, I've never ordered a bespoke cake before.

I've been quoted £70 as a minimum price for an 8 inch one tiered cake that serves 25 people.

Does this sound about average?

Sounds about right. I paid £50 for a cake of the same size for my sons birthday in the summer and she's a home baker who I think probably doesn't charge enough.

Newduvet · 14/12/2021 16:50

I would say that is about right.

Chely · 14/12/2021 16:50

Sod that, I get ones from costco for under £20 and they're huge

CheesyFootballsAreEvil · 14/12/2021 16:53

Yeah sounds right

Baker90 · 14/12/2021 16:54

Sounds about right. Especially depending on your location and the decoration. My 8 inch and tall buttercream cakes start at that depending on decor.

ParkheadParadise · 14/12/2021 16:54

Yes, that sounds reasonable for an 8inch cake but will it really serve 25.

Sofiegiraffe · 14/12/2021 16:55

Shock are they any good?!

Yes sounds about right.

Agree with @Chely that Costco cakes are the answer to every celebration.

bettertimesarecomingnow · 14/12/2021 16:57

But pricey but depends on your location I guess.
I would charge £45 for that unless it's a really intricate design

Sofiegiraffe · 14/12/2021 16:58

Just shown my teen DD the Costco one and she said it looks "naff" Hmm
I think it's alright for £15! I might be swayed ....

Sounds about right.
I always get my cakes from m&so to order, not quite as delicious abd impressive as a bespoke one but very tasty.

gogohm · 14/12/2021 16:59

For a bespoke cake sounds about right. You can order from Waitrose made to order a bit cheaper

Chely · 14/12/2021 17:00

Costco cakes are delicious but not overly fancy decoration wise, you can always get little decorations to pop on top though.
You can pre-order to have wording put on them, need to have membership to shop there. We use them a lot so it's worth the membership fee.

Totalwasteofpaper · 14/12/2021 17:00

Depending on the number of people we get a selection.

We get the sheet cake as the main centrepiece
Then we get the Victoria sponge and the carrot cake on the side and freeze the leftovers.

Comes to £50 max and I get freezer cake for months

RealBecca · 14/12/2021 17:01

Less than £3 per serving seems good value.

Cost of ingredients, insurance, time, tax, experience, advertising, training amd food certs etc...they wont be making much.

countrygirl99 · 14/12/2021 17:01

Costco cakes are incredibly sweet and cloying. 2 mouthfuls and I feel sick.

SnarkyBag · 14/12/2021 17:02

Sounds about right for a bespoke cake. Costco would be cheap for a reason. That said I’m finding more and more that you’re paying for the decoration rather than the quality of taste with bespoke cakes. The last two I had have been fairly disappointing taste wise although looked stunning

shouldistop · 14/12/2021 17:04

Costco cakes are vile (imo)

Sofiegiraffe · 14/12/2021 17:07

Oh .... perhaps not then!

Agree definatley ask for a taster- lots of people now set themselves as cake makers but really you are paying for the decoration (tons of decorative icing which is expensive to do but does not actually taste very nice). The cake itself is a bit of an afterthought. If you know someone who makes really good cake, another option is to buy one and decorate it with a topper/flowers etc. Easy to do and people may actually eat it!

thatsallineed · 14/12/2021 17:10

I must be missing something here. The ingredients for a nice 8" sponge cake plus fondant icing would be not much more than a fiver.

I'd want gold leaf on it for £70.

MavisMonkey · 14/12/2021 17:15

Waitrose have this for £35 and message can be personalised

How long would it take to cook and decorate? You’re paying for more than just ingredients. It’s the skill and time.

This is why I don’t bake professionally. People have no idea how long it can take to make a celebration cake.

drpet49 · 14/12/2021 17:18

Costco cakes tastes like shit.

caketiger · 14/12/2021 17:20
