AIBU to think that all high quality kitchen equipment must be hand washed to last?

Drivingslowtosavefuel · 13/12/2021 22:19

Trying to invest in long lasting kitchen equipment (ideally 20 years + , or life!) but to my dismay everything I find that fits the bill must be handwashed and is not dishwasher proof.
Who has the time to cook AND wash up?!
AIBU to think I have to choose between cheap rubbish that can be put in the dishwasher and replaced every year or so, or long lasting pieces that must be handwashed? Surely this shouldn’t be rocket science?!
Grateful for any recommendations of items and brands which fit my criteria - especially knives and baking trays.

What equipment are you looking at? Are you sure it cant be put in the dishwasher? Give us some examples.

CSJobseeker · 13/12/2021 22:34

I've got procook and Lakeland pans which have lasted 10 years and counting being dishwashed.

We started replacing our cheaper baking stuff with Procook. Only a couple of years ago, but very pleased so far.

@bilbodog most of the stuff on the buymeonce website (recommended by mumsnetters) for example this knife uk.buymeonce.com/products/furi-pro-chefs-knife-23cm

@bilbodog or this baking tray uk.buymeonce.com/products/samuel-groves-mermaid-silver-anodised-aluminium-baking-tray
The baking tray specifically says not dishwasher proof, and the knife above says must be hand washed and dried immediately - so I imagine it would go rusty if left drying in a dishwasher

Knives go blunt in the dishwasher because of the constant water hitting the blade- you shouldn't wash them under a running tap either! Basically, just like good clothes don't like the washing machine, or the tumble dryer; good kitchen equipment needs good care too. Sorry!!

Drivingslowtosavefuel · 14/12/2021 05:21

@bilbodog also this pan that says don’t soak or place in dishwasher uk.buymeonce.com/products/recycled-cast-iron-frying-pan-28cm

Drivingslowtosavefuel · 14/12/2021 05:23

Wow you shouldn’t even wash knives under a running tap….mind blown and hopes dashed but thanks @Tanaqui

@CSJobseeker and @Lincslady53 thanks and great shout on the Procook baking trays - putting those straight on the Xmas list!

cast iron pans don't need washing full stop - you carefully build up the 'seasoning', then just wipe clean.

ShesComeUndone · 14/12/2021 05:52

Pyrex glass baking trays are amazing. The food cooks well and they come out of the dishwasher looking like new.

isthismylifenow · 14/12/2021 06:15

The dishwasher is a bit harsh for some things. You can't put Teflon coated items in, wooden handled things, knives. They will get ruined. If you are paying a lot of money for something that will last, then to me I automatically take better care of it and handwash. I don't put my le creuset in the dishwasher as I want them to last a long time. For the sake of taking 5 mins to handwash it, I think it's worth it for its longevity. The same with knives. They shouldn't go on the dishwasher anyway, both to keep the knife in good condition, and from a safety point of view.

If you paid a lot for a wool jumper, would you put that in the washing machine? Same analogy applies.

BigYellowHat · 14/12/2021 06:21

Our Le Crueset stuff is dishwasher safe.

ponkydonkey · 14/12/2021 06:28

Buy enamel roasting tins they last forever even in a dishwasher but you do have to soak them a bit depending on what you've cooked in them

My knives go in the dishwasher I just sharpen them

Le cruset can also go in the dishwasher

Also put tefal non stick frying pans in and I've had some of those10 + years

But I only use plastic or wooden spoons on them no metal!

CasperGutman · 14/12/2021 06:33

Enamelled baking trays go in the dishwasher fine.

FawnFrenchieMum · 14/12/2021 06:34

Ninja have a range of pans that are dishwasher safe but just checked their knifes and they are hand wash only too. This is the only thing in their entire range that isn’t dishwasher friendly so doubt you will get knifes that are.

Same. It's quick and easy to sharpen a knife.

bilbodog · 14/12/2021 11:00

Aah i see. I must admit i dont put good knives in the DW or cooking trays! Aluminium doesnt work in dishwashers either.

I have stainless steel pans - stellar, these are OK in the DW.

I wouldnt put cast iron in DW either but i do wash mine.

I think you just have to accept that some cooking things need to be hand washed. I find by the time i have loaded up the DW with cups, glasses, plates etc theres not much space for the cooking pans anyway!

isthismylifenow · 14/12/2021 11:03

@BigYellowHat

Our Le Crueset stuff is dishwasher safe.
They can go into the dishwasher yes. But if you have a look at the booklet that comes with the cast iron items, they recommend hand washing because the dishwasher can affect shine of the enamel over time. And the pans with a wooden handle should not go in at all.
isthismylifenow · 14/12/2021 11:05

I also don't put my nicer glasses in the dishwasher. It does tend to make them cloudy. The every day ones go in though.

Drivingslowtosavefuel · 15/12/2021 06:22

@ShaunaTheSheep doesn’t this limit what you can actually cook in a cast iron pan though to things like fried eggs? I can’t imagine not washing a pan after making something saucy like a fish stew, or a risotto?

OP posts:
Drivingslowtosavefuel · 15/12/2021 06:24

@isthismylifenow we only have “everyday” glasses for this reason - can’t be bothered with the effort of hand washing fancy glasses!

Drivingslowtosavefuel · 15/12/2021 06:26

@ShesComeUndone didn’t know Pyrex baking trays were a thing but will look out for those. I have lots of Pyrex dishes for saucy things like lasagnes, gratins and crumbles but no flat trays . Thanks

@isthismylifenow I have one lovely proper wool jumper and it rarely gets worn because I don’t want to put the washing machine on just for that on a different setting from everything else that gets bunged in all together!

I avoid wooden handled kitchen items because of the dishwasher issue - except wooden spoons, which I put through the dishwasher, knowing they won’t last and will need replacing (they still last years though so glad I don’t bother to hand wash these). Again non stick pans go in there, knowing they will slowly get ruined.

Honestly so much cooking from scratch and eating happens in our house we struggle to keep up with loading and unloading the dishwasher in time before it has to be re-loaded, and it often goes on 2x daily - neither myself nor DP want to be washing up on top of that!

As for knife safety in the dishwasher, what do you mean? We put ours on the top rack where they lie there neatly in their slots and don’t escape!

Thanks
