To think Mumsnet is no longer the bastion of free speech that it was

MumsTheWordFact · 13/12/2021 20:30

I've noticed a number of threads that I've been following have been deleted lately. The latest one was about a mother saying she had been 'cancelled' by her children.

I even had my own thread pulled down about a month or so ago with absolutely no reason given as to why.

Have Google or Facebook bought out Mumsnet and I just didn't hear about it?

OP posts:

@coogee

And does nothing to endear the English to the rest of the world who already think they are uptight snobs.

Because only English people post on MN.

I didn't say only English people post on MN It is however based in England with majority English users. Sooo many posts reek classism and snobbery, the two peculiarly English traits. Gosh, just take a look at the thread running at the moment about Americans daring to use English language differently to "pure" English. A thread of unmitigated hatred.
Theunamedcat · 14/12/2021 16:19

Because Americans are never classiest or snobby

DdraigGoch · 14/12/2021 16:25

@Ylvamoon

Free speach and voicing opinions is only allowed as long as the majority agrees with it.
Yet when 97% of posters on here take a side on a certain issue on here, it's the whining of the 3% which gets listened to and the thread moved to the naughty corner.
Meadowbreeze · 14/12/2021 16:34

I had a thread deleted recently because I said I don't like the way lots of extensions look Confused the reason given was that they felt the discussion wasn't going to ever go anywhere positive.

50ShadesOfCatholic · 14/12/2021 16:37

@JudgeJ
I did wonder if someone would be able to make such a nasty sweeping statement about other nationalities or would that be a naughty step crime?

Maybe have another read of what I wrote and reconsider your response?

I didn't make a sweeping judgement of a nationality. And I should clarify that I am English though I currently live in NZ. I have lived in several countries so I have fairly good insight of different perspectives such as how the English are viewed internationally. I have lived it.

I pointed out that the tone of many threads give the English a bad reputation. Trust me, MN is notorious for bitchiness and it is an English site. We cannot separate the two.

However, to address your point about other nationalities, I have noticed appalling levels of xenophobia go unchallenged here, there are multiple threads devoted to hatred directed at Americans, Australians, Germans and so on.

Even worse is the pure, unadulterated racism though I have noticed that most racist posts do get deleted fairly quickly. I do believe MN as a site recognises and condones racism but there are still an awful lot of users who appear to be breathtakingly ignorant, posting "funny things their children said about Black people", for example. It is heartening when other posters pick them up on it but oh, the number of micro aggressions towards certain groups is sad.

It feels to me that MN identifies some kinds hate speech but not others.

Hate is hate, whether it is directed at a person, a race, a country, a religion and as on. Personally I don't think it should be allowed at all. I don't understand why it is considered acceptable when directed at celebrities and politicians. (which is definitely not peculiar to MN!)

I just think there are better ways to talk.

Franca123 · 14/12/2021 16:38

Why on earth can't you dislike extensions? Wait! Hair extensions or house extensions?

AlfonsoTheUnrepentant · 14/12/2021 16:39

My guess is hair extensions.

DickMabutt73962 · 14/12/2021 16:41

@RaPumPumPumPum

YANBU.

I was banned for a week a few months ago for saying to a (very smug judgmental and self congratulatory) OP, who didn’t like that some people found parenting hard and express it, “Well done you OP come and get your medal”. I challenged the ban and was told it wasn’t in the spirit of the thread Confused which to me did not require a well long ban!

Oh god I give stars and medals all the time to superior posters 😳
Hankunamatata · 14/12/2021 16:42

@FitAt50

One persons Free Speech is another person Hate Speech.

@SoSoTiredToday

I've had posts and threads taken down before and also been banned for a bit! I genuinely can't understand it! I very rarely swear (some people swear like troopers on Mumsnet yet their posts remain!), my posts are always polite. But it seems sometimes either people think you r trolling (when you are not) and complain and Mumsnet takes away your post/thread, or the Mumsnet team just don't like your views. I am a nice person, work in a caring profession and I hate that Mumsnet only like to see one side of a story represented. It is ridiculous. How can people debate issues when only one side is allowed to be seen ...
This is very true. I have had messages deleted and also got banned for a while just because my views went against the majority. Absolutely everything was factual but as it's their site I guess it's up to them what stays and what goes.

MNHQ are very clear that application of the guidelines is up to the moderator.

MatildaIThink · 14/12/2021 17:15

The mods do seem to have got a lot more trigger happy over the last few months, some subjects they seem to want to shut down very quickly as well, trans being one of them.

Meadowbreeze · 14/12/2021 17:20

@franca123 😂 I should've clarified. I said that I think a lot of the house extensions on historic buildings (not listed) are really ugly and I hate that the housing situation has got so bad people are having to extend and ruin the beauty of these homes.
Anyway, it didn't go down well and it was deleted very quickly.

AlfonsoTheUnrepentant · 14/12/2021 17:21

Ooops. Guessed wrong!

Meadowbreeze · 14/12/2021 17:21

@MatildaIThink I've definitely noticed this. I never used to have anything removed and the only ones I saw removed were ones that were obviously very very rude or outing.
I wonder if it's because journalists snoop so much on here?

Meadowbreeze · 14/12/2021 17:22

@AlfonsoTheUnrepentant haha it's ok, I wouldn't be surprised if that opinion wasn't acceptable was deleted too.

Like that RIBA winner? Seems very uncontroversial. I'm not surprised though. The moderation here is ludicrous.

Meadowbreeze · 14/12/2021 17:39

@Franca123 I just find them all ugly from the outside to be honest and they destroy the look of really beautiful and pleasing to look at Victorian and Edwardian homes, at least from the back anyway.
I won't elaborate further though, don't want the ops thread taken down.

PferdeMerde · 14/12/2021 17:43

@Franca123

Why on earth can't you dislike extensions? Wait! Hair extensions or house extensions?
If it's the thread I'm thinking about, they said extensions made the street look like "ugly shanty towns". I can kind of see how people found it snobby or even racist. (I didn't report it btw)
Meadowbreeze · 14/12/2021 17:49

@PferdeMerde hahaah I knew someone would remember it. Anyway, I didn't say exactly that but I don't want to derail ops thread. Either way, I still agree with OP. Much less upsetting things are taken down from here and she makes a great point.

Franca123 · 14/12/2021 18:00

I'm always surprised by the things which we now link directly to 'racism'. Living in a shanty town is some intrinsic attribute to a particular race or races. To say that it is in fact.....a bit......racist. Oh the tangled Web we weave.

Franca123 · 14/12/2021 18:01

Isn't some intrinsic attribute!!!! Isn't!

Orcadianrythyms · 14/12/2021 18:03

The weirdest one was the Naga Munchety one - unless it took a weird turn when I wasn't looking it was just commenting on a minor celeb being good/ shit at presenting on TV Confused Got deleted as ' not in the spirit of mumsnet' . I wondered if Naga complained?

FindingMeno · 14/12/2021 18:04

All the juicy threads are deleted.

Meadowbreeze · 14/12/2021 18:05

@franca123 Indeed. I did try to say this but...my thread was deleted and I was a bit shocked by the whole thing. The fact that someone's thread is deleted because 'its not going anywhere positive' isn't really a good enough reason on a public platform. Anyway, there are opinions and then there are opinions. I shall log off now.
