To wonder why the nurse that was found dead…

Young nurse Petra Srnciva vanished two weeks ago on her way home from work in South London who worked at the Evelina hospital was found dead in a park yesterday.

It really makes me wonder why there has been nothing like the kind of concern over other young women in this past year that caused national outcry.

I find it really strange there’s been no real concern over her at all. So shocking and sad.

@Tilltheend99 it isn't now being reported as a stranger murder.

BlusteryLake · 13/12/2021 12:21

Murders happen all the time. The level of media attention they receive depends largely on :

  • Which police force is handling it and how much public help they need in catching the killer
  • What else is competing for the world's attention at the time
  • How unique the murder is
  • Age, race, gender and general "attractiveness" of the victim sadly
  • How media savvy the victim's family and friends are.
MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 13/12/2021 12:27

The young woman who caused the national outcry worked in advertising. All of her friends worked in advertising and in the media and knew exactly how to keep her name out there. It was also an extremely odd case as a police officer was involved.

They arranged vigils and protests and everything else that we saw and it's what caught the attention and forced the MET to act because the world was watching them

RoyalCorgi · 13/12/2021 12:37

One of the obvious reasons why there hasn't been that much media attention is that she was living alone and apparently had no family, or even friends, in the country. It's noticeable that no one even reported her missing until she'd been gone five days. So no one to put out emotional appeals in the press for her, no one to campaign on social media etc. In other words, very little for journalists to write about.

BungleandGeorge · 13/12/2021 12:43

I heard it on the news on more than one occasion. I heard earlier that they don’t think anyone else is involved, I suspect the circumstances had something to do with it. It’s actually quite shocking how often disappearances/ murder/ suicide so happen whilst most people are unaware. Poor woman, and her family

Briony123 · 13/12/2021 12:56

Hundreds of people go missing every year, they always have. For a variety of reasons only a few really make a splash in the news. These reasons include how photogenic the missing person is/was and whether there is other news.

PigletJohn · 13/12/2021 12:59

I believe there are around 600-700 murders in UK every year.

not many of them make the national news.

In my small town I heard of two murders in the last ten years or so, they were reported locally but no more than a few lines outside the area.

DickMabutt73962 · 13/12/2021 13:09

@JurgensCakeBabyJesus

Sarah Everard was the exception rather than the rule, women go missing and are murdered and go missing every week and it barely gets a mention. She was young, blonde, white, middle class and had connections in PR/media. Violence against women is seen as an inevitability in this country and doesn't usually prompt that level of outrage, it's disgusting.
This is exactly why.

@Redarrow2017

Sadly I agree in part to this, not just in this domain but in general in the UK. Especially if you’re not well connected, middle classed + and successful you don’t really matter starting with how our government views the public right down to the media.

They are now reporting it as a non-suspicious death, poor woman. I hope she finds peace now.

LittleGwyneth · 13/12/2021 16:17

I think a lot of it is about how much noise the friends and family make, and how it takes on social media.

hivemindneeded · 13/12/2021 22:23

@kirinm - I read it on a news website after googling her because I'd not heard about it either until this thread. If I can find it again, I'll link the page.

hivemindneeded · 13/12/2021 22:25

It was in the Mail

TractorAndHeadphones · 13/12/2021 22:39

Why are people equating media attention with being someone who matters?
There’s no realistic possibility of reporting on everyone who goes missing. It would in fact have the opposite effect because people would become inured to it.

BridStar · 13/12/2021 22:44

Because they said the circumstances aren't suspicious, ie: it's a suicide.

This 😢
MMBaranova · 13/12/2021 23:49

Interviews with her father are appearing on Czech sites and television, including TV Nova. It seems that the last contact with her family was on the day she first missed work. She had a longstanding relationship with the man who was arrested. The father had not been told much about the relationship as he seems to have not approved of the man being Black British. In an article posted on CNN Prima Cz he says that the information provided b y the police was vague.

FrownedUpon · 14/12/2021 00:01

This isn’t a murder though, it’s a suicide so I don’t get the comparison.

julieca · 14/12/2021 00:48

There was a serial killer in my City who murdered three women. It got very little press attention. Lots of murders are not reported.

Doubledoorsontogarden · 14/12/2021 06:10

I saw this in the news OP, I’m in the south east, it was a main article.

Tillsforthrills · 14/12/2021 06:19

@FrownedUpon

She vanished on her way home from work 2 weeks ago and only yesterday have the police said it’s not suspicious.

Rubyupbeat · 14/12/2021 06:40

There has been lots of news about her.
Her death has been reported as not suspicious, so there will be much less coverage now.

If we're looking for injustices is that because she had a black boyfriend they could arrest..
