Not brilliant. What’s it made out of? And who fitted it?

GinIronic · 12/12/2021 12:01

I am not an expert but it doesn’t look good does it?

DrManhattan · 12/12/2021 12:02

The marble effect isn't the same where the pieces meet so it looks a bit haphazard.

Careerswapper · 12/12/2021 12:03

No YANBU it looks terrible! I don’t have granite tops but if I did, I think I would want the marbling to go in one direction. The joint is really visible too.

billyt · 12/12/2021 12:04

It does look a bit messy where the cure of the top is but it's difficult to make an almost seamless joint in a light coloured worktop.

Ours are black and you can' see the join.

Unfortunately, there's no saying they would do any better with another try.

Many years ago I did a spell fitting kitchens for a company. I'm an Electrician by trade and an avid DIY-er and slowly got more and more involved in the rest of the works. Getting good joint even when your've made sure the biscuits in the joint are correct and the joining bolt is aligned straight it's still difficult.

Depends if you can live with it?

BiggerBoat1 · 12/12/2021 12:04

No, that's shit.

billyt · 12/12/2021 12:04

curve not cure

LazyDoll · 12/12/2021 12:04

Agree with pp. Also why isn’t the cut straight? I don’t understand the need for the curve Confused

billyt · 12/12/2021 12:05

I doubt you'd get the marbling to line up as it runs along the worktop so where it meets at 90 degrees will always be a bit of a mis-match

Londoncatshed · 12/12/2021 12:05

I wouldn’t be happy with this. Did they ask if you were happy about the marble running the opposite way? I wouldn’t be. The join isn’t good either. I suppose it depends on how much you paid and if they discussed with you.

Thatldo · 12/12/2021 12:06

Sorry,it looks awful.I would not accept that botch.the marble effect looks "against the grain" where it meets and the cut looks wonky.was it a professional who did this job?

ForeverQuery · 12/12/2021 12:14

No I definitely can't live with that, it's stressing me out looking at it because it's so obvious
Thanks for clarifying that it's awful and I'll be on the phone first thing tomorrow
I had so much going on when they'd done it I didn't really notice at first but now it's the first thing I see when I go in to the kitchen!

Where the curve is - as a pp said - it looks a bit ropey. Not shit, but a bit ropey. If my DH or dad had done it, I would be OK with it I guess, but this is not really acceptable for a professional job tbh.

HoardingSamphireSaurus · 12/12/2021 12:26

When you discussed the worktop there should have been a discussion about the joins. It costs more to have them mitred into the corners - and that's probably what you were expecting.

Have a chat with them, but it would mean replacing most, if not all, of it.

junglejane66 · 12/12/2021 12:26

You need the curve, there isnt anyway it would fit otherwise, you cant do a straight line, it just wouldn't work, unless you know how to do it? If its a laminate top, then they use a jig to cut it
LookItsMeAgain · 12/12/2021 12:42

Nope - I wouldn't be happy with that at all. Why does there have to be a join there at all? Couldn't they cut it out of the one piece and to fit the area required? There was no attempt at even making the grain in the surface flow the same way. Really poorly done.

Lonelycrab · 12/12/2021 12:53

Yes the curve is normal, all corner joins I have ever seen are curved like that.

It looks like whatever did the cut wasn’t sharp, typical ragged edges you get when a blade gets blunt. Personally I could live with that though, just looks a bit scrappy when you look closely.

Ozanj · 12/12/2021 12:56

You shouldn’t need joins unless you’re using granite and have a really large space to cover. The fact that they gave them to you in such a small space suggests they’re probably using offcuts from someone else’s kitchen. I’d be raising hell about this.

Zilla1 · 12/12/2021 13:00

Two issues, the quality of the joint and the odd decision to orient the two pieces of the joints in different 'marble flow' directions. I would not accept the latter approach.

TiddleTaddleTat · 12/12/2021 13:04

Is this marble or laminate ?

justaweeone · 12/12/2021 13:17

It's shocking!
Hope you can get it sorted out.

WhatsitWiggle · 12/12/2021 13:31

They don't look the same level. Can you feel a ridge when you run your hand over the join? Or is it the glue that's visible?

Theblacksheepandme · 12/12/2021 13:32

It looks terrible but everything can be sorted. Have they been paid already? You will have more control of the situation if they haven't.

Loudestcat14 · 12/12/2021 13:36

I wouldn't accept that. If it does have to have a join, the marble effect should at least be matched up to run in the same direction. Was it pre-cut by the supplier or by the fitter? If it's latter, you'll have more recourse because they shouldn't have sent such a shoddy match. If it's the fitter, it's trickier, because you might have to get them to cover the cost of a new worktop if they can't salvage it.

Doodar · 12/12/2021 13:42

Awful, should be one piece
