Dd is 25 suspects she has pcos unable to get confirmed as the GP won’t do much. She has very irregular periods though. She’s told me she doesn’t use conception as it’s unlikely she would get pregnant. Aibu to think if you don’t want a baby you should use conception.

If you don't want a baby then no, conception is the last thing you want.

Contraception on the other hand, yes she should be using that!

Givemeyourlove56 · 11/12/2021 19:28

Sorry was an autocorrect.

People that don't use contraception are either stupid or secretly want a baby. Which is she?

Mammyofasuperbaby · 11/12/2021 19:31

Absolutely.
I have pcos and have been pregnant 5 times in the last 6 years. Due to having pcos I've also had 2 premature babies, severe pre eclampsia, growth restricted babies and 3 miscarriages.
I fall pregnant relatively easily but have high risk pregnancies and often lose my babies. I dont want to have another so we are using contraception

Mammyofasuperbaby · 11/12/2021 19:32

Just to add that 3 of my pregnancies nearly killed me at ages 22,25 and 26

DeepaBeesKit · 11/12/2021 19:34

Ha I've got several mates who've conceived naturally and unexpectedly with pcos. She's asking for trouble!

stalkersaga · 11/12/2021 19:35

Personally, I've long ago lost count of the number of threads I've read on here that start "I have PCOS and thought I couldn't have a baby/it would take ages but we conceived first time".

Givemeyourlove56 · 11/12/2021 19:37

Mammyofasuperbaby I’m so sorry that must have been so difficult for you. Don’t believe she wants a baby she has quite a care free lifestyle and would imagine she wants to keep it like that. Plus she’s saving for a house and has always said she would like the house before a baby.

Not only that, should you not be on contraception to treat it as well?

FreedomFaith · 11/12/2021 19:38

Your daughter is stupid and you need to teach her better. She's lucky she's not already pregnant.

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 11/12/2021 19:41

I never have as I knew I wanted my chances we're slim conceiving naturally so decided that if I was lucky enough to fall pregnant then I'd keep it. That said, I was in a long term relationship at that point.

onlychildhamster · 11/12/2021 19:43

@shouldistop oh I don't know. I have been using the withdrawal method with DH since I was 22. I am 29. It's been 7 years and no pregnancy. I don't have PCOS. The withdrawal method isn't contraception. I have no idea why this is so but it has worked for many years and it means I don't suffer from any side effects of contraception. I talked to a fertility doctor before and she said that it didn't necessarily mean I was infertile.i guess I will know when I actually TTC. We own our flat, are in a stable relationship and would not even consider aborting.

Op didn't mention if she was married. I wouldn't even consider not using contraception if I wasn't married. Cos if I wasn't married and I had to give up my job to look after a child (for example if the baby was born with a disability so mainstream childcare wasn't an option), I would get nothing if the relationship broke down.

BlueMoon23 · 11/12/2021 19:45

I have PCOS and conceived naturally twice. I also had irregular periods before having kids. I wonder if her reaction is part of her actual processing of the condition. It does take a while to come to terms with. If she is having less than 4 periods a year it may be worth her speaking to the GP about the pill to ensure she gets enough oestrogen to protect her from other possible health conditions.

onlychildhamster · 11/12/2021 19:45

My friend with PCOS had a baby at 37 within first year of trying. She was actually trying though!

JurgensCakeBabyJesus · 11/12/2021 19:47

I have PCOS quite severe symptoms, told at eighteen I would need intervention to conceive and even then it would be difficult. Came off the pill at 34 had one cycle and fell pregnant with no assistance, cycle monitoring etc. She's being foolish

Givemeyourlove56 · 11/12/2021 19:47

Not married no she’s not been with her current boyfriend long three month ish. I would say.

Jools Oliver and Posh have PCOS….

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 11/12/2021 19:49

YANBU

I have a heard of so many women who have PCOS and get pregnant when they thought they couldn’t. I think it’s so well known about nowadays that there is really only one reason not to use contraception if you have PCOS and that’s if you want to get pregnant.

AuntieStella · 11/12/2021 19:49

Unless having a child wouid be a welcome turn of events for both prospective parents, then of course you should use contraception

If it was a case that a bit later on is the main plan, but because it might not be straightforward to conceive and it wouldn't be disastrous if it happened now, then it would be ok. All other circs, it wouldn't,

Zelda93 · 11/12/2021 19:49

I have pcos and have gotten pregnant three times very easily but only fully went to term on one of those pregnancies so yes it's very easy to get pregnant with pcos.

Benjispruce5 · 11/12/2021 19:50

My understanding is that PCOS does not mean you are infertile. She is being very foolish.

whatagloriousthingtobe · 11/12/2021 19:55

Having pcos means it may be harder to fall pregnant, not impossible. I have pcos and have a ds who i conceived naturally after years of unprotected sex with my partner, but I've also been trying for number 2 since he was born and zilch.

jelliedeells · 11/12/2021 19:57

My dsis and df both have pcos. Have four children and have had six pregnancies between them, neither of them tried for longer than three months each time.

TuftyMarmoset · 11/12/2021 19:58

Yes definitely - PCOS doesn’t necessarily mean no ovulation. Plenty of women with PCOS conceive naturally. Hormonal contraception can also help with PCOS symptoms.

CharlotteRose90 · 11/12/2021 19:59

I’ve had pcos for years. I use contraception on and off . I haven’t been caught yet sadly so I no longer use it.
