Can you eat fat free Greek yoghurt 1 day past use by date?

I'm cooking tacos for dinner this evening and I always serve Greek yoghurt rather than sour cream as it's just so fatty! Anyhow the yoghurt that's in the fridge has a use by date of yesterday 09/12... is that still ok or should I tell one of the teenagers to run to the shop and buy new?

It's fine! My personal line for yogurt is that if it's not going mouldy (usually starts around the lid), it's good to eat.

FluffyBooBoo · 10/12/2021 17:04

Has it been opened?

If not, I would use it. If it has been, I wouldn't.

StripyCamel · 10/12/2021 17:04

I often eat it a few days past to be honest. As long as it smells ok. It might have separated a bit, just give it a stir.

jennywasafriendofmrbrightside · 10/12/2021 17:04

Unopened - will be fine

PiesNotGuys · 10/12/2021 17:05

Used up old yoghurt in flatbreads yesterday. It was two weeks past it’s date. Tastes fine looks fine is fine.

RatherBeRiding · 10/12/2021 17:05

I'm very casual with best before and use by dates - if it's not obviously 'off' i use it. Food manufacturers have to give guidelines but food is very unlikely to become inedible 1 minute after midnight of the use by date.

Obviously you have to wary with uncooked meat but I imagine Greek yoghurt 24 hours 'out of date' is safe enough.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 10/12/2021 17:06

It's fine, I think in general things with a long shelf life have more leeway (so I'd never eat sushi or fish past sell by as it's only a few days, but I would with cured meats and yoghurts etc as they generally have a few weeks, so the percentage its outside its sell by date is lower).

Also with yoghurt it's really easy to tell by appearance and taste whether its ok

DoOneBoJo · 10/12/2021 17:06

Goodness yes, one day is fine.

Ringsender2 · 10/12/2021 17:08

Yoghurt is the natural way that milk has its shelf life extended by a long time.

In today's fridges, I've found it's fine more than a month past date. Completely fine and you wouldn't know fine. (That's unopened. I use opened unless it looks/smells funny or has mould. That can be 2 weeks after sell-by.)

Use it, it's fine!

Smartiepants79 · 10/12/2021 17:09

It would still be ok a week over date.
Is it growing mould?
If not, you’re all good.

CityCommuter · 10/12/2021 17:09

Yes it has been opened for about 10 days and then got forgotten about at the back of the fridge! There's no mould and it looks ok...

I passed the month mark with yogurt! As long as it looks and smells ok it’s fine

daisypond · 10/12/2021 17:10

It’s fine.

purplesequins · 10/12/2021 17:11

sniff it.
if it's not growing fuzzy mould of any colour and smells like yoghurt it's fine to use.

CityCommuter · 10/12/2021 17:11

Ok thanks all, it's good then!

I ate an unopened one that was six months out of date and suffered no ill effects. I would go for it 😃

StColumbofNavron · 10/12/2021 18:03

If it smells ok and looks ok I eat it. To be honest I never even look on the date and I buy in kilo tubs and am the only person who eats it so sometimes it prob is past date.

Suzanne999 · 10/12/2021 18:04

Smells ok? Tastes ok? Looks ok? It’s fine to use.

Cocomarine · 10/12/2021 18:06

And this is why we have food waste.

Harriethen · 10/12/2021 18:07

If it smells ok it’s fine. People throwing things out because it’s one day out of date need to give their heads a wobble.

Cookerhood · 10/12/2021 18:08

I scrape the mould from around the top of the pot & still eat it. It's a fermented product anyway Grin

Tractordiggerdump · 10/12/2021 18:10

Unless it’s moldy, I eat it. I’ve not been I’ll yet.

FirewomanSam · 10/12/2021 18:10

Doesn’t the use-by date become a bit irrelevant once it’s opened? Personally I’d want to use up yogurt within a few days of opening but I’d be guided by my sense of smell (and sight) if I wasn’t sure.

I have a very sensitive stomach so I’m more paranoid about these things than other might be though!

ufucoffee · 10/12/2021 18:11

I eat 'out of date' things all the time. I use my eyes, nose and brain to decide if they are ok. Still alive.

catfunk · 10/12/2021 18:19

I eat yoghurt well out of date as long as there's no mould
