Can you eat fat free Greek yoghurt 1 day past use by date?

I'm cooking tacos for dinner this evening and I always serve Greek yoghurt rather than sour cream as it's just so fatty! Anyhow the yoghurt that's in the fridge has a use by date of yesterday 09/12... is that still ok or should I tell one of the teenagers to run to the shop and buy new?

I have eaten yoghurt 1-2 months out of date, it was fine and even tasted the same. It's already a fermented product as PP said so it's not particularly delicate.

liveforsummer · 10/12/2021 20:52

2 weeks past it's date but unopened fine, 2 weeks before it's date but been opened 10 days or potentially more not fiMe. Don't think I'd eat anything fresh that had opened for 10 days apart for hard cheese

FerretFumbler · 10/12/2021 20:53

@jacqelinedaniels that was my first thought too!!
Was hoping it was gooseberry and cinnamon flavour.

I do sometimes wonder how some people would function without MN guiding their lives.

@WilliamofBaskerville

Food best before dates are established by the very worst of conditions - if you store them somewhere sensible they should be fine long after the ‘safety’ best before date (obviously be careful with fresh meat/fish). Dairy products are usually fine for a while after - I get so annoyed by my DH chucking milk out a day after the best before, it’s not like it turns toxic! The sniff test is fine for these. Ive eaten month old yoghurt and lived to tell the tale!
The doesn't before date isn't the issue here . It will be fine for days or even weeks after if sealed, however it will also say use within 2 or 3 days of opening. This yogurt is not only out of date but has been languishing at the back of the fridge open for at least 10 days.
liveforsummer · 10/12/2021 20:57

*best not doesn't. Auto correct being odd today

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/12/2021 20:58

Rule of thumb: if it smells/looks okay (ie not separating into liquid and solid), it’s fine.

MrsSkylerWhite · 10/12/2021 20:59

If you’re cooking with it, no question, absolutely fine.

@CityCommuter

Yes it has been opened for about 10 days and then got forgotten about at the back of the fridge! There's no mould and it looks ok...
1 day after use by ok 10 days after being opened that’s a nope from me
CityCommuter · 11/12/2021 00:03

Dinner was very nice including the yoghurt! I had no idea though that it being open for 10 days in the fridge was more risky than yoghurt past it's use by date so thanks for educating me on that...

Absolutely. With yoghurt I would eat it unless it looked/smelled/tasted bad. I don't think it ever has done and I've certainly eaten yoghurt more than day or two past its date.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 11/12/2021 00:17

OMG I have been known to scrape off a bit of mould on the edge of yoghurt about 10 days over, sniff the remainder and as long as it's not off-milk sour, eat that with no ill effects. But even if you are way less skanky than me, yoghurt is normally very generous with its use by dates.

2319inprogress · 11/12/2021 00:23

I fed my kids some (unopened) Greek yogurt early this week - dated early November Grin
& I put some of it in a cake yesterday Grin

Unless it's growing stuff that you can't scoop out it's fine.

Dillydollydingdong · 11/12/2021 00:26

Yes of course you can eat it

But it's not 'risky'. If it's really mouldy or tastes bad, don't eat it obviously, otherwise if it tastes ok, which it probably will, it is ok. If there's just a tiny bit of mould then it can be removed and the rest will be fine.

People and dates are ridiculously cautious about this sort of thing and it leads to so much good food being wasted.

liveforsummer · 11/12/2021 07:37

Tbh yogurt is never particularly risky in it's self. Or develops food spoiling bacteria not food poisoning bacteria so it will begin to sour/curdle/generally become unpleasant. Once opened this process happens faster. Yours was right at the back of the fridge though where it is colder so will in turn also the process. When open though there is also the risk of contamination from other things in the fridge and 10 days increases that chance, especially if it's not got a click on lid and is just a looslely fitted foil. You won't be able to see or smell that.

liveforsummer · 11/12/2021 07:39

meant to say it will go sour curdle/etc therefor taste unpleasant but won't land you with a salmonella or other infection

FluffyCushion123 · 11/12/2021 07:44

I’ll eat any yogurt that hasn’t ‘blown’. 2 weeks is my usual limit.

Peaplant20 · 11/12/2021 08:55

There’s nothing I wouldn’t eat one day past the date.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 11/12/2021 08:59

Just taste it! If it tastes ok it's fine.

Marvellousmadness · 11/12/2021 09:05

Hmm are you for real.
