Missing items

I ordered some bits from an online retailer over a week ago, the delivery said it was due Monday but actually ended up being delivered early on the Saturday when I wasn’t in, when I came home there was nothing delivered (I don’t have a safe place to leave any items but I checked bins/ garden anyway) I’ve asked my neighbours both have said they don’t have anything, I contacted the company on Tuesday who said they would investigate and get back to me, having not heard anything I contacted them again today to be told they first had no record of me contacting them... then When I insisted I did she told me actually she could find that I did contact them (funny that) she told me they had investigated and decided the items were delivered, despite no signature, no picture and the fact I wasn’t in, I can only assume they were left outside, she told me they decided they were left and I have to fill in a form she will email me, I’ve looked at the form and it mentioned a police investigation?! All sounds very strange never had this before over a missing item and the police don’t even come out for real crime! What should I do as they were insisting that it was left at my door, am I better off opening a dispute with me bank?

It doesn't matter if they said you signed for it, it won't be your signature so what are the police going to do about that? They won't involve the police anyway but its easy to prove you and no one in your household signed for it.

Englishrosegarden · 10/12/2021 11:43

With DHL they will have gps, a photo of where the parcel was left and a signature. Ask the retailer for this information, they will have it.

Sausagedogsarethebest · 10/12/2021 11:54

Don't give up with this OP. Be firm that it's not your signature on the form and inform them you'll be reporting fraud to the police if they don't get it sorted.

Loyaultemelie · 10/12/2021 11:55

Surely though you would actually welcome a police investigation (not that they would actually bother in all likelihood but assuming they did), you didn't sign for it, you can provide your signature which won't match whatever scrawl DHL has so you would get refunded or replacement items in that event.

Not when they were pretty much accusing me of lying and said I have signed for it, I’m on the phone to dhl now I want to see a copy of this signature

No couriers or Royal Mail posties seem to be collecting signatures where I live. I've had 'signed for' parcels where I haven't needed to sign - it stopped with the pandemic, I assume because it would be impractical to keep sanitising the digital signature pad.

Tee20x · 10/12/2021 12:05

I find the GPS thing a load of shit too. Especially for companies like Hermes and delivery addresses like mine which are a massive block of flats. Yes the GPS location says he was here - doesn't guarantee they delivered my parcel or prove that it wasn't stolen.

I've had Amazon couriers leave my parcel at the bottom of my block of flats

TurnUpTurnip · 10/12/2021 12:05

I’ve got through to dhl who said they aren’t taking signatures at the moment due to Covid but taking pictures and the picture is proof it was delivered. she has sent me a picture of the item on my front door step, closed front door! And is saying as the door is closed this is not counted as proof and that I should contact the company again and they(dhl) will confirm it isn’t counted as proof it was delivered

OP posts:
Tee20x · 10/12/2021 12:05

And only noted it being delivered because a neighbour knocked and bought it to me. Also Hermes leaving parcels outside my front door after 11pm so they've been out there overnight and could easily been taken.

It's ridiculous.

TurnUpTurnip · 10/12/2021 12:06

I’m going to email the company rather than call so I have a paper trail

OP posts:
Thegreencup · 10/12/2021 12:10

If there is a picture of it on your doorstep then report it police as stolen from your doorstep. Give the crime number to the company.

I've unfortunately had parcels delivered to the wrong address. We were able to prove it was the wrong address with the courier and got a refund.

Percypigg · 10/12/2021 12:22

If it was left on your doorstep then it was not delivered. I had the same issue with Hermes and a John Lewis order. JL refunded me. My doorstep is not my 'safe place', I was in the house at the time but the driver didn't knock or ring the bell.

Your contract is with the store. They have to step up and investigate properly. Clearly you didn't sign for the parcel, DHL aren't asking for signatures so someone is lying.

On a related note, I am aware of many items being stolen and sold on for cash by delivery drivers. I've been offered high end goods and so have friends. The drivers have iPhones, household gadgets, TVs. It's pretty disgusting.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 10/12/2021 12:25

They aren't accusing you of lying, it's a bog standard email sent out to everyone who has the same issue. Just fill the form out, or if you like, make a massive drama out of it. It really is no skin off their nose either way.

TurnUpTurnip · 10/12/2021 12:35

I’ve never had to sign anything before for parcels gone missing so no it isn’t standard at all.

Ohmygodyesthatsit · 10/12/2021 12:36

Honestly i used to work in retail and the whole are you accusing me if lying thing is so annoying. I dont know you, you may be lying you may be telling the truth, its not personal.

TurnUpTurnip · 10/12/2021 12:42

I said it because they are claiming my items were delivered, I have since been sent proof by DHL that they weren’t so hopefully it’s solved now

The point is, it's clearly a standard policy for this company. You're taking it terribly personally.

Gonnagetgoing · 10/12/2021 12:50

I had this recently - DHL or Yodel had signed for something on my behalf whilst I was out for the afternoon - and like you - it came early so of course I didn't stay home to wait for it.

I got a similar email and simply scanned and sent across a copy of my signature - after checking with neighbours that they hadn't signed for it.

I think more retailers send this out to cover their backs as lots of people must pull a fast one and keep an item but then say it's not been received.

youngestisapsycho · 10/12/2021 12:51

Saw Amazon guy on my camera the other day... he just flung the package on my doorstep and walked off... didn't even knock on the door.

Masdintle · 10/12/2021 13:00

I got a photo of a package outside my open front door as proof of delivery. Except it wasn't my front door! Some delivery drivers are CFs

lockdownalli · 10/12/2021 13:04

All you need to do is complete the form they sent you and they will refund it.

It's not as big a drama as you think. Just follow the process.

naughty40me · 10/12/2021 13:06

I found a parcel that I had been waiting for stuck behind a bush in my front garden. Must have been there about 3 days before I noticed it!
No emails or anything.
It was a parcel from ebay delivered by Hermes. They're crap around here.
Luckily it wasn't anything expensive.

Yep, I had some fitted sheets sent to my son at uni - after 2 weeks chased it up for them to say it had been delivered and sent “proof” of the parcel, a photo of his front door…. It wasn’t his front door or his neighbour’s - I sent the company a photo of his door including the neighbours doors and they agreed to refund

Massively this. Seems to be a lot of drama over nothing
