This is such a 1st world problem I know, but AIBU to spend £300 on a TV stand?

So, yes I can afford it (and I know I am lucky to be in that position).

I have spent most of my life never spending a lot on anything - my sofas cost me £300 off FB marketplace, our kitchen table and chairs was £20, all our bedroom furniture was free or under £50, you get the idea.

my TV is currently on a metal/ glass cantilever stand (think that's what they're called) which cost about £40 and I bloody hate it. I've been looking for alternatives for ages, and I struggle to find anything big enough for our massive 60 inch TV (electricals is one of the few things I do spend money on but even so our TV was about £450 so as cheap as I could get).

So I've seen the perfect TV stand but it's £300 which seems v expensive and is almost causing palpitations. It comes pre assembled and I can have it by Monday. I'm hoping it will stop my living room looking like student digs and more like a 'nice' adult room.

But is it too much money? Should I keep looking for a cheaper version? (most of them are only 100-130cm and due to enormous TV I need something bigger) Or should I just buy it as a Christmas present to myself?

Most people just buy what they want to buy, as long as they can afford it!
Our TV stand was around £450, if I remember correctly. It’s solid oak and we had it made to fit the space.

MattDamon · 09/12/2021 13:19

Have you tried Ebay? You might be able to find it, or something similar cheaper.

My TV stand cost £450 so no judgement here, btw. Grin

Thegreencup · 09/12/2021 13:20

I refuse to comment until I have seen said £300 TV stand.

Haus1234 · 09/12/2021 13:21

If you can afford it and you want it then it’s fine! I would like to see the link though to see if I also need it (I do not).

pamplemousses · 09/12/2021 13:22

I have looked on ebay, I could only find one that was similar (but not as nice) and once the £30 delivery charge was added it was about the same price.

Here's a link to the one I am coveting:

I also know that MN is generally very against TVs on walls, but can you not just hang the TV on the wall?

Thegreencup · 09/12/2021 13:24

Have you looked in The Range? Reason I ask is they also do that Compton range, but a bit cheaper than Dunelm.

pamplemousses · 09/12/2021 13:24

I don't have anything against TVs on walls but our walls are all plasterboard - they can barely support the weight of a curtain rail (even with the proper fixings).

I think it’s nice and I don’t think it’s outrageously priced - but I am the woman who bought her tv stand on Tikamoon and I smile every time I look at it - which to be fair is quite a lot ..

FluffyBooBoo · 09/12/2021 13:32

You can afford it, it's the most suitable one that you like that you've found.

Unless you think you'll find something you like more, then you should buy it.

It might be worth waiting till after Christmas in case it ends up in the sale, but if you'd rather get it for Christmas then I see no reason for you not to go for it

Anonymous48 · 09/12/2021 13:32

I voted that YABU, simply because you feel like you have to ask permission or that there's something wrong with spending that much on a tv stand. It's not even a huge amount of money. It's not thousands of pounds. But even if it was, you're an adult and you can afford it. Why shouldn't you buy it if you want to?

Seriously, get a backbone!

YesILikeItToo · 09/12/2021 13:35

Buy the stand!

yourestandingonmyneck · 09/12/2021 13:38

No, it is nice and it is what you want.

I think you could probably find a cheaper one either second hand or just a different brand, but if it's what you want and it's convenient to get it delivered already assembled just go for it.

I hate hate hate glass tv stands so I can see why you want rid of yours. I'm also not keen on furniture designed around appliances, but I wouldn't say that's a "tv stand" as such. It's a nice piece of furniture that will fit your TV.

In the future, when you have a different tv or whatever, that will still be a useable piece of furniture.

I think voting that way will make it look like a vote saying she's unreasonable and it's too much money.
DustyMaiden · 09/12/2021 13:40

I see no problem with spending £3000 if you can afford it and like it.

Suzanne999 · 09/12/2021 13:47

I’m usually for buying recycled, up cycled items but that is a nice piece of furniture. Correct size for your TV so safer. If you can afford it, buy it.

Aimee1987 · 09/12/2021 13:47

That's lovely and I would say worth it. If you can afford it go for it.call it a Christmas treat.

I also have spent alot of time broke so buy off market place ect but am now getting towards the position where I'm starting to look for good quality long term products to make my home a home.
Recently bought some le cruset pots with a similiar price tage and cant imagine life without them

0palescent · 09/12/2021 13:53

You can afford it, and you like it, so just buy it! Ours cost between 350 and 400, I can't remember and it isn't on the site anymore. I'd pay it again, it's solid, came ready built, feels and looks much better than the one we could afford previously.

Anonymous48 · 09/12/2021 13:54

Unfortunately you're probably right, but I can't begin to claim that she's being reasonable!

I am not good at spending money on things like this - technology like TVs, washing machines etc yes, but not furniture; I looked at getting new sofas a few years ago, costed it out in DFS, £1800! So I got my ones off FB marketplace instead as that just felt like wild expenditure. I've wanted fitted wardrobes for years but the cheapest quote I've had is £4k so I've done without. But this just feels like something I do really want. And the cheaper alternatives are either too small if in wood, or the glass/ metal one Iike I have (and hate) already.

I don't think the price is excessive, for what it is, but have you looked on specialist sites that sell nothing but TV stands? You might find one you like even more. I've linked to one below, but I think there are others.

So just buy it already!

You've done your research, you can afford it. What is the issue?

ReeseWitherfork · 09/12/2021 14:09

It's beautiful, buy it!

100% go for it then!

Whether you buy it and feel hesitant and guilty; or buy it and enjoy every second of it, the purchase is made either way.

So buy it and enjoy it! Smile

PooWillyNameChange · 09/12/2021 14:09

I think it's fine if you want it and with a 60" telly you'll struggle to find something secondhand. If your TV was smaller I'd suggest getting a secondhand solid wood one to paint and replace the handles as that's £300 of mostly MDF by the looks of things!
