This is such a 1st world problem I know, but AIBU to spend £300 on a TV stand?

So, yes I can afford it (and I know I am lucky to be in that position).

I have spent most of my life never spending a lot on anything - my sofas cost me £300 off FB marketplace, our kitchen table and chairs was £20, all our bedroom furniture was free or under £50, you get the idea.

my TV is currently on a metal/ glass cantilever stand (think that's what they're called) which cost about £40 and I bloody hate it. I've been looking for alternatives for ages, and I struggle to find anything big enough for our massive 60 inch TV (electricals is one of the few things I do spend money on but even so our TV was about £450 so as cheap as I could get).

So I've seen the perfect TV stand but it's £300 which seems v expensive and is almost causing palpitations. It comes pre assembled and I can have it by Monday. I'm hoping it will stop my living room looking like student digs and more like a 'nice' adult room.

But is it too much money? Should I keep looking for a cheaper version? (most of them are only 100-130cm and due to enormous TV I need something bigger) Or should I just buy it as a Christmas present to myself?

If its what you want and you can afford it, get it. It does not matter what others think.

YANBU at all…I have the smaller corner version of this which was half the price of yours. At the time, having left my ex-P with not much more than the clothes on my back it was a lot of money to me. I’m glad I bought it, it’s lovely and great quality for the price. So go for it!

Chunkymonkey13 · 09/12/2021 14:14

You can’t take money with you, we can’t go on nice holidays….do it!

I would say have a look at the cotswold company as we have had some lovely pieces from there but it’s similar prices 😳

xILikeJamx · 09/12/2021 14:21

If you like it and can afford it - just bloody buy it!

We aren't poor, but certainly not rich. Pretty much everything in our house is Ikea as we've never had massive budgets for things and I get a discount there through my work.

However, saw this sideboard when painting the living room and just couldn't stop myself - makes me happy every time I walk in there! Grin Just look at it! Halo

It’s lovely.

Why pay lots for a big tv and then stick it on a cheap/not nice stand?

I really hate TVs on walls

What was your childhood like? Did your parents worry about money?

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 09/12/2021 18:21

I think mine was about £175, twelve years ago - a lot of money by my standards, but it's outlived three televisions and survived cats bouncing all over it. Better to buy one quality one than end up spending more replacing cheap ones every few years when they break or get shabby.

pamplemousses · 09/12/2021 18:26

We never had much money when I was a child, we did have nice things nonetheless but they were mostly carefully saved for over months or years, my parents were never in a position to just go out and buy something expensive.

@pamplemousses

I am not good at spending money on things like this - technology like TVs, washing machines etc yes, but not furniture; I looked at getting new sofas a few years ago, costed it out in DFS, £1800! So I got my ones off FB marketplace instead as that just felt like wild expenditure. I've wanted fitted wardrobes for years but the cheapest quote I've had is £4k so I've done without. But this just feels like something I do really want. And the cheaper alternatives are either too small if in wood, or the glass/ metal one Iike I have (and hate) already.
I do this!

The only new bits of furniture I own in my entire house are my bed, my TV stand and my desk I think.

I have the money, I just can't bring myself to spend it when everything else is still functional.

I'm glad you bought the TV stand though! I have a solid oak one with metal pin legs and I love it.

Thwackit · 09/12/2021 21:39

I don’t see how it could be unreasonable. You need it, you like it, you can afford it, it affects nobody else.

KupoNutCoffee · 09/12/2021 21:57

Glad to hear you bought it!

I sometimes struggle to justify these big purchases, and even the little big purchases.

For future reference, I try and divide cost by years of use, and factor in if it will cope with a change around.

£100 boots will last potentially several years....the £20 will last the season...

A good quality solid TV stand should last too - and will cope with moving house - or even across the room..

One day, I will have a house that is not primarily furnished with IKEA....

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 09/12/2021 22:09

Oh its tricky transitioning from that mindset isnt it. Im trying to invest in stuff that will last - think about having it in your house for the next 30 years - thats 10 quid a year. Ive also learned that if I can afford something then I shouldnt let the cost put me off. Quite often the more expensive is the least hassle which is something I value and am therefor quite happy to pay for. Not always, but sometimes.

WelshDaffodil · 10/12/2021 00:20

I once bought a Superking Bed frame for £630 Shock. It was worth the money just to release me from the torment of constantly Googling beds. Still got it years later, it's a bed for life Grin

hardtobelieve · 10/12/2021 02:01

YANBU that is a solidly built unit and not just a tv stand.
