Working from home

Hamjamwich · 08/12/2021 20:38

I know it sounds trivial but I could have cried when Boris said work from home.
Need some personal space ! DH is in the office 1/2 days a week and it's the only time the house is empty

I hear you OP Flowers
I continue to work outside the home and DH has never gone back. They had just started talking about office 1or 2 days a week, when omicron started being talked about.
I love DH very much, but I am literally never alone in the house now.
I have to send him out at the weekends sometimes if I'm off (shift worker) just to get some space

This is the link for the WFH tax page. I know some employers are paying an allowance directly to staff but my understand is that this is different.

@gannett

I always wonder why some women feel entitled to have the house they share with their partner as their sole domain during the day. Is it not their husbands' house as well? When, if ever, does he get to have it all to himself for a whole working day?
I guess she is unhappy because he is working from home, not the fact he is actually at home, there is a big difference between the two scenarios, working at home can have a huge affect on stay at home partner, they have to change the way they live in their own home to accommodate the working partner, I can see why this could be really stressful.
simpledeer · 09/12/2021 11:44

I live in a tiny house but live alone so have loved wfh, very happy to continue (haven't been back as offices not reopened and many of them will be closed as staff expected to wfh more after pandemic)

However, I would have lost my mind if I still lived with XH and was trying to wfh. He would have done my head in, wanting sex, sandwiches, conversation. FUCK OFF!!

It's all very well for posters saying if you don't want to wfh then don't, but for most workers, the reality will be employers will fully close offices. The cost of keeping it open just in case Pam from accts fancies a day away from the old man just won't be seen as justifiable.

It's a really difficult situation but hopefully it's not for too much longer.

37,000 staff and students total in DH's workplace and only 6 new cases of covid. Admin staff working from home now 😡

Prevention is better than cure.

I had one guy during lockdowns working in his living room which was in the eaves. Wife and two small children running around in the background. Horror. No idea how / if he got any work down. Can only assume they were in a tiny London flat. Everytime he unmuted himself it was mayhem.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/12/2021 14:01

Poor guy, I feel really sorry for him.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 09/12/2021 14:06

I agree. My DH works from home all the time, he has his own office which is the spare bedroom in the house, but I still really prefer it on the odd day he's out. I work from home but I'm self-employed so I'm in and out during the day, either with clients or doing paperwork at home. I really like the separation of working home, I think it's better for everyone.

Snoozer11 · 09/12/2021 14:23

I WFH a lot and obviously prefer it when I'm home by myself. But I realise it's necessary to compromise so dont complain.

I don't think someone who doesn't work has any right to complain about someone else being in the house all day, when in fact they are too.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/12/2021 14:28

I prefer it when DH is there so I've got someone to talk to! I miss the chat and laughter in the office.

Doesn't work? My job is outside the home so when I arrive back I want to do the normal thing and relax

@Hamjamwich I wasn't accusing you of not working. I just meant in general.

Darkpheonix · 09/12/2021 17:12

But unless you live alone. There's no automatic right to have your house to yourself.

Is everything else OK in the relationship?

BoudecaBains · 09/12/2021 17:17

@EnnAndJay

Do you have a garage or summerhouse?

Stick a portable heater and his desk in there.

Gosh, can anybody still get in their garage ?
NothingIsWrong · 09/12/2021 17:44

I've told my boss that WFH was so detrimental to my MH last year that I will be maintaining my 3 days in the office and he was very supportive

fakereview · 09/12/2021 17:56

You can claim tax relief for WFH. It works out about £24 a month for each of us, so we have just short of £50 a month to put towards increased utilities. They can apply on the gov.uk website

Yes. My concern with that is that if you claim for that the local council will come calling and say they want business rates because you are using your property partly for business reasons. As it was there was some suggestion that if you added a garden room as an office there would be some sort of tax payable on it, so put a TV or gym equipment in it as well. At least if you don't claim the exemption there is no hard evidence you've been WFH.

My husband's work have said people can still go into his office for wellbeing reasons.

A colleague of mine used his car in the first lockdown. He has 4 kids. I notice now that he appears to have a small home office - maybe he managed to put a stud wall up somewhere. It's about the size of a (ore generous) loo cubicle but I guess it does the job!
fakereview · 09/12/2021 17:58

more generous

Nidan2Sandan · 09/12/2021 18:15

We went back 2 days a week in the office, and I loved it. Just seeing people again, a change of scenery and a reason to squeeze back into the work clothes and pop some make up up.

Equally, I quite like wfh. Food on tap, temperature how I like it (office is always freezing or boiling), watch tv on my lunch breaks, can chuck some laundry on or run the hoover round.

DH works from home 1 day a week, but being emergency services he cant really get away with more than that so I do have some peace and quiet (till school holidays roll around again, but my house is big enough to keep separate from the kids for the most part at least)

BiddyPop · 10/12/2021 13:50

I have had roughly 20 days in the office since February 2020. DH even less. Dd is home early after school every afternoon and goes nowhere else.

We are all cracking up...
