AIBU to think this is not a “horrible” wedding song?

For clarification: it’s a song from one of my favourite childhood films: Labyrinth. It was also sung originally by David Bowie. I thought of maybe having this as the main dance and the (few) people so far I suggested this to (not including my DH because he doesn’t know) laughed when I showed it to them and said it was a fairy dance. I don’t want people on here to sugarcoat anything , so can please listen to the song and tell me if you think it’s stupid too and you agree? It’s a gay marriage, not that should make difference, but it might influence it so I thought I’d say beforehand and wanted opinions of potential guests if they heard this at a wedding if they were invited. I really like it. I know I should think it’s about what I like and what he likes, but I’m also wanting it to be about what other people like and I don’t want to make a fool of myself if it’s not a typical possibly first dance at a wedding song?

I like it.

BridStar · 09/12/2021 08:54

People who piss in your chips aren't friends. They're just using you to snipe at and feel superior.

Trinacham · 09/12/2021 09:23

Seems very appropriate for a wedding song!

MedusasBadHairDay · 09/12/2021 09:45

It's a gorgeous song, and if you both like it then that's all that really matters.

Worldgonecrazy · 09/12/2021 09:47

I love it. It’s one of my favourite songs and I’ve always interpreted the words as saying that the person knows the other person has been through sadness but they will always be there for them,

I once went to a wedding (lesbian) where the wedding ended to ‘Dance Magic Dance’ which was great fun and suited the couple.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 09/12/2021 10:14

I think its a great song! I also grew up watching labyrinth and being totally in love with Bowie 🤣

Me and DH had a metal song as our first dance (stone sour - song 3). who cares what anyone else thinks, your first dance song is for you not anybody else.

SilverBelle · 09/12/2021 10:17

Have whatever you want. My friends had "Love of my Life" by Queen and no-one batted an eyelid.

ClockWatcher1986 · 09/12/2021 10:32

This song is ridiculously amazing, you should definitely go for it! The guests will be split into those who don't know the song, and those who have secretly always wanted this as their first dance but had it vetoed by their OH (including myself I know of four people in that position! Grin). No one will even think about the lyrics. I've been to plenty of weddings and I couldn't tell you what any of the first dances were, let alone the lyrics. But you will always remember happily dancing to this!

DrierThanANunsNasty · 09/12/2021 10:33

We had this as our wedding song as it means something really special to us, I think it’s gorgeous. And also, fuck what anyone else thinks Grin

MaHBroon · 09/12/2021 11:05

I love this!!
Who else has had amazingly untraditional music? I'd love to know! grin

Well when my mum got engaged prior to marrying my (step) dad we went out for a family dinner and she asked the band to play ‘and I love you so’ when her and my dad got up to dance.

Anyhow it turned out the band didn’t know the song so they sang ‘freedom come freedom go’ instead. I’ll never forget thd look on her face 🤣

Shedmistress · 09/12/2021 11:09

I don't remember one single 'first dance' song from the weddings I've been to.

Tal45 · 09/12/2021 11:21

Love the film and this version of the song is absolutely gorgeous. The main thing is that is has meaning for you. What did people laugh at? Maybe it's that you called it a fairy dance which sounds like it's for 5 year olds rather than two grown men in which case I'd just call it the masked ball song instead in future.

OrlandointheWilderness · 09/12/2021 12:51

I love that film and I think it's a great choice. Tbh I prefer David Bowie's version but this is beautiful too.

OrlandointheWilderness · 09/12/2021 12:53

Actually I think what I love about it is what a PP said - it's about being there for someone you love when it isn't perfect and the world is falling down. That's love, that is.

chickenpie1984 · 09/12/2021 13:00

Never heard the sing before but it is a bit west end theatre but in the dreary side.

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 09/12/2021 13:06

Ah go for it. My aunt had Against the Odds as her first dance song in the 90s. I also went to an anniversary party where they kept playing Holding Back the Years. So I don’t think people sit around listening to the lyrics.

Oldraver · 09/12/2021 13:20

I was just coming on to say I would love Away with the Fairies

DixonD · 09/12/2021 17:58

I love this song OP, and it’s your day; you do what makes you happy.

DixonD · 09/12/2021 18:00

And what a beautiful version. I’d never heard it before.

RunnerDuck2020 · 09/12/2021 18:20

I love this song, I think it’s a great choice. Labyrinth is one of my favourite films and this is a lovely version of the song - you should use it Smile

I didn’t call it a fairy dance myself! that’s what a few friends and family members described it as when I played it to them

Thanks everyone for the reassuring messages. Also to answer an earlier question: it will be a simple awkward shuffle dance 😂 I have enough on my plate without learning some choreographed routine 😂

JaninesEyePatch · 09/12/2021 18:38

@zurala

The lyrics aren't very nice but if you like it then have it
Agree with this. The melody is lovely but it starts off with "It's a sad love....." But like everyone else says, it's your wedding so it doesn't really matter what others think.
mumsiedarlingrevolta · 09/12/2021 18:39

I have never heard the song but thought very beautiful-

but really the only ppl's opinion that matter on the day are yours and your DH.

Start as you mean to go on-pick what makes you happy! Flowers

Starbonnet123 · 09/12/2021 18:47

Such a beautiful song , I've just listened to both versions and either would be lovely as your first dance or you could play both at different times during the day . Have a lovely day .
