AIBU to think this is not a “horrible” wedding song?

For clarification: it’s a song from one of my favourite childhood films: Labyrinth. It was also sung originally by David Bowie. I thought of maybe having this as the main dance and the (few) people so far I suggested this to (not including my DH because he doesn’t know) laughed when I showed it to them and said it was a fairy dance. I don’t want people on here to sugarcoat anything , so can please listen to the song and tell me if you think it’s stupid too and you agree? It’s a gay marriage, not that should make difference, but it might influence it so I thought I’d say beforehand and wanted opinions of potential guests if they heard this at a wedding if they were invited. I really like it. I know I should think it’s about what I like and what he likes, but I’m also wanting it to be about what other people like and I don’t want to make a fool of myself if it’s not a typical possibly first dance at a wedding song?

@MadameOvary81

We had Tammy Wynette- D.I.V.O.R.C.E for a laugh...

I actually like it....go for it!

I love this!! Who else has had amazingly untraditional music? I'd love to know! Grin
ShowOfHands · 08/12/2021 20:13

I love that scene in Labyrinth and find myself singing the song often. I'd be delighted to hear it at a wedding. Better than that fricking Sheeran song everybody has right now.

MichelleScarn · 08/12/2021 20:18

Worked In a hotel as a teen, a few 1st dances were to Sting and 'Every Breath you take' song about an angry stalker is it not? 😆
I love the Bowie song!

alittlequinnie · 08/12/2021 20:19

I haven't read the full thread but I went to a wedding about 7 years ago where the bride and groom had this song as their first dance. None of us knew it but it was still a lovely moment!

Go for it OP - it's your wedding - have what you like!

Bellafrenum · 08/12/2021 20:19

Such a tune - go for it.

I would cry if I heard this at a wedding, it is sooooo beautiful!!!

@Jouleigh

I'm in a same sex marriage, my wife and I got married last year. Covid made it difficult and we had to argue for music as it was seen as unnecessary.

We picked songs that most people wouldn't Amy Winehouse, Pink, Van Morrison and others. They were meaningful to us in different ways and we chose carefully. Didn't even think about what other people's opinions were tbh.

We laughed the whole way through the service as we were so happy to be getting married.

No one commented on the music, everyone was just happy for us.
It was an amazing day and yours will be too.

This is the one day you both have all the choices, if it's a meaningful song to you and your partner then have it!

Congratulations by the way, hope you both have an amazing day! ThanksWine

Thank you so much for this ! Your songs sound amazing, I would have loved to hear all of those at a wedding. Thank you everyone else for your responses too

@MaHBroon

It’s a beautiful song but do you really want your first dance to be to the lyrics -

There's such a sad love
Deep in your eyes a kind of pale jewel

Yes.. if you like it have it, but the lyrics are a bit depressing - there's something about the pain sweeps through later on...
AngeloMysterioso · 08/12/2021 20:22

I went to a wedding where the first dance was Broken Strings. Literally a song about a relationship ending because it’s fucked.

Have whatever you like.

Bellafrenum · 08/12/2021 20:22

No, I haven’t been through either of those things. Now it’s making me second guess whether others will see it that way too Sad It really hasn’t been anything like that[/quote]
Literally no one will over analyse it to that extent. I honestly think it would go down a storm.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/12/2021 20:25

Don’t need to listen. Your wedding, have what makes you (and DH, obvs.) happy.

Stath · 08/12/2021 20:27

My lovely nephew and his wife had this as their first song. It was fab.

dustandfluf · 08/12/2021 20:29

Absolutely fine! Also one my favorite films too.

People have 'every breath you take' by The Police which is essentially a song about stalking. No one bats an eyelid then!

GaolBhoAlba · 08/12/2021 20:31

Its a nice song, though I found it quite musical theatre, something you might hear at a pantomime.

DukkaTheHallsWithBoughsOfHolly · 08/12/2021 20:35

It’s better than the tedious ‘I don’t want to miss a thing’ by Aerosmith. Which is a fucking awful song.

She has a beautiful voice.

ExhaustedPigeon · 08/12/2021 20:52

I love labyrinth and this is a beautiful rendition. I'd definitely use it and feel the lyrics are about being there through the hard times - 'I'll be there for you when the world falls down.' And let's be honest, sometimes it will and at that point that's what a partner is for. Congratulations and I hope you have a fabulous wedding

Shelleyjelly80 · 08/12/2021 20:55

Do it! Chuff everyone else, that is a beautiful version and means something to you. If it was me I would definitely follow it up with Magic Dance!!

prynaithda21 · 08/12/2021 20:56

Your wedding your choice.

SequinsandStiIettos · 08/12/2021 21:03

It's perfectly lovely, won't you need to tell your other half so you can practise some kind of floaty Viennese waltz or something, rather than shuffling from one foot to the other?

Pillowaddict · 08/12/2021 21:04

I adore this song, what a lovely choice!

cakecakecheese · 08/12/2021 21:10

Go for it and then have Magic Dance later. And The Laughing Gnome. Actually just Bowie music all night Grin

RedFaerieBoots · 08/12/2021 21:10

I absolutely love this version. Thank you for sharing it.

As for your wedding its a beautiful song. Most people will hear a song thay says you will be there for each other when the world falls down and that is beautiful. Even those who are scoffing now will be full of awww on the day.

If this is what you and DP want- go for it.

FeelinSpendy · 08/12/2021 21:31

I love this and am sad I didn’t think of it for my first dance.
When I was younger, I always thought I’d get married in a dress like Sarah’s in this scene (sadly, my tastes had changed somewhat by the time I got married).

Exactly the point - It was your wedding, not anyone else’s.

DroopyClematis · 09/12/2021 07:23

Not sure about the lyrics but it's a nice tune.

Happyface120 · 09/12/2021 07:37

I love it, but my ultimate Bowie influenced wedding song would be Wild is the Wind
