Why do people think that its ok to comment on what your eating in the staffroom.
I was eating a tuna salad and someone asked me if i was eating dog food. How rude! Will eat in the car from now on. Fed up with everyone commenting at each others lunch. Back off!

YANBU. It's one of my pet hates. The constant evaluation of and commentary on what others eat. It's no one's business.

NeverChange · 08/12/2021 19:31

I think it's extremely rude for people to bring smelly food (eggs and fish) into a common area and inflict the stink of it on everyone else.

It's very inconsiderate.

WestendVBroadway · 08/12/2021 19:40

Ffs, it was just tuna so it smelt of fish not dog sh*t. Three people in my office, including me can't stand the smell of coffee; it makes me urge, but I don't expect it to be banned from the staff dining room.

@TuftyMarmoset

How is fruit smelly or vegetables slurpy Confused
I can smell banana, strawberries, oranges, lemons, limes, melon, pineapple and peach from a distance. And they can involve noise when it comes to apples, pears and suchlike.

Vegetables - well, if you have them crunchy, they offend people, and if you cook them, there's a possibility they're more of a slurpy texture - aubergine, courgette, peppers, etc, as they need a sauce.

Unless you're suggesting I eat approximately 150 calories of pureed steamed vegetables with no flavourings to go with a couple of spoonfuls of pureed fruit?

That's it, isn't it? This could be the solution - jars of baby food. Not the fancy, flavoured ones as they definitely have a smell, just the blandest GF/DF/sugarfree ones.

TuftyMarmoset · 08/12/2021 20:01

I think it may be your eating technique that’s the problem, not vegetables being cooked. And no they don’t need a sauce.

SobranieCocktail · 08/12/2021 20:15

@negligee yum... Don't suppose you could share the recipe for that?

Never had a problem with eating technique. I'm very good at getting food in me looks at waistline since I got over the ED caused by an abusive person criticising what I ate, how I ate it, how I held cutlery, how I sat, whether it was something they approved of or didn't like, etc.

Digesting technique, however - I'm definitely rubbish at that. And I don't really do well on eating plain vegetables all the time - there's not enough calories in them for a start.

Never mind, it's nice to know that people will be watching and judging everything I even think of putting into my mouth. Might even help me lose even more weight than I've already shed since being diagnosed - as it is, I hide away in my office rather than have people see me eat. I did try not eating at all at work, but they got a bit concerned when I passed out. Could try it again, though, I suppose. 204 calories in a protein shake is enough to do a whole day's work on, isn't it? I only do 12-17,000 steps a day these days, after all.

DickMabutt73962 · 08/12/2021 20:40

@Funkyslippers

I don't think tuna not heated smells, or boiled eggs. I've sat with colleagues eating all manner of stuff and the only offensive smells have come from smoked fish heated in the work's microwave 😡
Boiled eggs smell like a blocked drain.
Belledan1 · 08/12/2021 20:45

I dont miss the salt police lady. If i want some seasoning in my soup I will have it.

CharlotteRose90 · 08/12/2021 20:55

Cooked fish or eggs absolutely stinks out the room and is selfish to bring in. One of my colleagues is on a stupid diet and it’s all he brought in till management had a word. It was physically making people heave. He now eats in the canteen downstairs.

How do people cope in restaraunts with fish and eggs on the menu?

@dropitlikeitsloth

Benefits of WFH. I used to get passive agressive commments on my portions like ‘oooh is that all for you?’ and ‘you’re not eating again?’ 🙄 Yes, yes I am and what of it 🤣
I used to get this all the time. I found it hurtful and rude. I have quite a good appetite and my portions were larger than my colleagues. Got to the point where I would go home for lunch rather than have my eating habits discussed

Literally no one has said that Confused
All I said was that those foods aren’t slurpy or smelly…

Goldenbear · 08/12/2021 23:05

Tuna is pretty standard sandwich filling isn't it so I don't see why someone would comment. I have my own office so can eat what I want but it is an internal office with no windows. I came in to my office the other day to find a colleague had been let in there to so some filing and boxing up of stuff, she was using my computer and eating a hot curry. It made my whole office stink but I didn't say anything as in all honesty it wasn't so much the food more the fact that she had taken over my office.

Goldenbear · 08/12/2021 23:07

There is a staff room for her to eat in and I think she should have gone there to eat.

Oh God; I used to work with one of these. I had a salt cellar on my desk, and every time I used it he’d chime in with ‘You eat sooo much salt, you have salt on everything… don’t you know it’s really bad for you?’ Each and every time he said it, I’d point out that while excessive salt isn’t good for you, it is something natural that the body actually needs - unlike nicotine and tar. Yet that didn’t stop him going out for an hourly cigarette.

Given that it’s MN, they probably start ‘Shaking and crying’.
FestiveFruitloop · 09/12/2021 02:01

That would annoy me too. But then, it annoys me when people bang on about food, full stop. Food just isn't that interesting to me. And as for conversations about food at work... yaaaaaawn. One of the joys of WFH, for me, is the absence of 'Ooh, what are you having?'/'What have you got in your sandwiches?'/'I can't wait to eat my lunch'/'What did you have for your tea yesterday?'/'I've been such a naughty girl, I've already broken my diet'/'But you can't just skip lunch, you've got to have something!' and so on and on and on. Yaaawn.

Not that I've really thought about it much. Grin

immersivereader · 09/12/2021 02:02

Tuna isn't that bad

ClaudiaJ1 · 09/12/2021 02:54

Tuna is not really acceptable to take to work as lunch. It reeks and it's anti-social. Look at a lot of the sites that have lists of the 'most annoying work colleagues'/'most selfish work colleagues' and the tuna eater will always get a mention at least once.

It's considering a work faux pas.

Bogeyes · 09/12/2021 03:33

@SilverHairedCat

Fish should be banned in a workplace IMO. A colleague used to cook fish in the microwave at lunch. Selfish bastard. It stank the building out and the microwave made everything taste fishy.
Bastard

I agree, I don't understand all this it reeks etc!
NynaeveSedai · 09/12/2021 03:52

I guess if you like to eat tuna you must find the smell appetising?? If you don't like to eat it it smells like cat food. It's absolutely revolting. It smells worse than any other kind of fish I've ever smelt.

Nomorepinkcurtains · 09/12/2021 04:24

Well done on your weight loss op.

Don’t be put off, I wish I’d maintained my 2 stone loss.

Belledan1 · 09/12/2021 07:53

WomanStanleyWoman. Yes the woman that commented to me uses to smoke and drink loads.
