Do you always need strings to put baubles on the tree ?

Christmas tree novice here.

I recently visited my local garden centre and picked up some stunning baubles.

On inspection, they don't have any strings. So how do I attach them to my tree ? I have a real tree and each branch is quite thick, so it's difficult to shove them on without a string.

Last year I did my first tree and bought them on amazon. They all had strings on them. When I finished the tree, I must say, I didn't love that you could see the golf strings everywhere.

So I'm a bit torn and confused. Or am I missing something huge here ?

Thanks for your help!

You can buy plastic hooks in green or use invisible thread

Finfintytint · 08/12/2021 08:44

I use cotton thread in the same colour as the tree.

I use cotton from my sewing basket - I don't sew but do have a sewing basket with assorted colours of cotton Grin. Always have done!

I have little metal hooks. Same pack has lasted me 15 years.

It's going to take ages to put strings / hooks on each bauble !

You can also use paperclips with the long free end pulled out at an angle to make a hook.

gagababy · 08/12/2021 08:46

I think green is a good idea ! Thanks !

Metal hooks (like thick wire in an S shape) or repurpose paperclips as a PP suggested. Benefit over thread loops is that it's easier to place baubles further into the branch and not just on the tips.

I use hooks, they literally take a second to put on each bauble. This year I shouldn't have bothered though, bloody kitten Hmm

Thin ribbon, tied with an attractive bow or the proverbial knot in your tree's theme colour works too.

am I missing something huge here?

No, something fairly small – it's called a "reel of cotton".

(Do you need this much hand-holding in other areas of life?)

Redcrayons · 08/12/2021 08:59

I use the foil ribbons. Make a big loop and tie a knot at the top. You only have to do it once, next year they’re to go.

CrystalMaisie · 08/12/2021 08:59

Hooks much easier to get the baubles on and off, and as said upthread, you can position them further along the branch, and they don’t fall off when the tress droops.

Lindy2 · 08/12/2021 09:01

I use paper clips that I twist open to make a hook.

Why should 2 seconds adding a hook to each bauble just before you put it on the tree take any longer really than just putting them on the tree? How many have you got? 😂

I'm sure you can work out a solution that suits you best. I don't think it's that complex a problem.

Hooks won't take long at all. Which is why I got hooks and not strings. I have a very big tree this year !

I do. My husband needed to explain to me how to flush the toilet. Blush

At least when the hooks are on you can store the baubles with the hooks attached for next year.

I hope the tree looks good when it's done!

JustLikea · 08/12/2021 09:07

My baubles have thread 🧵 🪡 I've tied on.

Decorations, not baubles, I've bought in last couple of years have had strung attached just not the glass baubles.

I open out paper clips into a double hook shape, then after the tree comes down I bend them back into clips again. Not that I'm cheap at all.
