AIBU to not understand the outrage over the government’s so-called Christmas party?

OneRuleForThem · 07/12/2021 22:33

I feel like this is only an issue if people automatically followed guidelines like robots. We were “told” not to visit our own families over Christmas. Nobody tells me whether I can or can not visit my own family, so I did, and had a lovely and nice normal Christmas last year.

It seems people are up in arms over the fact that Downing Street allegedly (do I have to say allegedly?) had a Christmas party and flounced the “rules” without social distancing. My only reaction is…And? And so? So what? Did anyone expect the government NOT to do something like this? I don’t know why people are up in arms over it tbh. It’s not like this government is brand new to people and they didn’t have prior information that this government backtrack and “do as I say not as i do” ALL THE TIME.

I really don’t get why people are so outraged by this. My main reaction is…why did you listen to them in the first place expecting them to be some kind of moral leaders? AIBU?

So you didnt follow a law because you didnt agree with it, you wanted to prioritise your needs over it, and you cant understand why other people are upset when the government did the same?

Well I guess if we find out an MPs are paedophiles we stop prosecuting all paedophiles then, after all they are just not following a law they dont agree with because they are prioritising their own needs. And why be suprised, disapointed, annoyed, disgusted by any politicians who do the same right

LaBellaTrix · 08/12/2021 11:49

People with this attitude - the rules don't apply to me, so fuck you - should be deeply ashamed.

I have worked throughout the pandemic, wearing full PPE, looking after vulnerable and very unwell patients. I caught Covid (the Kent variant) last January, spent 4 weeks being seriously ill, and have been left with symptoms of Long Covid (now known as PASC).

Nevertheless I am still working and no, I don't want you or anyone else to tell me I'm a fucking NHS hero, I'm just doing a job that I love, and managing the symptoms as best I can. Go rattle your saucepans and clap for other keyworkers.

I've nursed patients who were receiving end of life care and their family were only allowed to visit for 15 minutes at a time, one at a time. Those were the rules my NHS Trust laid down, it may have been different elsewhere. It was heartbreaking.

So yes, OP, you are very very very unreasonable and I sincerely hope that you and your family don't fall foul of this potentially fatal virus.

OhDear2200 · 08/12/2021 11:49

@OneRuleForThem Boris is that you?

ringoutthebells · 08/12/2021 11:49

I agree with you to some extent OP but YABU to expect everyone else to be the same as you. We'd have still visited family as planned but the people we were visiting felt strongly about following the guidance so what could we do (turns out we actually had a lovely time and I'm now much more on board with Xmases at home, so there was that... Grin)

People also have nosy neighbours, and if your family live a long drive away it's pretty hard to hide the fact you're there overnights. Reporting friends and neighbours was rife last year.

OhGiveUp · 08/12/2021 11:50

I'm not going to criticise you for your actions OP because..

No mixing of households or you will be fined.....while we party on.

Two metres s.distancing....while I snog my secretaries face off.

You must stay indoors...while I drive to a castle to test my eyesight.

We've built and opened nightingale hospitals as we're afraid of the NHS being overwhelmed.....and closed them again unused.

We desperately need staff to give the jab....but not you retired nurse and doctor, you're not qualified to give a jab.

Last but not least, Boris laughingly saying ' I can't believe how quickly the population allowed me lock them down '. He might as well have finished that line with ' idiots '

And they're just the ones we know about!

I feel desperately sorry for anyone who has been put through the mill with losing loved ones while being kept apart from them, along with anyone else who've had their lives turned upside down due to lockdown.

TeeBee · 08/12/2021 11:53

Of course selfish people won't find fault in other selfish people. It kind of justifies their own selfishness, doesn't it?

Hillarious · 08/12/2021 11:54

The OP is just being provocative. I despair of people like the OP.

This issue is no longer about a party, but is about lies and cover up.

tallduckandhandsome · 08/12/2021 11:55

The reason you or your loved ones didn’t get COVID or die from it is because the rest of us kept you safe by following the rules.

Instead of a gleeful ‘haha suckers’ post, how about some gratefulness?

Intheopinionofourexpert · 08/12/2021 11:55

@SunnyLeaf

Hmm I think you’re on a wind up
Indeed. No one would be daft enough to express such wide eyed naivety surely.
SueSaid · 08/12/2021 11:56

'Why do we need more footage than Allegra Stanton having a practice press conference practicing for having to answer questions about the party?'

Her cringeworthy sniggering didn't tell me anything. If there was a party, there will be footage. Someone will leak it, where is it?

I want facts. Who was there, what happened, what did the PM know.

tallduckandhandsome · 08/12/2021 11:56

Or even gratitude!

GladAllOver · 08/12/2021 11:56

Exactly. OP you should be ashamed.

SmellyOldOwls · 08/12/2021 11:56

Half the country have cancelled their Christmas parties voluntarily this year because it's the right thing to do. When people are dying in their hundreds daily of a virus you try not to catch or transmit it, don't you? I really don't understand your attitude OP. It fucking stinks when you think of the suffering of people dying alone, unable to attend funerals, children being taken out of school and locked up for months on end.

The main thing that has irritated me though, and others I expect, is the sight of Allegra Strattons smirking face laughing at us. We are sick of being treated like our lives are expendable by a bunch of twisted selfish rich cunts.

They were practising for a leak and the reports coming out.
VikingOnTheFridge · 08/12/2021 11:59

There are two main groups who this is really hard for I think.

One, people who had no choice but to adhere to rules because they or a relative were in a setting where there was no other option. In the worst cases this is horrendous stuff like people dying alone, miscarrying, and similar level tragedies.

Two, people who didn't have to stick to the regulations but who chose to make sometimes considerable sacrifices because they believed it was for the best, and who are now angry because the parties illustrate how the people in charge, who imposed those rules, evidently didn't believe social distancing etc was necessary. False pretences etc. And sometimes these are devastating, so many last Christmases together missed.

You don't have to be in either group, and I'm not, to see why this would be a slap in the face to them.

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 08/12/2021 12:03

I sincerely hope that if OP is ever a victim of crime, that she doesn’t waste police time and resources in reporting it. Coz you know, laws are made to be broken and all that. Burglars are just going to burgle. Online fraudsters can just empty your bank accounts. That’s just life isn’t it?

SmellyOldOwls · 08/12/2021 12:03

'What I’m wondering is why it’s come out now, after all this time. What’s it really covering up?'

I think it's to stop people calling for another lockdown. BJ doesn't want to cancel Christmas twice, but he knows he should. But he can get away with doing it if there's no public appetite for it. Barnard Castle killed off that lockdown, loads of people said fuck this for a laugh I'm not staying in if DC isn't. Similarly now lots and lots of comments saying 'why should I stick to restrictions if the government don't.' No lockdown for us, BJ is the great hero who allowed us to have Christmas (don't forget he 'didn't' attend the party) deal with the consequences in January...let the bodies pile high.

SammyScrounge · 08/12/2021 12:07

@PamDenick

Bigger issues? Such as getting puppies out of Afghanistan and abandoning women and children? Yup. We should all be shrieking. And then shriek some more...
Are you conflating a bit of cheese and wine with puppies being rescued instead of people? You lack a sense of proporrtion then. I'd have said the abandonment of the Afghans was a big issue, the cheese and wine a trivial one.
Runaway1 · 08/12/2021 12:07

Hi Allegra, just to explain it you, it's because government brought death and misery to the whole country and felt happy making those decisions because they were unaffected by them. Their lives carried on, all the while laughing at those of us who are not above the totally arbitrary laws they made.

VikingOnTheFridge · 08/12/2021 12:09

I think the lying about both is very significant sammyscrounge.

Theluggage15 · 08/12/2021 12:10

You know if you want to cancel your Christmas you’re very welcome to Smelly. And it’s pissing me off the way the Afghan matter has been completely sidelined and they are going to completely get away with it.

What a stupid response.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 08/12/2021 12:25

My grandad died alone in a care home because we couldn't break the rules to see him. We were dobbed in by neighbours when we tried to have an informal wake for him at my mams house (about 4 households mixing) and the police attended.

My mam has just lost her dad in awful circumstances and couldn't even spend time with her sisters or children for comfort.

All because we aren't rich or powerful enough for the rules not to apply to us

Fucking hell, really? What a bunch of arseholes. I'd have made sure they suffered for that.
TiddlesTheTiger · 08/12/2021 12:32

@OneRuleForThem

I just feel like people are angry because they feel personally cheated out of a Christmas last year when the people setting the rules had a nice one and my only response is…WHY did you listen to them expecting moral high ground from the government, and Boris Johnson, of all people!
Because it wasn't only the UK government telling us stuff. Covid was happening worldwide and governments were doing their best to deal with it and protect people - we believed.

Then it turns out that our own Government was sneering at us.

But you were as selfish as them, so it's not surprising that you don't care.
