Cheap brother-in-law?

learieonthewildmoor · 07/12/2021 11:40

My bil got me in the family Christmas draw. We have a £50 limit. He just texted me asking me to pay the postage on my present because it goes £15 over the limit.
Next year do I ask for a £35 present to account for possible postage and wrapping?

Is he being cheap?

Given the update, I've switched to YABU!

sweeneytoddsrazor · 07/12/2021 12:44

Last week I was going to send an advent calendar. Next day signed for would have cost £12 according to the p.o. Needless to say I sent it normal 1st class which still cost £3 something

Wannakisstheteacher · 07/12/2021 12:45

That’s so cheeky!!! I can’t believe you asked for something right up to the budget knowing it would then cost more to post. Bloody Hell, talk about fleecing it for every penny.

mrsm43s · 07/12/2021 12:52

You've asked for something that totals £15 over budget. Of course you should pay the extra!

You are so rude and cheeky! I can't believe you are suggesting that your BIL is tight, because he doesn't want to spend an additional £15 on you!

Next time, ask for something that comes in at under the budget!

FrenchBoule · 07/12/2021 12:55

Do you live in Highlands and Islands OP? Anything up Perth is apparently not mainland UK 😀

AndTime · 07/12/2021 13:28

I think you should pay but I would ask him to send it standard shipping unless you have chosen a gift from overseas?

user1471457751 · 07/12/2021 13:34

I had to change my vote after your update. Of course yabu. Maybe ask him if there's a cheaper postage option and say you would be happy to wait. But its not fair to expect him to cover postage costs when you asked for a gift that takes up the full budget.

BlusteringBoobies · 07/12/2021 13:44

I also think YABVVVVU to call your BIL 'cheap' for not wanting to pay £65 for a gift you've asked for when the budget was £50

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 07/12/2021 13:48

Update changes it entirely!

babybunny123 · 07/12/2021 14:04

tell him to get a refund and send you a £50 gift card or cheque.

DraigFach · 07/12/2021 14:05

YABU you specified a gift that was up to the maximum budget and clearly isn't cheap to ship.

Your BIL isn't being cheap, you're being unfair.

Scoobygang7 · 07/12/2021 15:45

Even my 6 year old knows that when he wants something he has to remember postage costs. Yes I am that mean but I do it so as he's prepared later in life to know the full extent of the price of things.

Yabu

tallduckandhandsome · 07/12/2021 15:59

Tell him to transfer the £15 to you and you’ll pay the postage.

UsernameInTheTown · 07/12/2021 16:01

YABVU and a CF to boot.

tallduckandhandsome · 07/12/2021 16:04

Why is he getting express shipping?

Most places offer free shipping with £50 purchase.

thevassal · 07/12/2021 16:06

What a drip feed....unless it was at one stage possible to buy it with free postage (e.g. you told him in plenty of time to get it from shop a while h does free delivery) but he left it so late he has to pay for express shipping then YABU.

If he was asking for 2 quid he would be tight. But 15 quid is nearly a third again the cost of the present!

thevassal · 07/12/2021 16:07

Refuse to give him the money but say you don't mind him paying just normal shipping and its fine if the present gets to you a few days late?

CrimbleCrumble1 · 07/12/2021 16:08

YABU

learieonthewildmoor · 07/12/2021 17:10

Okay.

No-one in the family draw gets a present less than £50. I have always paid the extra when someone wants something a few pound over the limit.
Next year, I’ll factor in postage.

You’re coming across like a bit of a tool.

So is there a £50 limit or not?

£15 isn’t a few pounds.

Cheerbear24 · 07/12/2021 18:15

I’m afraid I think you are the CF in this situation OP!

Presumably most people buy it from a shop and you've sent him something niche to buy for you?
Imdreamingofapeacefulxmas · 07/12/2021 18:20

Oh gosh I hate this way of doing present I really do!!
What's the point??.
It's like extremely wealthy gp sending the gift second class!! And it arrives late and they are the only living gp
