To think something awful is about to happen

Garysmum · 05/12/2021 21:37

For about a week now I have had an impending sense of doom. Sounds silly doesn't it? But it's a really deep feeling, something in the pit of the stomach that has been intensifying.
I have had these strange feelings before and had that sense when someone was about to die. (And I've read many a post on here when people have mentioned this too.) It works the other way for me too, I have been seriously ill twice and had the sense I was going to be fine against the odds.
This time, something tells me its something tragic to do with me or one of the DC (less likely the ex). It's been intensifying all week. There have been lots of strange signs. I know I must sound off my rocker but these things have been out of place and I haven't been looking for them, hoping for the opposite in fact.
I am so frightened and I have never been before when I have had one of these senses. It's making me feel very unwell. And no I haven't changed any medication recently.
I neither want to see anything happen to the DC or ex, nor do I want to die a long drawn out death from covid (I am CV) or anything else. It's making me think about ending my life. Rationally that's ridiculous.
AIBU or YANBU you have these strong senses too.

You mentioned no change in medication but then you say you had a checkup for a pill change? Could that be responsible?

thickthighs73 · 05/12/2021 22:10

I have this I’d say 4 out of 7 days, damn anxiety

HelplesslyHoping · 05/12/2021 22:13

Just in case you're wondering, I've spoken to my GP when I had the impending doom feeling. She was more than happy to see me, ask questions and do some basic check ups. They will take you seriously, even if they just think it's anxiety.

Garysmum · 05/12/2021 22:13

@MoiraNotRuby

Definitely talk to GP. Can I ask a few obvious things, are you eating regularly, are you sleeping enough/not too much, also do you have a carbon monoxide detector? You do sound off balance and I think your body is trying to tell you something, but it won't necessarily be something major iyswim.

Deep breaths and take it steady, I don't think you are off your rocker as you put it.

Sleeping and eating fine (other than comfort eating sweets but BMI normal). I have a chronic health issue and that's not going too well. I am deeply fatigued and stressed with work. I've had less than 2 weeks holiday in 2021. It's been like that for years though. Carbon monoxide alarm I think as I am in rented.

That's helpful thank you. As a pp said the thought of phoning the receptionist to ask an appointment for this - well that's actually made me laugh.

I don't know. I have been on a progestrone pill and it's made me super tearful. I think the last time I was on it (probably about 20 years ago) something similar happened but it's hard to remember exactly. I changed pill (still waiting for prescription) as I have been having menopausal symptoms like hot flushes and the GP thought I needed estrogen as well.

It probably helps a lot to tell yourself that it’s not anything physic, it is anxiety and stress. It sounds like you might need some time off and a big sleep

Chewbecca · 05/12/2021 22:20

I’ve had this before. I think it’s protecting / preparing yourself.

Nothing awful has ever happened after my doomsday feelings!

ElfontheShelfisLookingatYou · 05/12/2021 22:21

Op I have had thus as well its so odd.
Don't self for fill this feeling though. What will be will be
All you can do is call gp.
As hard as our lives can be, we are still doing well in a western country.
Whatever happen pr doesn't, we do have a safety net

Keeping busy is also crucial.

Alcemeg · 05/12/2021 22:21

I think we are living in strange times at the moment, and a sense of impending doom is kind of inevitable. I am not usually given to gloomy introspection but have been finding it a bit of a struggle at time over the past year or so, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. We are surrounded on all sides by relentless anxiety about health and the threat of imminent crisis. It's bound to affect the way we think and feel.

Chewbecca · 05/12/2021 22:22

(I haven’t had it since I have been on HRT either btw)

OtherPlans · 05/12/2021 22:23

Yes check your carbon monoxide alarm!

northwesternskies · 05/12/2021 22:27

I have experienced 'bad feelings' in the run up to certain events in my life. The week my grandad died unexpectedly, I just knew something was going to happen involving my grandparents and I couldn't put my finger on the feeling. I was due to see them on the Saturday and I remember on the Friday evening feeling relieved that we'd made it to the weekend and everything was fine and then we got the phone call.
With my second pregnancy which resulted in a loss at 19 weeks, I also had a bad feeling throughout and just could never bring myself to get excited or want to tell anyone.
I do think sometimes we almost have a sixth sense about certain things but if it's at a point where it's controlling your life and affecting your health, I think there's a chance that it could be something more and you should speak to your GP

userxx · 05/12/2021 22:27

That's how my anxiety started, sense of impeding doom.

EvilEdna1 · 05/12/2021 22:27

This can definitely be hormonal. HRT stopped it for me too.

RubyTuesday70 · 05/12/2021 22:29

I had this, for nearly a week. It was so bad driving home from work one night that I had to pull the car over and I sobbed uncontrollably. Saw GP who was very dismissive......... ended up in hospital days later and was seriously unwell. It was a really horrid feeling.

PinkSyCo · 05/12/2021 22:31

I had this feeling 15 years ago. It was really awful and made me feel absolutely sick with anxiety. After about 3 days I went to my doctor, who promptly put me on antidepressants. A few days later my brother hung himself. Coincidence? Perhaps, who knows?

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 05/12/2021 22:34

I’ve had this a few times and.... nothing happened! It’s a symptom of anxiety for me. It’s very upsetting at the time though.

disconnected101 · 05/12/2021 22:37

A lot of the things that sprung to mind have already been mentioned - cardiac issues, carbon monoxide, hormonal imbalance. Definitely a sound reason to go see your GP.

Is there any mould in your house that you're aware of?

Have you ever had seizures?

So sorry to hear this. Do you think you were picking up cues from him, his behaviour, language etc.?
DanielRicciardosSmile · 05/12/2021 22:42

Have you been drinking more coffee than usual? Caffeine can cause feelings of impending doom, I know from previous experience.

Oh no. I am so sorry. Weirdly it’s been my eldest Dc I am really anxious about the one who hung themselves and nearly died just pre pandemic

House is very damp. No mould in place as I clean it off the walls regularly but is always coming back.

I get this when I have a bad depressive episode. It can be really scary. Touch wood,so far nothing’s happened. Hope you’re ok

candycane222 · 05/12/2021 22:51

I had something similar once - it was my subconscious trying (and failing!) to alert me to something that someone had warned me about. I had disregarded the warning/chosen not to believe them/decided the odds were low, and I was stubbornly pressing on regardless, as I was doing something I really wanted to do.

Actually, the warning was valid and a bad thing happened to me (not catastrophic, but certainly unpleasant and unnecessary). I am pretty sure part of me knew that, hence the feeling of impending doom.

Strange though it sounds, I'm not actually sure I could or even should have done anything differently though. I guess I was just determined to have my adventure regardless - and all in all, don't really regret it.

But maybe you have something at the back of your mind that you have dismissed, but that it would be worth paying attention to?
