To ask how many after school activities do your kids do and how much do they cost?

Just that really. My DC is in reception and already most of his class have classes after school/at the weekend (gymnastics, football, music, ballet etc.)

Covid stopped classes for ages so it sort if went from my mind and I've not put DC in any classes yet, but just hoping to get an idea about what sort of classes kids do, how many different classes, how often, and costs per week per child?

Thanks

To hate that so many sports are so expensive? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/4417617-To-hate-that-so-many-sports-are-so-expensive

My nieces are 5 (Y1) and do swimming which is £34 a month each for 2x 30min lessons a week. They only do two as they are petrified of water and pretty much cry the first lesson so just stay in the pool for the next one when they finally start swimming a bit.

In my experience it gets a bit silly and over the top in y2-3 with some even doing two clubs a night, but kids start dropping things towards the end of y5. Its a miracle if they're still in a club by the time they're in y9.

RestingPandaFace · 04/12/2021 22:14

Rugby £2 per week
Swimming £22 per month
Music club £4 per week

BettyOBarley · 04/12/2021 22:17

DD (8) does swimming £23 a month and brownies £35 a term. Plus cooking club after school £3 a week. She did do gymnastics which was £5 a week but never restarted after covid.
Reception age DS doesn't do anything yet, he's got no interest. I really don't think there's any rush, just let them tell you when they are interested in something.

My DS8 does 4 sessions per week of one activity, with 2 of those on a Saturday. It costs £75 per month. It's a lot but he loves it and is hoping to go to try competing.

He also does swimming lesson which costs £17 pm, and cubs which is about £15 per month I think

RevolvingPivot · 04/12/2021 22:20

Mine don't do anything 😟

DeepaBeesKit · 04/12/2021 22:22

Tennis on a Saturday, half hour lesson, about £7.

Swimming after school, half hour lesson, £9.

Planning to start piano lessons but waiting another term.

HeatingOnHeatingOff · 04/12/2021 22:27

I have dd 9 and ds 4.

Ds has swimming once a week (£29 per half hour lesson)

Dd has gymnastics at £11 a week
Trampolining at £7 a week
Drama at £8 a week (she has only recently given this up)
Violin lessons £7 a week (during school time)

BlueSoul · 04/12/2021 22:32

My DS is in Reception and he has a private swimming lesson once a week. I intend to take him to play football or rugby on a weekend at some point but at the moment he is just shattered from school.

CuddlyDudley · 04/12/2021 22:32

For past two years we have dance which is £2 a week but can cost £20+ every other week during competition season. First half term of this year we had football at £3 a week.

Blanketpolicy · 04/12/2021 22:32

When younger ds did (as well as swimming lessons)

Football was £20/month for 2 nights training/1 match at weekend.

Karate £4.50 a session, payg. 1-2 sessions a week + annual registration which wasnt much.. He got to green belt before he stopped, but it was more for fitness and he never did competitions.

Some activities can get very expensive as they get older and want to do more so choose carefully what you let them do!

Burnt0utMum · 04/12/2021 22:33

DD (7) does:
Swimming £18.90 per month
Jujitsu £25 per month
Gymnastics £24 per month
Brownies £2 per week plus 20p for sweets
Violin - free through school

DS (5) does:
Swimming £18.90 per month
Jujitsu £25 per month
Gymnastics £24 per month
He wants to do football but we can't find a time we can make

sofiathe2nd · 04/12/2021 22:33

DD Yr2 does:

Football club, free
Gardening club, free
Circus: £6 a week plus uniform
Swimming: £10 a wee
Horse riding: £27 a week but from bday/Xmas money
Recorders: £70 a term

We've agreed she'll drop 2 things next term as she finds it exhausting and we're missing out on family time

DementedPanda · 04/12/2021 22:36

2 dc, used to do martial arts at 40 a month each plus extra for belts, equipment etc, swimming was 22 a month each. Now they are older the 10 year old plays football for a club, monthly subs are £22 but that includes his kit and FA registration, training, matches etc. The oldest 11 year old does wrestling at £8 per week .

Sprogonthetyne · 04/12/2021 22:39

DS (reception) dose a music club at a concert hall/ music centre type place on a Saturday, which is free as we got a bursary. He's on the waiting list to start swimming, but it could take another year as there's a backlog from covid.

Not an official club, but we also do a weekly meet up in softplay, which is £3 each for him an toddler DD.

MyCatHatesWhiskas · 04/12/2021 22:43

Your activities are so much cheaper than ours! We are in a rather moneyed area of SE England.

DC1 does gymnastics and swimming. Gymnastics is £40ish a month for a weekly 45 minute class. Swimming is paid termly and works out at about £11 for a 30 minute lesson. To be fair, it’s a small private pool and a ratio of one instructor to four kids, so it is pricier than the local leisure centre but DC1 was very nervous about swimming and had zero water confidence.

RandomUsernameHere · 04/12/2021 22:46

DD (Yr3):
Art club
Swimming
Gymnastics
Football
Tennis

DS (Yr 3):
Football x 2
Swimming
Gymnastics
Tennis

Some are at the weekends, not all after school. Think most of the activities are around £100 per term per child, tennis is a bit more. Art club and one of the football sessions are free as included with school.

JaninaDuszejko · 04/12/2021 22:47

At that age DD1 and DD2 did Rainbows, swimming and football (an after school club at school that was basically cheap childcare until 6pm). At 14 DD1 does football (2 days a week) and swimming club (4 days a week). At 12 DD2 does running club (once a week), swimming club (2 days a week) and plays two instruments and in the town orchestra. But their (state) school does tons of stuff before and after school so at least one of them does each of the following (school clubs are free so they can do whatever they want): swimming, football, rugby, hockey, school newspaper, calligraphy, orchestra, art club, photography.

DS is 9 and has been affected by the pandemic. He swims but we need to sign him up for some more things now. I think it's one of those things that marks out someone's class, the number of opportunities they are offered as a child. It's much easier to start these things as a child. But some kids love it much more than others, DD1 signed up for pretty much everything when she started secondary school, DD2 took more encouragement (pandemic didn't help), DS's best friend does something every night but his brother does less. DS is quite shy about doing new things and likes to know a friend is doing it.

Do what works for you and don't worry too much about the superscheduled kids. Some thrive on it, some hate it.

Ricepops · 04/12/2021 22:49

DS(7) Y3:
Swimming lesson £15 per week (1:3 ratio in lesson)
Beavers £34/term
Spanish £65/term
After school football £40/term

DD(4) nursery:
Gymnastics £17.50/week (Little Gym)

Yes the swimming lessons and gymnastics are expensive, but we've tried a few swimming lessons in particular and this is far and away the best. Little Gym is new for us, but loving it so far (except the cost!).
