To be furious with my manager

I'm NHS and like most hospitals our department is struggling with staffing levels and recruitment.
Yesterday during a procedure, patient on the table, all of us standing within three feet of each other, the Consultant, who has been taking an active part in the future planning, asked my manager how things were going.

The conversation went like this:

"So when's T starting?"
"Not...problems..."
"Well you've got X doing bank?"
Nod
"And Y doing more hours?"
Nod
"And you'll be training up 'keen new person' and 'Invisible person'?"
"Yes"

I'm fuming. I know full well what extra training is planned and I'm not happy for good reasons. But I'm really furious because clearly this discussion has been going on for a little while with no mention to me, and then they had this conversation right there as if I didn't exist.

(Or the patient, whose hand I was holding whilst offering reassurance).

But this is about ME. And I'm bloody cross and offended. AIBU?

@Bluntness100. Et al…

Just check the user name-is clear OP feels invisible in this situation

I'm totally confused, even with your updates.

So there was prior talk of you getting training? And then the conversation in your OP took place, which included mention of your training, as well as some other people. But you already knew about the training, so what is the problem? It sounds as if the consultant and manager were just checking that they had the rota covered.

Read edwinbear post from 22.18, she explains it.

Oh I don't understand a word but I'm just going to say you are completely right to be annoyed. All of the others are idiots. Especially P.

There’s probably some loophole in your contract that talks about the ‘needs of the service’ or similar. There always is. Just as how being employed by the ‘hospital’ or the ‘children hospital’ enables staff to be moved or redeployed wherever they’re needed.

pastabest · 03/12/2021 23:34

@Pallisers

Could you not have said "Gosh I'm right here and this is the first I've heard of it - looking forward to chatting properly later"?

I appreciate you were taken by surprise - and talking about people in front of them as if they aren't there (and managerial functions nothing to do with other people in the room) is highly inappropriate.

The NHS is very hierarchical still and this would not be the done thing in many settings.

And I also think lots staff are becoming invisible/faceless due to the prevalence of masks.

Bideyinn · 03/12/2021 23:37

That’s shit. You are right to be pissed off about it

CheshireChat · 03/12/2021 23:57

What sorta weirdo doesn't acknowledge that the person you're talking about is right there? Not to mention the poor patient.

You not wanting to do the training reminds me of a family friend who is a police officer and deliberately flunked an exam so he wouldn't have to go on patrol on his own. Rightly so as well.

SeasonFinale · 04/12/2021 00:03

Surely you should be happy that you will be getting the training you need? I can't seee why you would be fuming at all.

oviraptor21 · 04/12/2021 00:42

Because she doesn't want to do the work that the training would enable her to do because it sounds like she will be taken advantage of even more than she is currently.

yes I know somebody who declined an acting up position in the police (a good one too) because they wanted them to go into it without the appropriate training...and it was operational issues, not admin. They stuck to their guns and got the necessary training and support.

Appalling that this was said in front of a patient. Where’s the bedside manner

LakieLady · 04/12/2021 09:00

It's shit, and it's incredibily rude of them to talk about you as though you're not even there.

Shows how little they appreciate staff imo.
