AIBU to think some people are so inconsiderate

Today I was shopping in a local supermarket and there was woman walking around every aisle and coughing non stop, she was not wearing a mask, nor did she have a lanyard, but what irked me even more was that she didn’t make much of an effort to even cover her mouth whilst coughing.

Then when we were queuing to pay, she turned up behind me( I was scooting as fast I could around the shop to avoid her) and started to chat to the lone unmasked cashier across from our cashier saying”I see your smile, well done for not bowing down to the government like sheep, when we all have natural immunity”!! All said whilst coughing some more 😩 fully aware that there are tons of us around all masked up!

Then proceeding to chat to all and sundry around her. The worst part was she seemed so well spoken and articulate which seemed to clash entirely with her inconsiderate behaviour.

Aibu to feel like this woman was out of order?!

And then everyone stood up and clapped?

ThreeWiseBuddhas · 02/12/2021 13:57

Oh you snobby fucker you are funny 🤣🤣🤣
@RuggerHug I said she should be wearing a mask. It’s the law and even more so if she has a cough.

But people who have viral coughs still need to go about their life. But they should be wearing a mask and coughing into that.
Cough etiquette has been around long before Covid! There is no excuse

FOJN · 02/12/2021 14:01

"I see your smile, well done for not bowing down to the government like sheep, when we all have natural immunity"

It's this which would annoy me more than anything, clearly she's not wearing a mask to prove a point rather than because she's exempt and then using the check out to broadcast her ill informed views. Leave it on twitter, I'm not interested in hearing that rubbish when I'm doing my shopping.

MrsDoubtfire2018 · 02/12/2021 14:21

Sorry I did not mean to offend anybody with her being articulate comment. I was just surprised that’s all. This did happen this morning in a supermarket. No it’s not from a film 😄

MrsDoubtfire2018 · 02/12/2021 14:22

I understand completely about viral coughs being asthmatic myself, but continuously coughing everywhere and not even attempting to cover your mouth in a shop with no ventilation is very inconsiderate and then to make comments like that was totally unnecessary

MrsDoubtfire2018 · 02/12/2021 14:23

No new notice or security at the door

MrsDoubtfire2018 · 02/12/2021 14:24

This was really annoying to have to listen to . I’m not on Twitter otherwise I would have

The loudest people I know about all of this are well spoken articulate people

MrsDoubtfire2018 · 02/12/2021 14:26

I suppose. It just seemed bizarre , provocative behaviour

OP posts:
5keletor · 02/12/2021 14:26

Being well-spoken and articulate doesn't mean she's incapable of lacking the common sense to make her an anti-maker, but yes, her behaviour sounds embarrassing and completely inconsiderate.

Skyll · 02/12/2021 14:26

You were very very rude.

I’m working class and not well spoken. I suppose I’m articulate but who knows.

You’d no need to say that. It was horrible.

She may have a reason not to wear a mask. I’m exempt and I have a cough. I can’t always cough into my sleeve or a tissue if I’m using my crutches but I do not cough into peoples faces and a social distance

I don’t always wear a lanyard as I dislike the idea that I have to wear a visible indicator of my disability status - aren’t my crutches enough?

MrsDoubtfire2018 · 02/12/2021 14:27

I suppose so

OP posts:
Skyll · 02/12/2021 14:28

And I social distance. Sorry.

MrsDoubtfire2018 · 02/12/2021 14:28

I am working class too and didn’t mean to be rude, I was just surprised that she chose to cough throughout her shopping without trying to cover her mouth and then said this at the checkout

OP posts:
arethereanyleftatall · 02/12/2021 14:30

So she was rude, and then you were rude on here. You're evens today now.

Skyll · 02/12/2021 14:35

Coughing isn’t a choice.

Anyway. Her social class has nothing to do with it.

MadgeMak · 02/12/2021 14:38

@Redcart21

Is this the issue she wasn’t wearing a mask? She should be wearing a mask. But YABU if the complaint is about her coughing. Some people have viral illnesses which aren’t Covid but still need to do their shopping
I've got a cough/cold at the moment, not Covid as I've been tested, but I absolutely wear a mask. Not just because it's mandatory, but also out of courtesy to my fellow shoppers who might feel reassured that I'm wearing a mask when they hear me coughing. Coughing is fine. Coughing unmasked is not fine.
Fomofo · 02/12/2021 14:39

She didn't have crutches though, so not really a comparable scenario? And I love the extra details about accent etc, but she does sound like a twerp

Innocenta · 02/12/2021 14:43

@fakereview Coughing isn't a reason to not wear a mask. This is a common misconception.

MrsDoubtfire2018 · 02/12/2021 14:48

Thank you for wearing a mask. I don’t blame her for coughing, nobody can help that but she didn’t try to cover her mouth at all and it was continuous

OP posts:
MrsDoubtfire2018 · 02/12/2021 14:48

Sorry I did not intend to be rude to anyone

OP posts:
MrsDoubtfire2018 · 02/12/2021 14:49

I know coughing isn’t a choice but wearing a mask is and so is choosing to cover your mouth when you are unable to stop coughing whilst indoors amongst lots of other people

OP posts:
MrsDoubtfire2018 · 02/12/2021 14:50

She definitely did not have crutches, she was walking very well with her shopping all around the store

OP posts:
Userguaranteed · 02/12/2021 14:55

Alright, OP. Speaking personally, I've taken your apology on board and I believe you.

I agree with you she sounds inconsiderate, coughing all over the place without trying to contain herself or cover her mouth (mask or not).

But more than that, I think her comment was very strange. Not because she believes it (it's up to her) but because she automatically thought a cashier not wearing a mask must be because she thinks that way too and not because she's possibly exempt or forgot to wear one. It makes me wonder where she landed from. Grin
