Three 'beauty' advent calendars for a grown woman?

I've just seen someone posting that she's got three beauty advent calendars to open this year.

When did this become a thing? Surely it's wasteful, expensive and completely unnecessary?

Call me Scrooge Blush

I have 2 Smile

royco · 02/12/2021 08:36

Explain why? Which ones? What's the appeal?

The expense isn’t any of your concern, it’s not your money. The ‘necessity’ is nothing to do with you really either, I imagine we all have things that aren’t ‘necessary’. Wasteful… yes, the packaging is an issue.

SarahBellam · 02/12/2021 08:38

That’s 3 people telling her she’s ugly and needs to fix herself 😂

HardbackWriter · 02/12/2021 08:40

What I don't get about them is people excitedly declaring that 'they have products that would usually cost £500 in them but they're only £100' (obviously not exact figures!) - doesn't that just reveal how badly the company rip you off all year round?

RunRunGingerbreadMan · 02/12/2021 08:41

If you use the things inside I'm not sure how it's wasteful. I went onto Boots to buy the mascara and make up I usually use and realised that the No7 calendar contained all the things I wanted in the same size as usual and more for a lower overall price. Therefore I've actually saved money by going for the calendar and I'll get a few extras too. You could say anything is wasteful really, we all have different interests that others may not share or choose to spend money on.

icedcoffees · 02/12/2021 08:42

How is it wasteful if the products are going to be used?

CSJobseeker · 02/12/2021 08:43

It's the waste that gets me with these things. Masses if packaging for lots of small items. And invariably, several of the items won't be things I want.

I'd rather just buy myself some treats to have during December.

colourfulpuddles · 02/12/2021 08:43

How is it wasteful or unnecessary if the person who has them is enjoying using them?

Or are we not allowed to like and have nice things?

Fairyliz · 02/12/2021 08:44

But doesn’t everyone have a ‘thing’ they spend lots of money on? It only matters if you are spending money you don’t have.
For example my friend drives 5 miles past Aldi to go to Sainsbury’s. It must cost her an extra £30 per week but she says she likes Sainsbury’s.

CSJobseeker · 02/12/2021 08:44

The sizes are tiny, so the ratio of packaging to product is significantly worse than with a larger item.

Very true!
MindyStClaire · 02/12/2021 08:46

She finds different things interesting and enjoyable to you. So what.

SexyNeckbeard · 02/12/2021 08:47

The thing about being an adult is that you can do whatever you want and whatever makes you happy. Did you not get a decent advent calandar this year? Are you jealous?

icedcoffees · 02/12/2021 08:47

The sizes are tiny, so the ratio of packaging to product is significantly worse than with a larger item.

But if she was bought a full sized item she hated, the entire product would be going in the bin too. Nobody's going to want your opened and used cosmetics, lol.

LoveComesQuickly · 02/12/2021 08:47

I agree with you OP. I know it's her business not mine etc etc but I find this kind of display of consumerism awful.

BarbaraofSeville · 02/12/2021 08:49

I suppose if you're going to use the products, you decide whether it's worth it to you. M&S was doing one that you paid around £30 for if you bought clothes, some of the products were full size, or travel size at least, and a lot of those items cost £10-20 each.

I can't bring myself to conden them despite having no interest in one myself. However a hand dyed yarn advent is a whole other story and I would love one. I mean really really love one. Maybe soon. 🧶

PerditaNitt · 02/12/2021 08:54

Three seems a bit OTT (can understand someone treating themselves to one). The growth of adult advent calendars demonstrates the power of consumerism - something which we never before wanted or needed is suddenly a “must have”. Perhaps I’m a bit of a Scrooge….Smile

Agree with PPs that adults can do what they want and spend money as the wish, but no harm stopping and asking ourselves if this is really what we want, or what we have been told (by social media, mumsnet forums, magazine articles) that we want…

knittingaddict · 02/12/2021 08:54

Condemn

The packaging is wasteful and there are bound to be things in them you don’t t use, that’s wasteful too, IMO.

Bigassbeebuzzbuzz · 02/12/2021 08:54

I wondered this yesterday when everyone posted their families advent calendars on Facebook. My dc must feel hard done by because they only got 1 £2 chocolate advent calendar each. Some dc had 5 advent calendars!
Personally I wouldn't have one (maybe a chocolate one) but if that's what people want to buy it's got nothing to do with me.
