Three 'beauty' advent calendars for a grown woman?

274 replies

royco · 02/12/2021 08:34

I've just seen someone posting that she's got three beauty advent calendars to open this year.

When did this become a thing? Surely it's wasteful, expensive and completely unnecessary?

Call me Scrooge Blush

FWIW, my parents gave me one last year with tea.
I enjoy tea and enjoyed ‘discovering’ a new tea each day. And I went to buy some tea with them in January. Only to be quite quite disappointed with it so I stopped 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

But … it worked…

This year, they did the same thing with another brand and so far it’s crap… because actually some of them are just there for show (nice box etc…) and have crap in them too. Basic rip off.

Malibuismysecrethome · 02/12/2021 09:19

I must be odd but I don’t like using masses of products on my skin, especially my face. I do react badly sometimes so I tend to use my trusted products. So these advent calendars are not for me.

Intheopinionofourexpert · 02/12/2021 09:21

@icedcoffees

How is it wasteful if the products are going to be used?
Tiny bottles, tubes etc=more packaging. That's why it's wasteful.
toconclude · 02/12/2021 09:22

@SexyNeckbeard

The thing about being an adult is that you can do whatever you want and whatever makes you happy. Did you not get a decent advent calandar this year? Are you jealous?
Ofgs. Always the ' just jealous' poster. Yes, if I think it's crazy I'm just jealous. Never mind that in my case all those products would bring me out in a rash that would take weeks to clear. No-one can criticise anything except through jealousy.🙄🙄🙄🙄
wavingwhilstdrowning · 02/12/2021 09:22

Things traditionally for women - beauty, bags, nails etc are all ridiculed as unnecessary and flippant and a waste. It is misogyny. It's no more of a waste that items men buy. I remember once my dad ridiculing DM's silly 'lotions and potions' whilst carefully organising his hundreds of mad expensive fishing lures and floats. Even at 10 the hypocrisy wasn't lost on me.

PerfectlyUnsuitable · 02/12/2021 09:23

@festivefuschias

If the products get used then what’s the issue? I have two and they both include full sized products that I use anyway, so it was a cheaper way of getting those with some new products to try. I don’t post about them on social media though.

Beauty products are my thing. Clothes and shoes aren’t; I only buy clothes and shoes when I actually need them, so if a jumper gets a hole that’s behind repair then I’ll replace it and I have clothes that are many years old. I think fast fashion is far more wasteful.

Because actually there is no way to know if the person is going to use them.

The product might be crap or nit to the taste of the person. It seems my tea advent calendar will go in the bin because if that.
It might just not be the taste of the person.
And the person might well already have plenty of said product or at least some of them.

It’s basic consumerism.

And yes it might be enjoyable. But the bottom line is that it might also not be iyswim, esp when you have 3 of the same.

Popcornriver · 02/12/2021 09:23

I mean I see your point about the environmental impact. Especially considering most are made up of both cardboard and plastic. Saying that though, how much difference is it going to make when year round we're buying so much one use plastic in the supermarkets? We should start there if we're serious about waste.

But you're welcome to judge my house OP because I've even bought the dog her own advent calendar Blush

@ThePoisonousMushroom

I actually love the idea of someone sat with their pursed lips judging while I merrily consume the gin that came in my advent calendar. Makes it taste all the sweeter!
At 9.00am?
furbabymama87 · 02/12/2021 09:24

I've never been interested in them. To me there's no point in having loads of all sized products that I didn't pick myself. But we're all different and some people will like them. Why does anyone like anything?

godmum56 · 02/12/2021 09:25

@TheMirrorReflects

Scrooge
hahahaha yes
slaybell · 02/12/2021 09:25

I get them every year as a gift from my MIL.

I love them personally

stingofthebutterfly · 02/12/2021 09:28

If she enjoys them and can afford them, where's the harm? There'll be plenty of adults that don't have any advent calendars. The balance is there.

ThePoisonousMushroom · 02/12/2021 09:28

At 9.00am?

Well, no. But I assume that those judging it at 9am won’t have had a big change of heart by 8pm, and will still be judging 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Hummingbirdcake · 02/12/2021 09:28

I don’t like things like beauty boxes and beauty advent calendars because I’ve got very sensitive skin and because some of the products might be tested on animals. But I suppose if people like them then that’s up to them.

fejkalove · 02/12/2021 09:29

Just come on here to say please stop being such a Scrooge. If you want to judge others, do it quietly not on a public forum. Just because it's not your thing....Whatever happened to #bekind

Mulhollandmagoo · 02/12/2021 09:29

@Bigassbeebuzzbuzz

I wondered this yesterday when everyone posted their families advent calendars on Facebook. My dc must feel hard done by because they only got 1 £2 chocolate advent calendar each. Some dc had 5 advent calendars! Personally I wouldn't have one (maybe a chocolate one) but if that's what people want to buy it's got nothing to do with me.
I must admit, this blew my mind a little, I saw quite a few kids who had 3/4/5 advent calendars! I got my daughter just a dairy milk one and she's happy enough with that. As you say though, each to their own with that sort of thing.
Hellolittlestar · 02/12/2021 09:29

I’m with you op, but I also think gift wrapped toiletries in general is a waste of money. I’m very specific about what I chose and hate cluttered bathroom. Pretty beauty sets is my Christmas nightmare Grin

Kokeshi123 · 02/12/2021 09:31

I would be really surprised if every single item just happened to be something that the person was definitely going to buy anyway.

I suspect half the items will be unused or used once and will end up in landfill.

Things traditionally for women - beauty, bags, nails etc are all ridiculed as unnecessary and flippant and a waste. It is misogyny.

I actually see more threads on here complaining about men and their stupid wasteful hobbies, than about women and their beauty products!

See....a Gin one I could get behind Grin A wine would do too!
Marmite27 · 02/12/2021 09:32

@knittingaddict

I can't bring myself to conden them despite having no interest in one myself. However a hand dyed yarn advent is a whole other story and I would love one. I mean really really love one. Maybe soon. 🧶
Jodyri designs do a hand dyed thread (for cross stitch etc) advent so a hand dyed yarn one isn’t outside the realms of possibility Wink
SexyNeckbeard · 02/12/2021 09:32

@toconclude begrudging someone else a little bit of daily joy because you have bad skin is very odd. You know you can get all sorts, from socks, to whisky, chocolate etc - it's not all face creams you know.

Like someone else said maybe focus on making yourself happier so you don't feel the need to judge others for what makes them happy.

DrSbaitso · 02/12/2021 09:34

Ah, tell them you started at 9am. By 8pm they'll be desperate for something new to have a moralistic flap over, they'll be delighted to have more fodder. It'll be the perfect Christmas gift for them, no waste or capitalism. Tell them you gave it to your four year old as well. Tell them you bathe in the stuff when you're out of ass's milk.
SusannaQueen · 02/12/2021 09:35

My Mum bought me a tea one, it's a brand of tea that I already buy and it's a nice way of getting to sample different ones. Yes, it's a marketing ploy, but it works for me too, as I don't have to buy a box of each flavour. There's no extra plastic, as the calendar is a piece of card.

ThePoisonousMushroom · 02/12/2021 09:35

I did actually debate replying ‘yeah why not? It’s Christmas after all Gin’, but I thought MN might implode with self righteousness.
I wonder what gin is like in coffee?

They're more about men doing their hobbies for far longer than women get to do anything fun. As you know.
