Cleaning the toilet

dirtyloo · 01/12/2021 18:20

Aibu to wonder how everyone cleans their toilet. I don't want a brush/no brush argument I get how you clean the bowl and the seat you sit on and the bit underneath but how do you clean all the nooks and crannies around the lid/hinges, mine is all grubby and dusty but I don't know how to clean it properly..

OP posts:

I use an old toothbrush.

Justmuddlingalong · 01/12/2021 18:25

Take the whole seat off every few months and clean all the gubbins.

CloudyStorms · 01/12/2021 18:39

Get a cloth or a kitchen sponge and clean it

ChimChimeny · 01/12/2021 18:44

I use disposable anti bac wipes on the seat, cistern, porcelain bit. before doing that I squirt toilet gel around the bowl and then scrub with a brush.

ChimChimeny · 01/12/2021 18:45

Bleach round the bsl l every month or so

ChimChimeny · 01/12/2021 18:45

Bowl!

royco · 01/12/2021 18:47

@slashlover

I use an old toothbrush.
Joke, surely?
LagneyandCasey · 01/12/2021 19:02

Spray with anti bac spray daily, getting into the nooks and crannies and leave as long as possible before wiping clean with loo roll. Toilet cleaner under the rim a couple of times a week. Our seats seem to move a lot so they come off at least once a month to be cleaned and adjusted.

Cheerbear24 · 01/12/2021 19:04

Put a glove on and use disinfectant on a big wad of toilet roll every couple of days, and bleach over night.

Crepuscularshadows · 01/12/2021 19:09

For the awkward nooks and crannies I thread a cloth soaked in bleach between the bits and sort of "floss" it to get it all nice and clean.

Twillow · 01/12/2021 19:12

Get some rubber gloves on and work out how to take off the seat. It's the only way to get it properly clean - obviously only a now and again job but makes in between so much easier. Modern seats have easy release hinges but it's not impossible to remove older style ones. If the hinges are rusty and horrid get a new seat!

Twillow · 01/12/2021 19:13

I have a cleaning toothbrush! It's just any old one but with a bit of masking tape wrapped round the handle so no-one will use it for anything else!

Northernsoullover · 01/12/2021 19:13

I just use toilet roll and spray.

LalalalalalaLand123 · 01/12/2021 19:15

Spray and paper towel for most of it. Toilet cleaner and brush for the inside.

TheCanyon · 01/12/2021 19:16

I use an old toothbrush too and take the whole seat off every couple months and soak it in bleach.

thequeenoftarts · 01/12/2021 19:37

Baby wipes, I hate hate hate the job too

bigbluebus · 01/12/2021 19:41

We've got quick release seats. If they're gungy around the hinges I take the seat off and soak it in soapy water in the bath. Then I clean the bath.

EvilPea · 01/12/2021 19:43

Super hot soapy cloth that gets boil washed with the towels.

picklemewalnuts · 01/12/2021 19:43

Spray and toilet roll.

If there's nothing wrong with the loo seat, don't take it off- I did that once and it never refitted as well. It was loose from then on.

MakingTheBestOfIt · 01/12/2021 19:44

We also have a quick release seat on the ‘main’ loo and it makes the job so much easier.

‘Flossing’ with a cloth is used on the others.

Whenever we’ve had a cleaner they’ve always used old toothbrushes!

slashlover · 01/12/2021 19:45

Joke, surely?

@royco Why would it be a joke when OP specifically asks how to clean all the nooks and crannies around the lid/hinges?

CaribouCarafe · 01/12/2021 19:48

Spray and toilet roll for me too on the outer parts of the toilet... I hate using sponges.

I've lived in plenty of rentals that questionably clean toilets when I first moved in but was always able to get them looking nice again.

One easy way I've found to clean off stubborn grime is leaving neat Clorox on for a good half hour or so. It tends to seep into nooks and crannies and doesn't require any elbow grease.

NetballHoop · 01/12/2021 19:49

I used to work with someone who cleaned hers in the dishwasher. It's probably OK, but I'm not going to try it any time soon.

statetrooperstacey · 01/12/2021 19:49

Blast it with a steamer , I was horrified by what came out from under the hinges !! My new bathroom has a quick release seat it’s brilliant.

Maireas · 01/12/2021 19:49

I don't want a brush/no brush argument Confused you'll be lucky!
