Red wine education

So... I'm mid 30s and all of my friends and family drink red wine. I've always stuck to white and am always the awkward one who can't share a bottle if we go it for dinner Grin

Last night, DH had a bottle of red open and insisted I might like it... apparently it's a 'mature' taste and now i'm a responsible mother of two he thought I may enjoy it. I took a sip and OH MY GOD I AM CONVERTED.

So... this one was called 19 crimes. I have absolutely idea if they all taste similar or are wildly different but I want to find out Grin

Are there other red wines that are similar to this one (but maybe less that £10 a bottle Confused) or is there a better type out there?

Help me MNettersWine

I've never tried any of the 19 crimes wine. Mainly because the labels are terrifying. Those guys give me the creeps. Sounds like they might be too sweet for me anyway

Fomofo · 01/12/2021 19:38

I love a really smooth mellow full bodied red wine, if any one has any recommendations!

theshadeofgreen · 01/12/2021 19:40

@MrsBirkett my DH says the lady in the supermarket reckons you can scan the bottle on your phone and it brings the man to life... plays a video about his crime, or something Grin

This lady has some amazing courses and freebies you could try - www.winedinecaroline.com/wine-courses/

(I'm not her, btw! I just follow her on Instagram and she's really good fun.)

I love a Greek Red you can get at tesco, I can't remember what it's called but it's really sweet and you chill it! Until this week it was the only red I'd drink but I did just buy the yellow tail Jammy red roo one hoping it would be similar so I'm so glad someone already recommended it cos it sounds I've I'll like it

DontWiltMySpinachPlease · 01/12/2021 20:09

Diablo is a firm favorite here. Absolutely gorgeous!

theshadeofgreen · 01/12/2021 20:39

Buy yourself some decent glasses, never put more than a centimetre or two in the glass, just refill as required. This allows the fullness of the wine to be appreciated.

A good swirl helps aerate the wine and soften the flavours.

winewolfhowls · 01/12/2021 21:29

Jam shed is a cheap and drinkable red, i also love 19 crimes,

Did you know you can make the labels come to life and tell you all about their crimes (scan with phone)

winewolfhowls · 01/12/2021 21:30

Sorry just seen you know that

MrsBirkett · 02/12/2021 08:54

@theshadeofgreen That will give me nightmares!

MazzleDazzle · 07/12/2021 09:10

never put more than a centimetre or two in the glass

At the rate I throw it down my neck that would never work! Grin

Eylis · 07/12/2021 09:30

You'd probably like yellow tail jammy red roo if you're into sweet reds

Play8063 · 07/12/2021 13:25

Chianti. You won't look back!

NightmareSlashDelightful · 07/12/2021 13:29

Californian pinot noir is quite often on the sweeter end, although not in a synthetic way.

You would need to spend more than £10 for a good bottle though.

Zero123 · 07/12/2021 13:36

I only recently started drinking red wine and love this one. It look and tastes the exact same as the barefoot cab sav but half the price!

Bibbiano Chianti Classico from the Co op is £11 but it is fab.

CounsellorTroi · 07/12/2021 14:12

Also Beaujolais is quite nice and light for a red, you can chill it if you like, I don’t though.

theshadeofgreen · 08/12/2021 19:48

Ooooh @Zero123 I was wondering about Alid's reds.

Their whites are great!

@theshadeofgreen aldi do a French Malbec-Syrah that is very juicy and moreish, it’s my go-to red when I don’t know what else to get

DeepaBeesKit · 08/12/2021 20:13

Don't limit yourself to wine under £10 for the excellent reasons on this thread. Drink less & better.

I like amarone della valpolicella. It tastes like christmas Blush.

deenar · 08/12/2021 21:35

£30 lighter now thanks to this thread on a 19 Crimes "Cali / Snoop Dogg" red but it'll be an epic Christmas gift!

theshadeofgreen · 09/12/2021 08:43

@DeepaBeesKit drink less and better sounds great in theory. Grin

I like Yellow tail but hate jammy. Australian and Chilean wine are good, and South Africans. Lindemans, Wolf Blass and McGuigan are also labels I buy over and over. Shiraz, Cabernet or Malbec. I used to drink merlot a lot but have gone off it.
My family doesn't drink but all my friends prefer white so I either go along with that or only order red by the glass.

CounsellorTroi · 09/12/2021 09:12

We love Chilean and Argentinian Malbecs.
