A carrot

A potato

An egg

Carrots and potatoes don't have dates on them so thats irrelevant

An egg I'd do the water drop test.

Chikapu · 01/12/2021 17:12

If the carrot and potato are still firm and not spongy then they're fine to eat. Common sense goes a long way with vegetables. I don't eat eggs so I can't answer that one.

RoseAndRose · 01/12/2021 17:13

No need for dates on carrots and potatoes

Eggs - probabkyna couoke of weeks after the date on the box

PiesNotGuys · 01/12/2021 17:13

Any length of time out of date, months, years, but I wouldn’t eat them if they were rancid.

Potatoes and carrots keep indefinitely if stored well especially unwashed. Eyes or bruises can be shaved off. Carrots going bendy can be used for stock, soups and gravy.

Eggs, if they’re bad, you’ll know before you get to the eating stage.

MintJulia · 01/12/2021 17:13

Vegetables go squishy when they go off. If they are still hard, they are still good to eat. I buy 100lb sacks of potatoes in autumn and they keep for months in the garage.

Eggs are easy. Eggs that are off stink of ammonia and make your eyes water.

FatCatThinCat · 01/12/2021 17:16

I once cracked an egg that was off. It was like a scene from Amityville Horror. With seconds the entire downstairs was full of huge mutant flies. God knows where they came from but they were everywhere. So I doubt you'd ever be able to eat a bad egg. When they off, they're off.

PurpleDaisies · 01/12/2021 17:16

I don’t think I’ve ever checked a date on those things.

SnackSizeRaisin · 01/12/2021 17:18

The dates are irrelevant for all of those. For old eggs I would cook them thoroughly e.g. in a cake, or hard boiled.
The water drop test doesn't tell you it's ok to eat, it gives an idea of freshness that's all. Off eggs are obvious.

dementedpixie · 01/12/2021 17:18

I dont look at dates on veg. You could check eggs by seeing if they float in water (bad) or sink (good)

CSJobseeker · 01/12/2021 17:18

The concept of an 'out of date potato' or an 'out of date carrot' is utterly alien to me!

AndMatt · 01/12/2021 17:19

None of those need dates.

The veg of it hasn't started to rot it's fine, even if it has just cut off the bad bits .

Egg, you'll know as soon as you crack it if it's not fit to eat. They're fine for ages after their dates. I had two one month out of date eggs for lunch today actually.

SnackSizeRaisin · 01/12/2021 17:19

Have eaten eggs a year out of date. Potatoes and carrots probably wouldn't last that long

SnackSizeRaisin · 01/12/2021 17:20

You could check eggs by seeing if they float in water (bad) or sink (good)

Not true. Floating eggs are still fine, just less fresh

TheCanyon · 01/12/2021 17:22

Carrots and potatoes if they looked ok I'd eat them. An egg, chuck them the day after the date.

I don't eat out of date food usually. Though there was a box of battenburg in the cupboard earlier with nov 4th on them, I presume this year? Full of sugar so figured they would be ok, they were a bit dry but bloody tasty.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/12/2021 17:27

Apples and carrots as long as they looked reasonably ok

Eggs I’d also do the water drop test

CSJobseeker · 01/12/2021 17:32

An egg, chuck them the day after the date.

Why? Genuine question.

Wizzbangfizz · 01/12/2021 17:48

I'd eat pretty much anything of it didn't smell or look bad. I don't pay much heed to best before.

peboh · 01/12/2021 17:52

I can't I ever really pay attention to the dates on carrots and potatoes, I just judge them by how they look and feel, but they're usually gone within less than a week in our household anyway.
Eggs if there's still any left after the bb, then I'll just do the water test. Usually they're good for several weeks after.

MrsPnut · 01/12/2021 17:57

Eggs are fine, the older they are the more likely they are to be used for Yorkshires or a cake. Fresher eggs for fried and poached eggs. I've smelt an egg that was off and we had to air the house for hours and I think it wasn't even out of date either.

Carrots and Potatoes are fine so long as they aren't mouldy, even one carrot in the bag being slimy and the others are ok then I would rinse them and peel them.

I hate wasting food, so tonight we have a side salad dated yesterday that has one or two browning pieces of lettuce in so I shall pick those out and eat it anyway.

frumpety · 01/12/2021 18:05

Potatoes, I never look at the date , same with carrots.

Eggs I keep in the fridge so probably a couple of weeks past the date.

InTheLabyrinth · 01/12/2021 18:18

I'd never look at the dates on any of those.
As above, off eggs are very obvious once cracked - and we rarely boil eggs.

thelegohooverer · 01/12/2021 18:27

I’m very easily put off my food. The thought of it being out of date makes my throat feel tight. Logically I know it’s absurd but it definitely affects me. I’ve started decanting fruit and veg, so that I’m not looking at dates but looking at food instead. But with eggs I’d still go by the date. Mind you I got a bad one once that was still “in date” so even that’s not foolproof.

Tereseta · 01/12/2021 18:30

I ate eggs today from end of October, passed the water test. Veg is just a visual check and even then they will probably get chucked in a stew!

raviolo · 01/12/2021 18:40

Eggs come from our chickens so no date- the date is bbe anyway not use by. I can't believe people would bin them

DeepaBeesKit · 01/12/2021 19:38

I ate an egg 8 days over about a week ago. I put it in a jug of water, it didn't float, I ate it.

Apples and carrots, god, yonks. I don't look at the date, just if a carrot has gone very soft/black etc or if an apple has gone too mushy. Obviously anything mouldy I don't eat.
