I eat loads of things past the date but never eggs I really didn’t know you could. Must be the Edwina Curry effect 🙄

Thehermitspermit · 01/12/2021 19:51

A carrot

Doesn't have dates - pull it from the ground, store it, last a couple of months and are edible until they start to rot

A potato
Same - pull them from the ground, store in bags in shed, normally only just turning bad by the time next years are coming out the ground

So whenever - as long as they are not green or mushy
An egg

Again don't check dates - doesn't float completely? Eat it

Mamadothehump · 01/12/2021 21:09

No idea! Don't look at dates on any of those! Eggs I'd be the most conscious of but they don't last long in our house!

nowhheeeyyy · 01/12/2021 21:11

This is good to know. The carrots and potatoes I but in packs with a date on but wasn't sure whether I should really take notice of them.

Eggs I asked as I don't mind out of date eggs but wasn't sure if I was the only one. Clearly not!

The egg hmmm maybe a 4/5 days maybe more if I was desperate. Veg I eats weeks past so long as it hasn't gone bad.

DdraigGoch · 01/12/2021 23:42

I hardly buy anything with a date printed (almost everything is bought loose). Somehow I seem to avoid poisoning myself and waste hardly anything - I had to compost a mouldy end slice of bread today, that's very unusual.

amsadandconfused · 01/12/2021 23:47

My mum gave my children egg mayonnaise sandwich about 20 years ago …eggs out of date by six weeks….they are all fine functioning adults !

This thread's reminded me of a 5 minutes craft I saw the other day. According to them, burying bendy carrots into a box full of mud revives them. Seems a lot of trouble though.

A bowl of water does the same thing
Sosigsandwich · 02/12/2021 12:19

I'm another one who just probs veg. And do the egg test as well. Tbh I'm very lax with dates apart from fish.

Chocaholic9 · 02/12/2021 12:35

When we were in lockdown I ate eggs that were 3 months out of date. They weren't as pleasant to eat as fresh eggs but they were perfectly fine. There was only one that went rotten.

Chely · 02/12/2021 12:37

I judge based on how they feel, they can last weeks past the display until date.
Eggs I do the water test and they can be fine for about 5/6 weeks from purchase, we get ours from farm shop so no dates on them.

NovemberNovemberDarkNights · 02/12/2021 12:41

@raviolo

Eggs come from our chickens so no date- the date is bbe anyway not use by. I can't believe people would bin them
How inconsiderate if your hens not to date their eggs on the 'way out'. Have a word!!
ponkydonkey · 02/12/2021 12:42

Do give old eggs to the dog, my son did as I said 1 is great for their coat....
Once they've been processed by the dog the smell is worse than a rotten egg or several million rotten eggs 🤣

KeyLimeFly · 02/12/2021 12:46

Potatoes and carrots keep for months after the BBE on the bag! As long as they haven’t become liquid, they’re all good. Even a bit soft they are alright in mash, stews, soups etc.

Eggs we get from our chickens usually. I’d use them unless they smelt bad.

DockOTheBay · 02/12/2021 12:52

Potatoes and carrots i wouldn't even think to check. If they're not wrinkly and sprouting, they're good to go.

Eggs I would float them in water. If they were more than two weeks or so I might just chuck them anyway but they rarely last that long.

dangerrabbit · 02/12/2021 12:57

Veg is ok to eat at any date unless it's going mouldy. Eggs, dairy and meat I adhere to the use by dates just in case.

Pazuzu · 02/12/2021 13:13

If it attacks me when I open the fridge or is furry and growling, it's probably gone off.

If it looks ok, it probably is. Especially if the fridge is a decent one.

BarbaraofSeville · 02/12/2021 13:57

A bowl of water does the same thing

That's a great tip, that I got from here a few months back. I mentioned I was fed up of making soup that I didn't really want to make use of a couple of slightly bendy carrots and someone posted that tip. I now put carrots in a plastic tub in water in the fridge and it revives them in a day or two.

Please don't tell me that anyone takes any notice of dates on fruit and veg?

Cantbebotheredwithausername · 02/12/2021 15:08

With vegetables I never look at the dates. If they still seem fresh, I'll eat them. I usually throw eegs out if they exceed the date, but that never happens. I eat too many of them.

pigsDOfly · 02/12/2021 15:21

I've never noticed dates on carrots or potatoes, which I usually buy loose anyway.

Eggs, if they're very out of date I'll do the float test otherwise if it's just a few day I'll use them without testing.

muddyford · 02/12/2021 15:31

Loose veg don't have dates. I use my common sense. I used to use eggs way past their date but came a cropper. Now wouldn't use them more than five days or a week over.
