AIBU about calling 111

TotallySuper · 27/11/2021 14:24

My daughter is 4 and has had a sustained temp (with calpol) of between 38.8 and 39.9 since this morning. She also has a stiff neck and back and very tired but no other symptoms. Everything is telling me to call 111 as calpol isn't touching it but not sure if I'm over reacting? If you've called 111 recently anyone know what the wait times look like? Thanks

How is she in herself? Is she lethargic or is she up and playing?

TotallySuper · 27/11/2021 14:54

Shes lethargic just wants to lay down. Got through, we will get an out of hours GP call back within 6 hours.

I'm glad you got through, you did the right thing. If she changes or they take longer than 6 hours, you'd not be unreasonable to call 999 or go to A&E.

Hope she's okay- keep her fluids up and make sure she rests

TotallySuper · 27/11/2021 14:59

Thank you she is drinking gallons of water luckily as she often does so thats good.

high temperature, stiff neck, fatigue one of the classic signs of viral infection. not only covid

beebopado · 27/11/2021 15:28

It's such a worry isn't it ! TBH if it was me I would take her to ED as her temp is very high given you are giving her calpol and she has a stiff neck. If you phone 999 they would not send an ambulance if you are able to drive her there. However, it goes without saying that if she becomes more unwell then do not hesitate.

YukoandHiro · 27/11/2021 15:30

High temp that won't come down + stiff neck would be straight to a&e for me. Don't take the risk. Doctors won't say you're wasting their time.

I recently went to a&e on day 5 of temp worrying I was over reacting and time wasting - my baby had a severe UTI and was admitted for five days.

If your instincts say it needs checking, get it checked xxxx

MalbecandToast · 27/11/2021 15:31

Glad you got through OK, let's hope you aren't waiting long for the GP to call back and she feels much better soon

Fallagain · 27/11/2021 15:33

High temp, stiff neck and lethargic - take her to A and E. I wouldn’t sit at home for 6 hours.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 27/11/2021 16:02

111 is a total waste of time IMO. Useless.

Just take her to a and e these are all v concerning symptoms I wouldn’t fuck around with. Walk in centre would be fine too - guarantee 111 will tell you to go in anyway.

elliejjtiny · 27/11/2021 16:17

I would keep encouraging her to drink plenty and don't hesitate to phone 111 again if she gets any worse.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 27/11/2021 16:49

I would take my child to a&e with a temp and a stuff neck, wouldn’t think twice.

BrainPotter · 27/11/2021 16:58

Glad you called 111, absolutely the right thing to do x

whataballbag · 27/11/2021 19:37

How is she OP?

TotallySuper · 27/11/2021 22:52

Saw out of hours GP and she has a UTI and on antibiotics. Can't fault 111 - we were contacted, seen and at home with antibiotics within 4 hours.

Stiff neck and temp she needs seeing ASAP. 999 or if quicker go straight to A&E with her.

I hope she is OK.

TheRealMrsMorningstar · 28/11/2021 06:38

Sorry didn't read the updates 🤦🏼‍♀️

Glad she has been seen, hope she is feeling better soon Flowers

Really? Not in this instance, and the 111 service have helped me too.
SpamIAm · 28/11/2021 08:26

Glad she's sorted OP :)

Just wanted to mention that the negative link between ibuprofen and Covid was disproven well over a year ago now. It's absolutely fine to take ibuprofen with Covid.

Justheretoaskaquestion91 · 28/11/2021 08:28

@Seymour5

Pleased for you and OP they have helped. I’ve used them several times and found them to be absolutely useless! I’m delighted OP got antibiotics as a UTI for a child can be so serious

TotallySuper · 28/11/2021 20:17

Well the nitrofurantoin they prescribed temporarily made her feel better in terms of the UTI but then this evening has made her incredibly sick. I've stopped it and will speak to the GP in the morning. Feel so bad something that's supposed to help her has made her ill.

FellaItzgerald · 28/11/2021 21:49

I'm glad it wasn't the worst news OP. x

TotallySuper · 28/11/2021 22:53

Thank you I hope they can give her some other medicine though. Fingers crossed for tomorrow thanks.
