To book a skip?

We have a load of stuff to go to the tip. Old (I mean, DESTROYED), dining chairs, parts of an old food processor which broke, another broken blender, loads of textiles that can't really be donated (battered clothing with stains and holes in it and worn to death reusable nappies etc).... the list goes on.

Dh has a big car which I'm not insured to drive. My car is too small to take this stuff to the tip. Dh is not bothering his arse to take it (in fairness, he works, as do I and we have small children and no help, so when we aren't working, we are looking after tiny ones). Anyway, the stuff has been here for months now and dh hasn't made a move to take it away.

He was appaled when I suggested I will hire a skip then, as he finds it too extravagant (we are not broke. This is not a money issue).

WIBU to book one anyway?

Yes, 100%. I hate it when 'stuff' stays around for ages. If you're happy to load it yourself, do it.

DontGetYourKnickersInATwist · 26/11/2021 11:46

I weight train and love it. I was bloody born to loft heavy things Wink. Totally fine to load it myself.

It's a good idea, but they are expensive and when we had once we ended up with people thinking they could have a look through it without asking us first! I wouldn't have minded if he had knocked and asked us if he could take something.
Sometimes the companies can also take a while to pick them up too even after calling them a few times.
It is easier than trips to the dump though.

tanstaafl · 26/11/2021 11:48

Just do it!

If you have to have it on the street you may need a license from the council.

Guardsman18 · 26/11/2021 11:49

Have you looked into HIPPO bags? They come in different sizes. They arrive flat.

I used to have days where I could throw things in there and then forget about it and then go back to it when I wanted. It probably isn't quite the Christmas look you'd want though!

When you have filled it, contact them and they collect. Great service.

Mischance · 26/11/2021 11:50

Do it - choose a good company that recycles.

Leeds2 · 26/11/2021 11:50

I would tell him that you will be hiring a skip in, say, two weeks time if the stuff hasn’t been taken to the tip in that time. So give him a final chance to sort it.

Incidentally, the clothes with holes and beyond repair can still be taken to the charity shop. Just put them in a bag marked as rags, and the shop sells them to a dealer.

DontGetYourKnickersInATwist · 26/11/2021 11:51

Emboldened by this thread, I've just gone to his home office (aka our bedroom) and said we need to go to the tip....or, shall I book a skip?

He is booking the tip 😂

Love ordering skips. Just do it but don’t go for the smallest one. Got for a medium one and completely declutter.

IncompleteSenten · 26/11/2021 11:52

Id say to him I'm sick of this rubbish.
You don't want to hire a skip, fine. Take the rubbish to the dump.
If it's still here on X date, I'm booking a skip. So whether we get a skip or not is entirely in your control.

Sausagis · 26/11/2021 11:54

Load it into his car and then it's his problem Grin

We do this! Never realised it was an issue. It's in a skip so being thrown away, it's much better to be reused or upcycled than just going to a landfill.

Why on earth would you care if someone wants to take and make use of something you didn’t want any more? Confused

Well you could say that about bins as well but (judging by the current thread on AIBU) most people are understandably pretty pissed off with strangers rummaging through their bins.

Unfortunately nowadays you also need to book a trip to the tip!!
Accidentgirlfriend · 26/11/2021 12:01

Surely you don’t need permission from people in the internet , get the skip booked :) it’s good for the mental health ! Start the new year as you mean to go on and get rid of the clutter ….
I need to book a skip myself but we have nowhere to put one :(

Ha! Sorry. He is going to the TIP. He has to book it in advance as our local tip is still only doing by appointment ATM.

I looked out of the window to discover a young man having a look through our things in the skip
Dh was around and just said ' why didn't you knock first ?' He just laughed!
He took a few things , but I thought it would have been nice for him to check with us.
I know we were throwing it out , but it wouldn't occur to me to do this to someone's else things on their drive.
Maybe I'm too polite ?? 😂

slajayhresfurshihfraaff · 26/11/2021 12:12

@the80sweregreat at least he wasn't putting stuff in it.

slajayhresfurshihfraaff · 26/11/2021 12:13

OP this can be a good alternative to a skip, especially if you don't have too much stuff to take.

TotallySuper · 26/11/2021 12:13

Next time OP would have been cheaper to book a days temporary insurance for his car and take it to the tip than hire a skip.

So True !!
I know it's irrational , but it wound me up at that time. I see my small driveway as my terrority I suppose !! I'm over it now !!

Brainwave89 · 26/11/2021 12:18

Had one recently to clear my Dad's house out. Great things. Check though what can go in it. I was a bit surprised that there was a long list of things that could not go to the tip in a skip.
