To book a skip?

We have a load of stuff to go to the tip. Old (I mean, DESTROYED), dining chairs, parts of an old food processor which broke, another broken blender, loads of textiles that can't really be donated (battered clothing with stains and holes in it and worn to death reusable nappies etc).... the list goes on.

Dh has a big car which I'm not insured to drive. My car is too small to take this stuff to the tip. Dh is not bothering his arse to take it (in fairness, he works, as do I and we have small children and no help, so when we aren't working, we are looking after tiny ones). Anyway, the stuff has been here for months now and dh hasn't made a move to take it away.

He was appaled when I suggested I will hire a skip then, as he finds it too extravagant (we are not broke. This is not a money issue).

WIBU to book one anyway?

So stuff going to landfill is preferable over someone else reusing or upcycling an object you have no need for?

I don't think it's rude, I'd be glad that someone could find a use for something I no longer had a need for.

the80sweregreat · 26/11/2021 12:25

I was just spooked to see someone I didn't know on the drive at that time I guess
I take the point that he wanted dh's very old tools or whatever it was he took , to use , but it was just the point he didn't ask us first.
I'm sorry that this doesn't sit well with mumsnetters view of my old skip!! Lol

@TotallySuper

Next time OP would have been cheaper to book a days temporary insurance for his car and take it to the tip than hire a skip.
I think he'd hate this more than the skip! He loves his car.

You do need to check what you can put in it too
There are regulations.

Shade17 · 26/11/2021 12:27

Why on earth aren’t you insured to drive his car?

HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 26/11/2021 12:29

Before booking a skip check your council website to see if they do bulky collections.

Ours do 1 collection every 2 months free of charge, then £5 per collection on top of that.

Each collection can be up to 5 large items or 5 bin bags of stuff or 15 bags of garden waste.

JonSnowedUnder · 26/11/2021 12:30

As @Guardsman18 said check out HIPPO bags, haven't used them myself but I was doing some research about 2 years ago and it seemed like a better option than a skip. Also check out waste removal companies - you have to be careful they are properly licensed and not going to fly tip though. I booked one and just filled the garage over a week or so and asked them to clear out the lot.

billyt · 26/11/2021 12:38

There are many cheaper options than Hippo!

Our local waste company does the same size bags as Hippo but a lot lot cheaper.

Their 1 Tonne grab bag is £50 + VAT so £60 Total. they drop the bag off and then you just call when it's ready for collection.

The same size bag with hippo is £156 Shock

It's surprising what you can get in the bag.

Embracelife · 26/11/2021 12:40

Or a, " collect your junk" company who come with van

StrongLegs · 26/11/2021 12:49

That's great OP! Well done.

I chucked most of the contents of our bedroom in the front garden this week and the council took it away. Really very happy about that.

Fomofo · 26/11/2021 13:45

I'd get insured on your other car, and don't send stuff to land fill if you can help it

BarbaraofSeville · 26/11/2021 14:50

A lot of stuff in skips doesn't actually go to landfill any more, so that's not a worry. The skip companies sort through it, recycle what they can and the rest could well be incinerated in a waste to energy plant, the chances of it going to landfill is actually quite small.

Sounds like a result OP, it's up to him, he goes to the tip or you get a skip. That's the only two choices.

On the matter of insurance, it's often cheaper to insure 2 people on a car than one, it always has been for us, so check that out.

tanstaafl · 26/11/2021 15:12

It’s been a few hours now OP.

I’m going to guess DP still hasn’t actually booked the dump run?

Sowhatifiam · 26/11/2021 15:33

I had a massive clear out once and realised after the second trip to the dump that I was kidding myself. So I ordered a skip. Filled it. I am at the point where I think I will do it again. It is so easy to just gather 'stuff' that you really don't need or use. It's not particularly expensive, even more so when you consider the cost in terms of time and effort getting everything into and out of the car.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 26/11/2021 16:57

We did this and phoned a local private reduce collector and they sent us the recycling receipt so we could prove it hadn't been fly tipped. Cost about £200 but it all went at same time and no skip in drive

Cacee3029 · 26/11/2021 17:00

I could have written similar myself at times op. Dp made no attempt to take it to the tip but when I suggested a skip, he wouldn't have it. Anyway, I told him if he didn't take it, then I would either pay something to take it away with a van (always an option for you op) or a skip. He soon dealt with it. I couldn't do it myself, because I wanted him to do it in his work vehicle as it's never clean anyway, which I'm not insured on. I didn't want to put it in our family car.

These days j try and keep on top. Rather than letting a pile accumulate outside. I'll take something myself straight away! Not always as easy as that for bigger items though.

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 26/11/2021 20:44

Our council collects large items. As long as you have a driveway you can just leave it out for them and they collect it. They will tell you how much it's going to cost before they load it up. perhaps your council does something similar

Duchess379 · 26/11/2021 21:42

You can hire a 'grab bag' they're smaller than a skip & cheaper. We did this when we redid our back garden. Do it. You'll feel tons better when it's all gone
