New house .... neighbours flytipping

Hello

Looking for some advice please.

Just moved to a new house. We're first time buyers in a terraced street in a city suburb that's very "up and coming" (read: a bit rough in parts)

The neighbours opposite live next to an alley which they seem to use as their personal dumping ground. First it was 6 or 7 full bin liners that the council eventually took away and now multiple mattresses just thrown very openly over their garden wall into the alley.

AIBU to report them? I'm loathed to do it as it could make it things very difficult if they found out and I'm a big wimp when it comes to confrontation but it's right outside our window and we'd really like this to stop.

Does anyone have experience of this and are such reports anonymous?

Bloody hate fly tipping, it's so lazy, report them

Dougieowner · 25/11/2021 22:01

Yes, of course you report it.

Chloemol · 25/11/2021 22:14

Who owns the alley? Is it access to gardens in which case it might be theirs

If is access to say shops, another street etc then yes just report it. Normally it can be done on line and you don’t need to give contact details

SarahProblem · 26/11/2021 08:39

It's a public alley that connects two parallel streets.

I've checked the council website and it seems anonymous to report rubbish that needs to be cleaned but you have to make a statement to report someone.

Sometimes this is done as if they asked the council to collect or uplift, they would pay a collection fee. But if someone else phones and reports it, they won't get charged. Used to happen all the time where I used to live.

rrhuth · 26/11/2021 08:51

Just report 'flytipping' but don't say who. The council will remove it. They go through the bags to see if there is anything identifiable.

This is a normal problem in terraced areas, it needs sorting but try not to get too wound up about it.

When you say 'right outside our window' - do you mean immediately outside as in the bags are touching your property, or over the street? If the former then you can ask them directly to please put the rubbish elsewhere. If the latter, I would try not to get too annoyed as it is likely to keep happening until they move!

I live next to an alley and store things that need to go to the top there, then when there's enough, I dispose of it. My garden is too small to keep things in. No one has ever complained that I an flytipping! Maybe that's what your neighbours are doing

Doesn’t really sound like it from the OP though does it?
madisonbridges · 26/11/2021 09:16

I wouldn't just report them, I'd film and report them. Disgusting, lazy arses.

Of course if they kept shotguns or were the local drug dealers, I might just rethink that decision.

That's terrible, keep your own rubbish on your property. There must be a lot if it doesn't fit in your garden! People have a right to use public paths without climbing over your crap.

Seriously? That is totally out of order, keep your shit in your own garden
RedRobin100 · 26/11/2021 09:25

Is it maybe where the council designated spot for uplift is?

RedRobin100 · 26/11/2021 09:26

If not yes def report it it’s disgusting

SarahProblem · 26/11/2021 09:26

No they aren't storing things. Literally hoofing mattresses, old chairs etc. I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt that they've arranged a council collection but I doubt it. Their kids seemingly throw their random rubbish on the pile as they walk by too.

It's just so disheartening to be excited about our new place that we saved for a long time to have this issue. But I suppose it comes with the area we've chosen.

It's not on my property it's about 5 metres opposite over the road.

That is flytipping..
Yournamehere007 · 26/11/2021 09:30

This was an issue where I used to live. I used to sneak out and chuck them back over their yard walls.

SirChenjins · 26/11/2021 09:34

Definitely report them - you should be able to do this anonymously.

Pieminster - do you own the alley? If not then keep your crap on your own property until you can get to the tip. Do people really need to be told this stuff?

MuguetRose · 26/11/2021 09:34

In our area you can report stuff like this online to the council, but the reports people have made seem to pop up when I'm reading a local news article in an "In your area" section. They're anonymous though

So you fill a public alley with your junk? Do you think that’s ok?

Grim.
HopeHappy · 26/11/2021 09:36

Report the flytipping anonymously online then stick a bit of paper, covertly, on the reverse of one of the bits of rubbish saying whose house it belongs to! No need to leave a statement then in your own name then.

My neighbours do this, it's infuriating and lazy. We now have rats and cockroaches in our alley because they are living in an old mattress and eating people's junk. The council do their best but frankly they're overwhelmed and understaffed at the minute, and I don't see why I should pay for it.

Of course you’re flytipping. You can’t just store your junk on public property. That is disgusting antisocial behaviour.

Are you using a public right of way to store your rubbish?
