Thinking of booking a last min trip for Feb. We want islands that have some life - with our 10 year old son - but not overloaded with tourists.

Any recs? TIA

Ko Chang! It’s lovely & I think protected from too much tourism!

IsThisNameTaken · 23/11/2021 18:47

I was going to say Ko Chang as well ... but not sure if you'd be better with the weather on the Andaman coast in Feb?

Whataday21 · 23/11/2021 18:49

Still Phi Phi

Another vote for ko Chang!!!

So beautiful and also very little "Brit abroad" type behaviour (yes I'm a snob).

Very Easy to get to from Bangkok too.

Thanks guys, will check it out. Is it good for kids?

Koh Lanta would also be perfect.

TorySteller · 23/11/2021 19:41

Another saying Koh Lanta! Beautiful island, nice restaurants and beaches but not too crowded.

mmgirish · 23/11/2021 19:47

I lived on a Thai island for years. Most of them are touristy but there are different types of tourists of course. Koh Lipe is fantastic.

Actupfishy · 23/11/2021 21:50

Koh Chang 😍😍

SecretKeeper1 · 23/11/2021 21:55

Ko Samet was my favourite, near Ko Chang. Whitest sand I've ever seen, but quieter than the other islands.

Ko Lanta is also a good choice, I love all that side around Ao Nang. Don't bother with Phuket, it's my least favourite part of Thailand.

Thisisunpleasant · 23/11/2021 22:14

Thanks all! And are the waters on these preferred beaches the thai crystal clear turquoise style? X

Hi all - for those of you who love Koh Chang, where do you recommend staying? Nothing too fancy but close to the beach

OhWhyNot · 26/11/2021 17:22

Koh Chang, Lanta, Lipe or Phi Phi

Also loved Koh Tao but went 25 years ago I’m sure there were restrictions on how many could stay (so you only had a few days)

I agree Koh Sumet has the whitest sand I’ve ever seen they are so bright. But something about the island I don’t know what it was but I didn’t like it there I felt uncomfortable and it was a relief to leave

I read that Thailand very much want to change who they attract as backpackers wanting full moon parties have caused so many problems (I was one) abs they are making changes during this time before it’s easy to travel again

Actupfishy · 28/11/2021 19:07

I loved lonely beach in koh Chang!

awonderfuladventure · 28/11/2021 19:29

Loved Ko Pha Ngan, we were the opposite side to the fulll moon parties side. Really beautiful. We went in August so the sea wasn't great and the Box Jelly fish situation really put us off swimming in the sea. Wasn't as keen on Koh Samui, far too commercialised.

Glassyellowbottle · 28/11/2021 19:57

@awonderfuladventure - that's my fear. Not being able to be in the sea. I am desperate to be on a beach holiday where I can swim in warm sea.

I think we might leave going until Xmas 2022 when jelly fish etc and the weather makes it better for sea swimming

Suspiciousmind20 · 28/11/2021 20:23

Please consider the climate crisis. I know it’s not what anyone wants to hear, but not (or reducing) flying is one of the easiest ways to reduce your carbon footprint. We are in an absolute crisis. If we don’t change our ways things are going to get really bad for ALL.

A flight form the UK to Thailand will be similar (probably more) to a whole year’s emissions from driving a car. You don’t NEED a holiday but we do NEED to limit the impact of climate change in order to continue to grow food and maintain social stability.

You only need to do a little research to know the absolutely awful situation we are all in.

Please do your bit to protect yourself and others, now and in the future.

NdujaWannaDance · 28/11/2021 20:26

Ko Lanta is gorgeous.

Glassyellowbottle · 28/11/2021 20:36

@Suspiciousmind20 - clearly you feel the need to voice this but equally, you don't know anything about the regularity of my travelling/my concern over the environmental crisis/how we, as a family, offset any travel...do you get my drift?

Doesn’t make a difference. Fact remains. Climate crisis. Future looking bad. Need to cut emissions to avert the worst effects. All need to do our bit. Flying for holidays is easy to stop. Requires no effort. Just don’t do it. Easy peasy.

Offsetting isn’t the answer. It’s helps slightly but also can create vast monocultures that are damaging. Also, how many of the trees planted survive? We could plant more trees a la offsetting AND fly less - double the benefit.

I do feel the need to say it because it needs to be said. We can’t go on pretending like this isn’t a thing and we can’t just keep going as we were. It’s just how it is I’m afraid.

So I’ll keep saying it. You can choose to ignore me of course. It doesn’t make the facts change though. Sorry.

I bet you're a blast at parties, lol. If your hobby is saving the planet, then I say crack on. However, I would never dream of forcing my interests on you, perhaps you should consider the same. Personally, I can't wait to resume taking my three long hail holidays abroad.
Glassyellowbottle · 28/11/2021 21:39

@Suspiciousmind20 - I do understand. I do care enormously. i don't travel often. I haven't gone abroad in years. What else can I say?!

Good luck with doing that unvaccinated.

Newnews · 28/11/2021 22:18

Another vote for Koh Lipe. Also not sure if you’re set on Thailand specifically but I would also consider the north Malaysian islands, pulau readang is lovely but the perhentians are really amazing. Crystal clear waters. Also generally a lot cheaper than Thailand tourist areas.

SecretKeeper1 · 29/11/2021 00:41

I think from what you’ve said, the whole Lanta / Ao Nang / Krabi region is your best bet. An abundance of places and activities within easy travelling distance.

If I were you I’d look at a couple of nights in Bangkok (stay central, nice hotel) and then it’s a quick flight down to Krabi. You can easily do Lanta, Railay, Phi Phi from there, also loads of tiny islands you can visit by boat. I’ve been all over and loved almost all of it, but for a two week holiday that’s where I’d go back to.
